SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 200 people in San Diego County are currently being monitored over novel coronavirus concerns, county health officials said Friday.The 204 people under county supervision include those deemed at risk of having been exposed to the virus due to close contact with confirmed cases or because of travel to China in the past 14 days, the county said.Those individuals are monitoring their health under the supervision of county health officials.RELATED: San Diego Board of Supervisors extends coronavirus emergenciesSo far, 338 people in all have been monitored by the county, with 134 people completing their time under supervision.Health officials say the CDC is conducting screening for those landing at one of 11 U.S. airports from China. From there, if a patient shows no symptoms they are self-quarantined at home for self-monitoring with public health supervision. San Diego has had two confirmed cases of coronavirus, or COVID-19. One patient has since recovered from the virus and been released. The second patient was still receiving care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 700 underclassmen moved into dorms at San Diego State University Thursday, and a new report says a growing number of them are from out of state.A new analysis by USA Today says 78 percent of SDSU's incoming freshman were from California students in 2017. That compares to 88 percent in 2012. Out-of-state students pay an extra ,880 in tuition each year. "The cost is definitely a part of it, but, just, Florida isn't as appealing. Too hot, too humid," said Jackson Noye, an incoming freshman from Jacksonville. "Nothing can really beat San Diego."The University called the study "a bit misleading." In a statement, it said enrollment for in-state and out-of-state students is increasing, and that any suggestion it is prioritizing out-of-state students is untrue. "The number of students SDSU can admit and teach, as defined by the resident target enrollments, is contingent upon the amount of state funding allocated," the statement read in part. "SDSU is given an enrollment target for in-state students every year, and the state only provides funding to teach the targeted number of students. For that reason, SDSU currently enrolls the number of students funded."While freshman admission may be getting more competitive, many times students have a better chance of getting in to their top choice as a transfer. "The most selective public four-year universities often have higher acceptance rates for transfer applicants than first-year applicants," said Craig Meister, an admissions consultant. Rob Franek, editor and chief of the Princeton Review, said in addition to having solid test scores and a high GPA, students can set themselves apart by showing their desire to go to their top choice. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are searching for a gunman after a teenager was shot Friday night outside of a movie theater in Escondido.The shooting happened around 8:50 p.m. at the Regal Cinema on West Valley Parkway in Escondido.Police say the victim was shot in the calf and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.The shooting is believed to be related to fight among a group of teenagers in the strip mall.They are now reviewing surveillance video in their investigation of the incident. 513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Navy Region Southwest has a brand new, state of the art headquarters on land that was recently a barren lot, and they didn’t have to pay for it.The 15-acre plot sits on Pacific Highway near the USS Midway and has been owned by the Navy for about a hundred years. Navy Region Southwest Executive Director Joe Stuyvesant said it was once a hub for ships.“Ships would come in and refuel, replenish, resupply so it was mostly supply warehousing and things that were here,” he said.RELATED: Massive biotech hub planned for San Diego's waterfrontEventually, ships stopped coming to the area and instead stopped at other nearby bases. The warehouses that were built remained, and the Navy turned those into office buildings. Now, just one warehouse stands. This is the old building for Navy offices and will soon be torn down now that the new headquarters opened in October.Stuyvesant estimated the cost of their new building at around 5,000,000, explaining the deal they made so the Navy did not have to pay for the facility.“In return for leasing that land to the developer, they would build the Navy a new headquarters building,” he said.Manchester Financial Group signed a lease on the land in 2006, agreeing to fund the 17-story, 373,000-square-foot building. The inside of the building features historic Navy photos, offices, conference space, a gym for employees, and the oceanfront view. A restaurant for the public will also be added to the first floor.Construction on the new Navy facility started in 2018 and ended in 2020. Now, the last remaining warehouse that once housed the Navy offices is set to be torn down.“It really as underutilized and frankly not an attractive parcel to be really on the front doorstep of San Diego,” said Stuyvesant.Earlier in 2020, Manchester sold part of the lot to IQHQ, which is currently building a science hub. Manchester still holds part of the property and plans to build a hotel and plaza on that space.Stuyvesant said this deal is a win-win because the Navy got a new facility that they would not otherwise be able to fund, and the city will benefit from a nicer view and the taxes that come from the property.“The money that we have for facilities really needs to be focused on building piers, building electrical infrastructure, building hangars for the aircrafts, repairing runways,” said Stuyvesant. 2377
