SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a 14-year-old girl is shocked by her sudden death that could be flu-related.Julianna Campos died Feb. 12, after complaining of a headache and cold-like symptoms.Imelda Leyva, Julianna’s grandmother, said Julianna went to take a nap and never woke up. Julianna didn't have any health issues, according to the family.Doctors confirmed Julianna tested positive for the flu, according to her grandmother. However, they are still investigating whether the flu was the cause of death.Julianna’s family plans to hold her funeral on March 9. Family members also started a GoFundMe page to help pay for her services.As of 8:17 p.m. Wednesday night, the fund had raised more than ,200 of its ,000 goal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The city is backing state legislation that would change when police can use lethal force. The bill would authorize officers to use deadly force only when it is necessary to prevent imminent and serious bodily injury or death. Currently, police can shoot to kill when an objectively reasonable officer would do the same.Democratic Assemblywoman Shirley Weber, who represents the South Bay, co-authored the legislation."The current standard hits communities of color especially hard," she said. "Young black men are 20 times as likely to be killed by police as their white peers." More than 100 people spoke in favor of the bill Tuesday as dozens of officers looked on.San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit called the bill well-intentioned but based on flawed data. He noted while officers killed 172 people in 2017 and only half had guns, more than 90 percent had other potentially lethal weapons. "Officers must make the best call they can with the information available to them at a critical time, and sometimes factors like human limitations in processing information will cause them to make decisions that turn out to be wrong," he said. The bill's now in the assembly.The council voted 6-2, with Scott Sherman and Mark Kersey opposed. Councilman Chris Cate abstained. 1299

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The leader of a maritime smuggling ring operating in San Diego and Baja California has been arrested, according to officials.Guillermo Barba, 29, was arraigned Thursday and charged with conspiracy to bring in illegal aliens for financial gain and conspiracy to transport illegal aliens for financial gain, according to the Office Of The United States Attorney Southern District Of California.Barba is accused of being the leader of a smuggling ring based out of San Diego and Baja California, in which panga boats, pleasure crafts, and multiple load vehicles were used in maritime smuggling. Officials say the ring is believed to be responsible for at least 25 smuggling events since November 2017."In addition to undermining this nation’s border security, smuggling on the ocean is extremely dangerous for the individuals being smuggled," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "Barba’s arrest and the dismantling of this alien smuggling group is the product of outstanding federal and international law enforcement cooperation."Barba is scheduled for a detention hearing on Aug. 4.If convicted, he could face a mandatory minimum of three years in custody and up to 10 years in prison. 1208

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of killing his wife in their City Heights apartment appeared in court Tuesday. Bail was set at million at the arraignment for Abdiaziz Kerow, 45, who was arrested in Panama on March 20 and extradited to San Diego.Kerow is accused of killing his 36-year-old wife, Muna Salad Kuri. Kuri’s sister found the victim’s body in a bed in the couple’s home on the 4000 block of Van Dyke Avenue on March 4. Hundreds of Kuri's family members as well as members of the community attended the arraignment. So many people showed up, the courtroom was unable to accommodate the crowd. The victim's sister, Amiina Salad said her sister was "sweet, humble, she's funny. She's always there for you, no matter what happens, she's there."Salad also had a message for Kerow. "My sister is in heaven. You're going to rot in here and you're going to rot in hellfire.''Somali community leader says this is the first time domestic violence death that has affected a Somali woman in their San Diego community.
