Who will be drafted first overall in Wednesday's NBA Draft? There isn't a consensus No. 1 pick this year because the coronavirus pandemic upended March Madness. Hence, college basketball players could not make any impression or allow NBA teams to evaluate players. The draft typically occurs in June, but the league changed it multiple times before officials decided to do it virtually due to the pandemic.Commissioner Adam Silver, along with Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, will announce the selections live at ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.ESPN will have live cameras set to look into 17 team draft rooms, USA Today reported. The first overall pick belongs to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and it's projected that they'll take LaMelo Ball. Still, he could also go No. 2 to Golden State Warriors or No. 3 to Charlotte Hornets.According to ESPN, other top prospects in this year's draft are Georgia guard Anthony Edwards and Memphis center James Wiseman. When Snapchat introduced its latest redesign late last year, they billed it as way to make the photo and video messaging app more personable. They promised the redesign would allow users to find friends more easily and eliminate misleading news stories. However, many users aren't buying the new design. The latest update has received mostly negative reviews online since it was pushed out earlier this month. Users claim the new version is harder to navigate, especially the new "content" page where content from celebrities and media outlets now flows. I’m seeing this same comment so often. I liked that you guys felt like we were friends. I’m sad it doesn’t feel like that anymore. How many people have to hate an update for it to be reconsidered? https://t.co/PI7OAf9Qlg— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) February 9, 2018 848

With most Kindergarten through grade 12 schools starting in less than a month, many parents are trying to figure out what is best for their family when given the option between in-person or virtual learning? What about preschool for 3 to 5-year-olds who were looking forward to in-person learning this fall? For parents who believe it’s safer to keep their child home, there are ways to get them learning beyond the A, B, C’s.“With our younger children we know they really thrive in predictability and routine and that is all gone right now,” said parenting expert Carly Dorogi.Preschool participation has fallen by half during the pandemic, according to the National Institute for Early Education Research. But that doesn’t mean kids can’t learn at home.Dorogi says children ages 3 to 5 can learn math using everyday items.“If I have five Cheerios on the table this is what five looks like and it’s a small amount compared to when I have ten Cheerios on the table,” Dorogi said.Playing with dolls or action figures can help language skills, forcing children to talk and put sentences together. Playtime is motor skills time.“Our little guys can actually improve their handwriting by playing with play dough or doing anything that’s a small motor that strengthens their hand muscles,” Dorogi said.If you want to introduce virtual learning, Dorogi suggests Osmo’s starter kit. It’s an app and hands-on play.If you’re looking for workbooks, check out Grand Haven-Based School Zone Publishing. They say their preschool-aged items have been selling more now due to the pandemic. And they have an app called Anywhere Teacher that has a curriculum to follow.Barbara Peacock is the managing director of School Zone Publishing.“What they need to learn first, then next and it’s a step by step program so it’s really nice to kind of tie the two together both print material, doing flashcards, working on worksheets and then putting them for 30-minutes a day on Anywhere Teacher and working with them,” she said.It is OK if your preschooler can’t sit still.“They need to move," Dorogi explained. "Sitting at a desk for even an hour is too much and I don’t want parents to feel like that’s the expectation. So, think about alternative seating. If your child learns best laying on the floor or sitting in a bean bag.”Dorogi suggests something as simple as a yoga ball on a milk crate that allows your fidgety child to focus.“That is truly how their brain works and when we allow them to move and interact and talk that’s when they are going to learn,” she said. This story was originally reported by Syma Chowdhry at WXYZ. 2615

With a crowd of onlookers gathered around, New York Police officers encircle a woman and her child on the ground. One officer reaches down and begins to pull. The officer yanks harder, and harder, and the woman's cries become louder."You're hurting my son! You're hurting my son!" she yells.A tug of war ensues, and as noise from the horrified crowd builds, an officer brandishes a yellow stun gun and begins to point it around the room, a government welfare office in Brooklyn. The stunning and hectic scene, captured on video and posted to Facebook, ends with the woman in handcuffs escorted from the scene — and her 1-year-old son elsewhere. A family member took custody of the child following the arrest, the NYPD said. The forceful arrest of the unarmed mother at a social services office has caused a significant backlash, particularly from those who saw it as an unnecessarily violent escalation and a symbol of how the poor are treated in America."Being poor is not a crime. The actions of the NYPD in this video are appalling and contemptible," said Letitia James, the Public Advocate for New York City.Facing criticism, the NYPD and the New York City Human Resources Administration are now reviewing that December 7 arrest."Video images of the incident in the 84th precinct are troubling," the NYPD said in a statement, adding that the review will "include examination of all available video of the incident."Corey Johnson, the speaker of the New York City Council, said it was "unacceptable, appalling and heart breaking.""I'd like to understand what transpired and how these officers or the NYPD justifies this. It's hard to watch this video," he said on Twitter. On Facebook, James called for a full investigation into the officers' conduct and said the results should be made public. She also called for the officers involved, including their assigned supervisor, to be assigned to desk duty until an investigation is complete."No mother should have to experience the trauma and humiliation we all witnessed in this video," she said. 2056

With COVID-19 cases surging across the country, public health officials and ICU doctors are pleading with Americans to reconsider gathering with family members ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday for fear of spreading the virus even further.“We really don’t have a national or even multi-state plan, and that worries me,” said Dr. Stephen Morse with Columbia University. While he strongly recommends against it, Dr. Morse knows inevitably some people will still get together on Thursday. His advice is to have a multi-layered safety approach. The first layer involves testing. He’s urging people to avoid those rapid tests if they can because they’re less accurate. With so many Americans trying to get tested right now, officials also say it’s important to plan ahead and be prepared to potentially not get results back before Thanksgiving.“Testing is really important because it’s the only way we can find people who aren’t obviously sick and stop them,” Dr. Morse added.Health officials say if you are planning a small family gathering, get tested before you see high-risk family members. Americans are also being urged to consider virtual holiday gatherings whenever possible. If you are gathering with people outside your household, eat in separate rooms or consider eating outdoors.“What I’ve seen is once it gets into a family, because we let our guard down around our family, everybody gets infected,” explained Dr. John Coleman, who works in the ICU at Northwestern University’s teaching hospital in Chicago.Dr. Coleman says there are just too many variables to consider when it comes to gathering for Thanksgiving this year.“I think we are on the cusp of some very, very dark months. What we’ve seen is the increase of COVID across the nation is going to eventually stress the health system.” 1804
