The restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit in the last two months. “The numbers that have come in so far about restaurant closures and restaurant job losses, have been nothing short of staggering,” said Sean Kennedy with the National Restaurant Association.According to the National Restaurant Association, 8 million employees in the industry have lost their jobs. Since the pandemic began, that’s three times more jobs loss than other industry. In addition to job loss, total losses in revenue for restaurants stand at billion with projections that could go up to 0 billion.“It’s painful trying to manage this business,” said Ryan Fletter. “We are easily down 50% and I feel like we are enormously successful for being down only 50%. I have two restaurants and the other one is suffering a 90% loss.”Fletter is the owner of Barolo Grill and Chow Morso Osteria in Denver. Like the 60% of restaurants around the country that are open, the establishments have been surviving on take-out orders for food. However, both have also been able to sell to-go cocktails, since Colorado began a temporary allowance for this at the end of March. With no longer having dine-in service, selling liquor to-go with food has become a critical source of revenue. “Everything is lifeline right now,” said Fletter. “You take that away and it would be like standing on top of our head while we are underwater.”Colorado is not the only state to allow restaurants this additional stream of revenue. Around the country, 45 states have begun allowing restaurants and bars to now sell to-go cocktails and other liquor. “That has actually been a huge revenue generator,” said Kennedy. The National Restaurant Association believes the revenue stream has become a lifeline for the industry, but it is still not enough. “We are really at our most dangerous point right now, and it is why we need a federal solution from congress if restaurants are going to survive into the fall,” explained Kennedy.Kennedy and the National Restaurant Association have proposed stimulus package ideas for restaurants that include tax breaks and grant money for restaurants, but there has been little talk in Congress about it being part of the next stimulus package. For now, restaurants are relying on what has always kept them alive, their customers.“We hope that everyone will continue to reach out to their local restaurant and participate in whatever program they are doing, whether it is food or beverages or both,” said Fletter. “It’s why we are alive.” 2544

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has a new study resource, “Words of the Champions,” for students participating in spelling competitions occurring between August 2019 and March 2020. The Bee selected the 4,000 words for Words of the Champions from the Bee’s official dictionary, Merriam-Webster Unabridged. Words of the Champions replaces “Spell It!,” a collection of 1,150 words used by students to prepare for spelling bees since 2006. Each year, the Bee will refresh Words of the Champions by replacing 800 words. “Spellers and teachers told us they wanted more words, and we’ve delivered,” said Paige Kimble, executive director for the Bee. “This broader list was designed to challenge and inspire students and is the culmination of a year of research and development by our team.” Nested in Words of the Champions are 450 words sourced from the 18 engaging and grade-appropriate books included in the Bee’s 2020 Great Words, Great Works reading program. By reading the books, students can gain a deeper understanding of the words they are learning to spell. As they begin their spelling bee journey, they will spell many of these 450 words in classroom and school spelling competitions. On Aug. 20, Words of the Champions and other study materials will be available for teachers at Bee-enrolled schools to download from spellingbee.com. On the same day, an Amazon Kindle version of Words of the Champions will be available for purchase by members of the general public. About the Scripps National Spelling Bee: The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest-running educational program. The purpose of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. TORONTO, Canada – The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) says it won’t send its team to the Tokyo Olympics unless they’re postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 Games were set to start on July 24 and run through August 9, but the ongoing spread of the COVID-19 has many calling for them to be rescheduled. That includes the COC, which is asking the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee and the World Health Organization to postpone the Games for one year. COC said it would offer its full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the Games would bring.“While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community,” wrote 822

The U.S. Army hasn't been able to do in-person recruiting at events because of the pandemic, so its esports team has been stepping in to fill the gap, increasing their presence online.“When we're streaming on different platforms like Twitch or Mixer or YouTube or even Facebook, you're going to see more frequency of that for soldiers showcasing their skillsets in different games or playing a game just casually for anyone to come in and have a conversation,” said Sgt. 1st Class Chris Jones, general manager of the Army Esports Team. The team has also been running and sponsoring online tournaments during the pandemic. This is a shift from their efforts last year going to video gaming conventions across the country. They say the online tournaments get the word out about Army opportunities and then a recruiter can follow up with people playing. It's also attracting someone who may not have considered joining the military.“So, it’s coming from someone who may be super passionate about gaming and loves esports and then they find that we have a whole lot in common to show that there isn't a very specific person that enlists in the army that some people might believe,” said Jones. The soldiers on the Army Esports Team are assigned to do this as their full-time job in the military for up to three years. As they work to recruit more people, one thing that's helping make up for the current shortfall is the number of people who are choosing to extend their time with the military. The Army recently exceeded its retention goal. 1545

The San Francisco Police Department said on Tuesday that investigators now suspect a freelance journalist who had refused to reveal the identity of a confidential source took part in a conspiracy to steal a police report on the death of a public defender.Police Chief Bill Scott said at a press conference that there is a criminal investigation into whether that journalist, Bryan Carmody, was an "active participant in the commission of the criminal acts beyond his role with the news media.""Mr. Carmody was and continues to be viewed by investigators as a possible co-conspirator in this theft rather than a passive recipient of the stolen document," Scott said. He did not cite any evidence of Carmody's role in the alleged theft at the press conference.Scott made the statement after police officials said in court earlier in the day that Carmody will get all of his property back after it was seized in a raid on May 10.Press advocacy groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, released statements at the time condemning the raid. The Society of Professional Journalists Northern California chapter invoked the law designed to provide legal cover for journalists who want to protect the identity of an unnamed source."California's Shield Law protects journalists from being held in contempt for refusing to disclose their sources' identities and other unpublished/unaired information obtained during the news gathering process," SPJ NorCal said. "That this search was carried out weeks after Carmody declined a request from San Francisco police to divulge his sources shows an alarming disregard for the right to gather and report on information."The northern California-based freelance journalist 1729
