ANDERSON, South Carolina — We all remember that feeling of euphoria as kids, you wake up on a cold, snowy morning and hear those two magical words, "snow day!" Well, it looks like that will soon become a thing of the past in one school district.Pause for the gasps of horror, yes, a school district in South Carolina is ditching snow days. Instead, the district will require students to do classwork online instead of watching television reruns or indulging in a Netflix binge.Last week, Anderson School District Five announced on Facebook it was selected to pilot the first eLearning program in the state of South Carolina. Here's how it works: When nasty weather strikes, these students will need to review assignments using their school-issued Chromebooks, which don't require internet access. The assignments will be uploaded via Google Classroom.Students who are having difficulty accessing those assignments or who are too young to have a Chromebook will be given a five-day grace period. 1037
An explosion leveled a home in Cleveland on Monday, and just one day after losing everything, strangers are helping themselves to the homeowner's belongings left behind. One man loaded up his truck with an oven. Another grabbed a table and chairs. Cleveland police said because it is not a crime scene, they will only respond to calls about looting. And to add insult to injury, the city has hit the homeowner, Nita Moore, with a laundry list of citations. Just after the explosion happened, one 45-year-old woman was taken from the explosion site in the 11000 block of Primrose Avenue to MetroHealth in critical condition. Witnesses at the scene said she appeared to be badly burned. According to the fire chief, she was in the street in front of the home when EMS arrived. 806
America's beloved monarch butterfly is facing possible listing as a threatened species. The Trump administration is expected to announce this week if it supports protecting the monarch under the endangered species act. Climate change, development and heavy farm use of herbicides have wiped out well over a hundred million acres of monarch habitat. And numbers of West Coast monarchs in particular have plummeted from the millions in the 1980s to the low thousands today. Environmental groups say grassroots efforts to raise the monarchs' host plant, milkweed, aren't enough to save the orange and black butterfly in the global extinction crisis. 654
