SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- Crews are battling a rapidly-spreading brush fire in northern Los Angeles County late Thursday night amid a statewide Red Flag Warnings.News station ABC7 is reporting that the 15-acre blaze, named Saddleridge Fire, is burning near homes and power lines.The fire erupted around 10 p.m. near the westbound 210 Freeway near Yarnell Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.Flames stopped traffic along the 210 when the fire jumped from the westbound side to the eastbound side. The attorney for the limousine company whose vehicle crashed in upstate New York on Saturday disputed statements from officials that the stretched Ford Excursion should have never been on the road.Prestige Limousine & Chauffer Service attorney Lee Kindlon said the state Department of Transportation conducted a periodic inspection last week and discovered "minor safety infractions" including inoperative or defective windshield wipers and a broken latch on a window.Both issues were fixed and, "as recently as last week they were told by the Department of Transportation that they could, that this vehicle was roadworthy and they could drive it," Kindlon said. "I am disputing that any recent failures of minor safety defects contributed to this crash," he said.State officials charged back, saying the vehicle was not allowed to be in service."The assertion that the limousine was cleared to be on the road following the September inspection is categorically false," said Joseph Morrissey, spokesman for the New York State Department of Transportation, in a statement. "The vehicle was subject to inspections and the owner was warned not to operate the vehicle; the vehicle was placed out of service."For reasons still unknown, the limo plowed through a stop sign in Schoharie and crashed into a parked SUV. (KGTV) - A freeway sign indicating drivers were using Interstate 5 South fell into traffic lanes Friday afternoon at the start of the holiday travel rush in Sylmar, north of Los Angeles.A driver reported to the California Highway Patrol that most of the sign fell into the middle lanes of I-5 at SR-14 at 1:15 p.m. Some parts of the sign were left dangling from the rigging.At least one driver hit some of the debris, according to the CHP’s online report. There were no reports of any injuries.Officers shut down south I-5 and diverted traffic into truck lanes, backing up the freeway into Santa Clarita.Caltrans crews removed the dangling sign and traffic on south I-5 was reopened about 3:30 p.m.The cause of the fall is under investigation. 766

With Christmas just 10 days away, public health experts are urging families to be cautious around the holiday to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.“If people interpret the vaccine being here as an opportunity to lower their guard, then, unfortunately, we’re going to see more sorrow and death, and those are all preventable,” said USF Health professor Dr. Marissa Levine.Since the Thanksgiving holiday, we’ve recently seen an upward trend in COVID-19 cases in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Levine points to an increase in hospitalizations, too, though not as steep of an increase as what we saw this summer.“This is happening with Christmas and New Year’s just around the corner, so all bets are off in terms of what happens after that,” said Levine. “That will really depend on what we do between now and the beginning of January.”The CDC says celebrating the holiday virtually or with people you live with poses the lowest risk for spread. It says getting together with family and friends who don’t live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19.If you are having a small gathering, the CDC suggests limiting the number of people, hosting outdoors rather than indoors, and having supplies like extra masks available. If inside, experts recommend opening windows and doors to increase ventilation. “I would really push people to do everything possible to try to keep your distance, and if you can’t, wear your face coverings all the time that you’re not eating,” said Levine.The CDC also says people who have COVID symptoms, are waiting on test results, or are at an increased risk of severe illness should not go to an in-person celebration. If you travel, the CDC says testing does not eliminate all risk, but it can help make travel safer. Still, it says the safest thing to do is to stay home.“I think the real message here is there’s hope. There’s lots of hope ahead.
