SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A grant from the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce is easing the pain of the pandemic and keeping businesses afloat.Captain Bill Wilkerson, the owner of Malihini Sportfishing, has fished since he was old enough to cast.Wilkerson said at the age of seven, he and his grandmother would walk to the bus stop and ride two hours to get to Venice Beach."We used to fish on Venice Pier sun up to sun down," he said smiling.He said his grandmother was trying to protect him, by taking him out of the L.A. neighborhood where they lived.Wilkerson said he had friends in elementary and middle school she knew were getting into trouble, "I went back 10, 15 years ago to see if I could locate some of those friends, and most of them were gone due to gangs and drugs and things like that."He said he would never forget the time she took him to Santa Monica to go fishing. It was an extra 45 minutes on the bus, but it was worth it, he said. While under the pier, he said he saw a boat pull up, let people off, take others on, and leave.He asked his grandmother what they were doing. She said, "do you want to go fishing on a boat?"She knew the captain and the next weekend he hosted Wilkerson. There was no going back to fishing on the pier after that trip.Wilkerson named the captains he worked for over the years and said he was thankful most for Raymond Sobeick, who he said taught him how to fish and opened him up to the opportunity to be a business owner. "My dad growing up told me that I would have to work 10 times harder than anybody else, just because of the color of my skin," he said pausing. "It's true."He said it was only true at the beginning of launching his business.After Wilkerson worked hard, bought the Malihini in 2006, and launched his business, he says from there it wasn't smooth sailing."In 2011, I was diagnosed with cancer, a brain tumor... In 2017, the boat struck a whale."The accident creating a mountain of debt."We started 2020 strong and then COVID-19 happened," he said.Wilkerson said they applied for every grant and loan available and didn't get anything. Then, he heard about the Black Business Relief Grant Fund through ABC 10News. He was awarded a ,000 grant and supported with tools and mentors who guided him on pivoting his business plan."They really want to see Black and minority and Asian businesses succeed ... To me, it's been invaluable. I mean, to see that there are doors that can be opened for a guy who owns a fishing boat who can't get financing because of whatever," he chuckled.Wilkerson said the grant paid for fuel and parts. He said they're hoping to get a loan to carry them through the next few months. He added that his faith has gotten him through many challenges."He's never let us starve, he's always made sure we have food, we had water. Our bills, for the most part, were paid," he said choked up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A popular Thai restaurant in the College Area has been broken into for the second time in three weeks.At Sala Thai, there are sizzling entrees and simmering frustrations. "Saw the mess on the floor and thought what's going on?" said owner Chira Svangvitaya.A look at the surveillance video gave Svangvitaya the answer. Just before 5:30 Monday morning, a man in a hoodie is seen creeping into through the back door. He heads right to the cash register but finds it empty.He grabs some paperwork, empties the change dish and moments later, he leaves. It isn't for long. "He walked in and out three times, like he's not afraid of anything," said Svangvitaya.Two more trips nets him armfuls of stuff, including a computer, iPad, iPod, checkbooks and a case of soda. Near the end, he takes off his hood - and Svangvitaya's heart sank."I feel so sad and annoying. I don't know what I did to him," said Svangvitaya.The intruder is a stranger to her, but appears to be the same man who broke into the restaurant early Halloween morning. On that occasion, he used a crowbar to mangle the lock and damaged the register while grabbing 0 in cash. He also nabbed five tablets and a computer, crippling her online delivery business.Svangvitaya spent 0 to add a deadbolt after the Halloween break-in. This time, the intruder destroyed the repaired lock and the new deadbolt and went right on in. On the menu now are more costly repairs and a serving of nerves.    "I'm scared he will come back," said Svangvitaya. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former gang member who turned his life around in stunning fashion just got accepted to four different universities, including UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. 10News first met Apollo in 2010, as he and several others went to court to get off a gang injunction list for an Oceanside street gang.  An injunction prevents gang members from doing activities in certain areas, like associating with each other.  At that time, Apollo told us he had been out of the gang for several years after four years inside as a teenager."What hurt the most is hurting my mother... You want to amount to something, so (when i decided to get out) I'm trying to do this for her," said Apollo.Apollo was removed from the list about a year later, which is a rare feat. Among the requirements: written explanations, background checks, and approval from prosecutors and a judge.Since then, he has gone on to Palomar College, earned awards at speech and debate competitions, and at the age of 30, he just got accepted to four schools, including UC Berkeley and UCSD.  He's leaning towards Berkeley, though he isn't sure he can pay for it.  He's hoping to have a career in communications or social welfare so that he can help his community."Sometimes I can't believe it and sometimes I feel I should be doing more.  You want to leave something for them to look at, to hopefully inspire them to do more and succeed," said Apollo. 1473

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The wife of an active-duty Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton is due in court Thursday on charges of sexually abusing a 15-year-old foreign exchange student who was living with her family on the base.Nicole Marie Wilson, 22, is accused of engaging in sex acts with the unidentified teen on Sept. 20 against his wishes, according to court documents.A detention hearing is scheduled Thursday morning for Wilson, who pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a single count of sexual abuse of a minor in San Diego federal court.Court documents allege Wilson sat next to the boy on the living room couch and asked him to promise that he wouldn't tell her husband, no matter "whatever happens tonight."After their initial encounter made him uncomfortable, the boy told investigators he went to sleep and awoke to Wilson touching him, then performing oral sex on him. She asked him twice whether she should continue, and one time he said, "No," yet she continued anyway, then later had sexual intercourse with him, according to the criminal complaint.She later "apologized" to him "and acknowledged" that it was not consensual, the documents allege.Wilson allegedly told Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigators she had been drinking on Sept. 20 and "blacked out" while watching television with the boy, but denied anything sexual occurred. But a search of her cell phone revealed WhatsApp messages between herself and the teen that confirmed the sexual encounter, court documents allege.It was not clear how long the teen had been living with the family, nor what country he traveled from as part of the foreign exchange program. 1648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  It was a normal Thursday night for Rob Perelman. His Uber app was on and he was picking up passengers in San Diego. Then suddenly, things changed and his passengers got violent. You may have seen the video by now - a car crashing in Banker's Hill after the passengers began violently beating the driver.RELATED: Uber driver attacked by drunk passengersFriday, Perelman spoke for the first time about his early-morning attack. He told 10News what happened Friday morning isn't an Uber problem - they were just bad apples. "I've done 4,999 rides with good people," Perelman said. "And one with a bad person."Perelman gave that bad ride sometime after 1:00 a.m. Friday. He picked up the passengers in Banker's Hill and almost immediately realized they were drunk. "My gut feeling said to drive away," he said. "But I'm here to give people rides home, and I said you know what, 'we've all been the drunk guy just trying to get home from the bar, let me give these guys a ride home.'"MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHe only made it two blocks. "The guy in the back seat starts puking out the window...and if he can't make it two blocks, he's definitely not going to make it 10 minutes," Perelman said. So he pulled over and asked the two to get out of his car. He told 10News that he even tried opening the door for one of them."Still nothing happening, so I say a third time, 'get out of the vehicle or I'm calling 911,'" Perelman said. That's when things got dangerous, and the passenger next to him attacked with a fury of punches."And he's not stopping, he's just beyond the point now," Perelman said. "Probably doesn't know what he's doing, just starts throwing punches at my head, I can't get him to stop. I've got my glasses on, he knocks my glasses off."Perelman says he was left with two options. Take the beating or jump out of the car. He took option two, jumping out of the car while it was still in drive and running to a nearby house to call the police.After the car crashed, the passengers seemed to have a moment of clarity and took off. Perelman says he left behind a shoe, a cell phone and ,000 dollars in damages to his car.Even though he had a bad experience, Perelman says he just wants to get back on the road. "I'm just happy that I was able to get out safely and I've got a few bruises on my head, but I was able to walk away, so I'm lucky that it didn't escalate," Perelman said. "I don't know if he has a gun or knife, I just said let me get out of the car I don't care about the vehicle right now."Since Uber knows who the men are, the plan now is to find them and press charges.10News reached out to Uber about the attack.
