SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Honda has agreed to pay million to settle allegations surrounding airbag failures.The lawsuit was brought by a collation of Attorneys General in 48 states.According to the Attorney General of New York the settlement, "Concludes a multistate investigation into Honda's alleged failure to inform regulators and consumers of issues related to the significant risk of rupture in the frontal airbag systems installed in certain model cars, which could cause metal fragments to fly into the passenger compartments of many Honda and Acura vehicles."The California Attorney General’s Office says Honda also agreed to a number of injunctive terms to protect consumers, including requirements that it include design features that protect vehicle occupants in the event of an airbag rupture and a prohibition from engaging in false or misleading advertising related to the safety of its frontal airbags."For years, Honda failed to warn consumers and regulators of the potential dangers of its airbags. That type of business practice not only violates Californians' trust but endangers lives," said Attorney General Xavier Becerra. "Every time we get into our vehicle, safety is a priority. In case any company forgets that California is ready to remind you and hold you accountable."ABC 10News reached out to Honda for a comment on the settlement but did not hear back.According to the California Attorney General’s office, the ruptures have resulted in at least 14 deaths and over 200 injuries in the United States alone."It's a win for the consumer," said Alexander Brangman.On Sept. 7, 2014, Brangman's daughter Jewel rear-ended a van in her rental car on a freeway in Los Angeles. Four vehicles were involved. Everyone walked away from the crash, except her.Brangman said the shrapnel pierced her neck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of thousands of San Diego County workers are facing the prospect of fewer hours, lower paychecks, and even job loss.The workers are in the retail, leisure, and hospitality fields, which in all employs more than 350,000 workers in the region. The squeeze comes as restrictions increase related to the coronavirus, including a 30-day travel ban from Europe, a county ban on events of 250 or more people, and cancellations of major conventions. John McKlosky was one of those attendees, lamenting the shell of the Fiber Optic conference he attends annually. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in over two decades, there will be a new San Diego County Supervisor for District 1. Nora Vargas will be the first Latina to ever serve on the Board of Supervisors. The Democrat will take over for Supervisor Greg Cox, who is termed out. She beat her Democratic opponent, state Sen. Ben Hueso, by roughly 13%. Nora Vargas, a Chula Vista resident, said her background is in health care and education. She's served on the board at Southwestern College since 2013; she's been board president since 2018. She's also an executive at Planned Parenthood. Vargas said her top priority as she heads into office is the COVID-19 pandemic. District 1 primarily serves the South Bay, which is one of the areas hardest hit by the pandemic in the entire county. "For me, it’s really important that we find a balance -- how do we make sure that our small businesses are thriving, that they stay open but at the same time that our communities are healthy and safe? That has to be a priority," explained Vargas. Vargas was born in Tijuana and raised in Chula Vista where she became a U.S. citizen. As the first Latina to serve on the board, she hopes she won't be the last. "I see that as a big responsibility but also as a great opportunity to have dialogue about the issues that really matter for our communities," said Vargas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fifty years ago this week, millions of Americans sat glued to their televisions as the first humans prepared to step on the moon.The defining moment was filled with both excitement and tension, happening less than a decade after President John F. Kennedy set the ambitious goal. "I was a young fighter pilot in Germany at the time, and when I heard him say we were going to go the moon within the decade of 1969, that was eight-and-a-half years, I said man, I mean, we can't possibly do that," said Charlie Duke. Little did Duke know he would have a front-row seat to the historic mission, becoming an astronaut in 1966.During the Apollo 11 mission, Duke served as Capsule Commander (CAPCOM), meaning he communicated directly with the Apollo 11 astronauts. Duke says after the July 16, 1969 launch everything was initially running smoothly."We gave them a-go for descent, and they started the engine and then almost immediately we started having this series of problems," remembers Duke.Communications were going in and out, and the landing computer was signaling an overload."The tension with all of these problems building up began to mount in Mission Control so the closer we got to the ground, or to the moon, the more tense it became," said Duke.The crew was off target for the landing, forced to fly manually to find a safe spot to touch down at, with only minutes left of fuel. "It was really tense, so you hung on every foot of altitude and every second at the end there, but we made it, with a few seconds to go," said Duke. Duke says once he heard the following words from Neil Armstrong it was as if a big balloon popped, dissolving all of the tension in Mission Control. "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed," Armstrong said as the Eagle landing module reached the moon's surface on July 20."Roger, Twank ...Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the first time since his arrest, the La Jolla restaurant owner charged with rape is speaking publicly. Daniel Dorado is testifying in his defense.Eight women have come forward saying Dorado drugged and sexually assaulted them over the course of a decade. The owner of the Voce del Mar restaurant in Birdrock faces 35 felony charges for allegedly raping women after drugging their drinks. "She was interested in being alone with me," said Dorado. "She initiated the physical contact."Prosecutors say in at least two of the cases, a sexual relationship occurred after the women got visibly sick and threw up.
