And as the trend continues, Hawthorne Country Store in Escondido has seen a resurgence in homesteading."Homesteading is a little bit like the original McGuyvering," says managing partner Heather Thelen.She says it's a lifestyle about being self-sufficient when it comes to food and agriculture."Anything from gardening, food collection, hunting, preserving cheese, and using animals for food or for other uses," Thelen said.And because of the current pandemic, everything from chickens to pickling has become very common and popular. "To think that this is something we've been reminded about with COVID. When our supply chains got interrupted, and there wasn't availability of some of the things like meats or products, we just couldn't get because we couldn't go out," says Thelen.And at Hawthorne Country Store, they are offering and education is homesteading. And how in 2020, living off the land, can be quite simple and fun. "We're doing a few classes online, as well as YouTube videos to help people," Thelen said. "We want people to have access to local help, because the videos and the television shows that are out there, are in the Midwest. Even though that is fantastic information, it might not be the right information for Southern California."Thelen says it's a good reminder that if you can't buy it, make it."People are re-remembering that there were ways to do it, other than wrapped in plastic from a grocery store," she added. 1577

Families still returning home to San Diego after surviving the deadly earthquake in Mexico City.Jorge Jiron and his wife are back in the US after nearly 24 hours of chaos. "when it hit it started shaking real bad," he said. He was in a building that sits on the side of a canyon nearly 12 floors up. Suddenly, everything started to move. "\We were close to the exit, on your way out it is shaking hard but you're really paying attention to everybody and their instructions to get out," said Jiron. "Then, that's when you realize everything is shaking, the windows are shaking the hard, the electric poles are really moving, then you see people that are nervous."The 7.1 magnitude quake was crumbling buildings, shattering windows and sending debris flying through the air. "You're walking you're moving, so you don't realize how bad it is until you're actually standing in one place and you see everything moving around you. When you realize it's already stopped, it takes seconds."They were supposed to fly back to the US Tuesday night, but there was no way out. "The main road that goes to the airport was completely packed with cars. A 30-minute drive would have been 5 or 6 hours," said Jiron.  1241

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A surfer died after being rescued from Swami's Beach Monday morning, Encinitas city officials confirm. Lifeguards and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported ocean rescue in the surf line at Swami's Beach just after 11 a.m. Monday. After arriving, crews found a man submerged with his surfboard attached and floating on the surface of the water while bystanders tried to rescue the surfer. The man was taken to shore where crews performed CPR. He was then taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died. At this time, the circumstances surrounding the death are unclear. 650

FBI Director Chris Wray told senators Wednesday that the FBI's investigation into Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was "limited in scope" and thus "consistent with the standard process."Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a house party when the two were in high school. Both Ford and Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, prompting the weeklong FBI investigation and hundreds to protest on Capitol Hill. The Senate reviewed the FBI's findings after they were sent it last Thursday and confirmed Kavanaugh by a 50-48 vote Saturday afternoon. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A pride flag is now flying outside Encinitas City Hall, overlooking the city's downtown area.The Encinitas City Council voted 4-0 Wednesday to hoist the flag to commemorate Pride month. The action comes after the Trump administration denied U.S. Embassy requests to hoist the flag, saying government buidlings should only fly the American flag. At the meeting Wednesday, councilmembers said they wanted to show the city as inclusive and welcoming. They added they want to push back against a recent uptick in hate crimes against the LGBTQ commumity - and potential rollbacks of federal protections for them in the military, workplace, and health care."I think it's critically important that we stand up and celebrate," said Joe Mosca, the city council's first openly gay member. "We celebrate the advancements that have been made and we're ready to fight for the future, and make sure that advancements that have been made haven't been rolled back."Lisa Nava, a 30-year Encinitas resident and LGBTQ advocate, watched the Pride flag go up in memory of her brother David, who died of AIDS in the 1980s."It was actually the first time i ever saw true love, between him and his partner, and I believed in my core being that there was no reason two people couldn't love each other and be out in the world loving each other," she said. The city's move comes after California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the Pride flag to fly above the state capitol this week. Tony Krvaric, who heads the Republican Party of San Diego County, said there are bigger issues in the country than which flags to fly."That said it seems common sense that as a general rule government buildings should just fly the American flag and not be used for making political points one way or the other," Krvaric said.
