BALTIMORE — A 79-year-old New York woman lost thousands of dollars after she fell for the "grandparent scam."Earlier this week, the woman received a call from someone posing as her granddaughter. The woman on the phone said, "Grandma, I need help," then handed the phone to someone claiming to be her lawyer.Susan Mayorga's mother thought it was her eldest granddaughter on the phone and agreed to hear the man out."He said, you need to send me ,000 immediately in cash, wrapped in a magazine, here's the address, send it overnight early delivery UPS, and everything will be cleared up," said Mayorga.Mayorga's mom went straight to the bank, then to UPS where she mailed ,000 in cash to 208 South Loudon Avenue, a vacant home in Baltimore. The next day, she received another call.“[He said], 'Oh, I didn't realize there's a gun involved and gunpowder went off, so it's more than a misdemeanor, we need another ,000,'” said Mayorga. Her mom only had ,000 left, and sent it. But before it got there, Mayorga's mom discovered her granddaughter was fine. She immediately told her children and they got to work calling UPS.“I immediately got the tracking number, I called UPS, and spoke to a supervisor and told them it's a scam, there's cash in the envelope this cannot be delivered. It's a scam, please hold the envelope and have it sent back,” Mayorga said.UPS tracking history shows they received a request to place the order on hold, but it was still delivered.“Someone was outside waiting for it and signed his name at 7 a.m. and took the package and left,” Mayorga said.Last year, 1 in 5 people lost money to impostor schemes like the grandparent scam. The total loss amounted to 8 million, according to the Federal Trade Commission. And scammers get away with it because they know people will do anything for the ones they love.“It's just sad because she doesn't have a lot of money and she’s like, I would do anything, give my last penny for my grandchildren, so it's just extra sad,” said Mayorga.Mayorga’s mother called the scammer and he answered. He said he received the package but wanted to know why she tried to hold it up. When she said she knew it was a scam, he threatened her then hung up.UPS said they're investigating what happened to the package. 2315

At first glance, you may not notice what's different about this box of cereal. Maybe it's just one of those special editions that's in stores for a short time. But if you take a closer look you might ask, what's up with that? When Naomi Frierson walked into her local Walmart and down the aisle, her focus was getting her mom a box of her favorite cereal."I just picked it up and I kind of looked at it," Frierson said. "And I figured it was one of those special edition type of boxes. ... I didn't think much of it."But when she got home, her husband noticed."We proceed to look at it further and realize that not only are there mugshots but they're serial killers," Frierson said. "Not the C-E-R-E-A-L kind unfortunately."The box of "Life" cereal is covered with people synonymous with death. Larry, the Quaker Oats mascot is Jeffrey Dahmer. And instead of being made with 20 whole grains, it's made with 20 whole brains."And then on the nutrition panel you've got stuff like instead of cholesterol it says chloroform," Frierson said. "Down here it says cyanide."Frierson said she was creeped out, but her husband loved it."He immediately recognized all of the different players in the game," Frierson said. "And he thought it was just the coolest thing ever and assured me that it must be art."He was right. The box was a class project made by Lauren Miller, a senior art student at the University of South Florida."I kind of just wanted it to blend in with everything else," Miller said. "I took a bunch of pictures that I found online of serial killers and I used Photoshop to add them to the Life cereal box. I just thought it would be interesting to use Life cereals since these people did take away lives."Miller has a large version of the box in her studio but wanted to see how people reacted to this smaller version in the community.Frierson said, "I had people on my personal Facebook when I posted that thing like, 'Oh my gosh I need to have that. How can I get one? Are there more?'"Frierson said she's keeping this box, and Miller is exploring creating more to sell.Miller said she left a note on the box saying it was art and had already been paid for. But for Frierson, the initial jitters and overall experience was well worth the price."I think (it was) three dollars well spent for an interesting piece of art," Frierson said.A creepy class project, taking on a life of its own."I would say a solid 'A' so if you didn't get an 'A' I'll call your professor," Frierson said. 2539

AURORA, Colo. – Hundreds of people are expected to gather Friday evening to demand that three officers involved in the in-custody death of Elijah McClain be fired by the Aurora Police Department.“For ten months Aurora Police Department has shielded Elijah McClain's murderers on their force from facing any form of justice. It was only last Friday, just ahead of a mass march for Elijah, that they pulled the three killers off the streets and put them on paid desk duty,” the Party for Socialism and Liberation – Denver (PSL) said in a statement about the event. “We need to make it clear that this is absolutely NOT enough.”Last Friday, APD announced officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema had been taken off street duty "because of threats and harassment," according to a police spokesperson. Police said those threats involved phone calls as well as email messages.Officials did not disclose to which department the officers were reassigned, but said they were working in a "non-enforcement capacity."The PSL says they expect murder charges “for the three killers” and demand that APD fire all three “IMMEDIATELY.”Organizers of Friday’s protest are also calling for the release of the names — as well as the immediate termination — of all officers involved in an incident involving a photograph taken near the site where McClain struggled with officers. The officers were seen in the picture imitating the carotid hold used on McClain before the 23-year-old Black man died last August.RELATED: Officer who was depicted in photograph at site of Elijah McClain's arrest has resignedThe rally will start at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Billings St. and Evergreen Avenue, the site where organizers say, “Elijah was brutalized and killed and where APD danced on his grave.” From there, protesters will march to the APD headquarters at the Aurora Municipal Center. The march and protest will put APD’s response to test once again, following a violent night of confrontation between officers and protesters last Saturday.MORE: Aurora Police Interim Chief defends police response to Elijah McClain protestOrganizers say there will be people of all ages at Friday’s protest, “who do not want a repeat of last Saturday’s violence from APD, but (who) will not be intimidated out of exercising their First Amendment right to assemble and voice their concerns.”McClain’s death, largely unnoticed for the past 10 months, recently garnered national media attention following nationwide calls to reform interactions between police and Black Americans in the wake of George Floyd’s death. On Tuesday, the Colorado U.S. Attorney's Office, along with several other law enforcement agencies, announced they've been reviewing facts in the death of the 23-year-old Black man since last year for a potential federal civil rights investigation, saying they were aware of the photo allegations which surfaced Monday evening and were gathering further information about the incident. This story was originally published by óscar Contreras on KMGH in Denver. 3062

As the Dude would say.. New S**T has come to light. I have been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good. I’m starting treatment and will keep you posted on my recovery.— Jeff Bridges (@TheJeffBridges) October 20, 2020 323
