At first, Hillary Slusser thought she had the flu.She hadn't been feeling well for a couple weeks but, after getting really sick at work, she went home and took not one, but three pregnancy tests. Just to be sure.Long story short, she was pregnant. But she wasn't the only one.14 nurses, two doctors and one social worker are all expectingBefore Slusser had even publicly announced her pregnancy, her friend and fellow nurse in the Emergency Department at Vanderbilt University's medical center posted her sonogram online.A week later, another nurse in their department posted that she was expecting, too.A week later, it was another nurse.Now, there are 17 people in her department who are pregnant -- 14 nurses, two doctors and one social worker -- all due between July and December. And, with others having had babies earlier in the year, Slusser said there would be over 20 births in the department by the end of 2019."By the time it got to be 17, everybody was just like, 'There is something going,'" Slusser told CNN. "But it was very exciting to be sharing this with all the girls."For the majority of the women, this will be their first child, which makes the occasion even more special.Everyone is pitching in so they can keep doing their jobsWith 17 pregnancies, though, comes 17 months-long absences from work. Slusser is taking 16 weeks off, but she said not everyone is that fortunate. Most are taking 12, and the department has already sent out an email asking for delivery dates in preparation for the absences to come.The department has been very supportive, Slusser said, with people taking on extra weight. Most of the women work in trauma, which she said can be labor intensive. Staff members must wear heavy protective gear beneath their gown, along with gloves, a mask, an eye shield and a hairnet, all just to protect from blood and body fluids. Understandably, wearing all that while eight months pregnant can be a lot.The department has moved some of the women from working trauma because of their pregnancies, which Slusser said has been heartbreaking. But others in the department have been helping."Even our attending physicians help lift patients over so I don't have to do that," Slusser said. "Little things like that make us still be able to do our jobs."It's still stressful, and Slusser said she does get a bit more tired throughout her shift. But with all the support from her coworkers, she'll be ready for the big day. 2466

By 2060, almost a quarter of all U.S. residents will be over age 65, and life expectancy will reach an all-time high of 85 years, according to new reports the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday.The growth in life expectancy in the U.S. over the next four decades is expected to be slower than it was in the four previous decades. Between 1970 and 2015, life expectancy rose by almost 8 years, but it’s only predicted to rise about 6 years between 2017 and 2060. That’s because in the latter half of the 20th century, there were decreases in infectious diseases and cardiovascular deaths, increases in vaccinations as well as the promotion of exercise and anti-smoking campaigns.Looking forward, “the prevalence of preventable health risks — such as smoking, obesity, and, more recently, opioid-related overdoses — hinders overall population health and contributes to slowed gains in life expectancy,” according to the report which uses the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2017 National Population Projections.Although women are still projected to live longer than men by 2060, as they do now, life expectancy is expected to grow larger for men than woman. While all racial and ethnic groups are expected to have gains in life expectancy, the biggest ones are projected to be for black men, American Indian men and Alaska native men, according to the report.The U.S. is expected to grow by almost a quarter in the next four decades, from about 332 million people today to 404 million people by 2060. By 2028, the percentage of foreign-born people will be 14.9%, the highest level since 1850, according to the Census Bureau.But growth hinges on U.S. immigration policy, according to the Census Bureau.With high levels of immigration, defined as an increase of 50% above last decade’s levels, the U.S. population could grow to 447 million people by 2060. With no immigration, the United States would lose population after 2035, and the country’s population would decline to 320 million by 2060, according to the Census Bureau.Immigration also will determine the nation’s diversity by 2060, said demographer William Frey of The Brookings Institution.By 2045, whites will represent less than half of the U.S. population under current projections, but that could speed up to 2040 under the high immigration scenario, he said.“If immigration was stopped, then we will stay majority white until 2060 but barely at 51.1 percent,” Frey said in an email. “But the story is different for the young under age 30 population.”For those under age 30, the population becomes “minority white” in 2022 with the high immigration scenario. Under current projections, it crosses that threshold in 2024. Without immigration, whites under age 30 will be in the minority by 2032, Frey said.Starting in 2030, international migration will be the biggest driver of population growth in the U.S., exceeding natural increases.The country’s population growth will slow down over the next four decades, growing by about 2.3 million people a year through 2030. Are you ready for fall? Dunkin' hopes you are ready as it announced on Monday that its pumpkin spice flavors will be available on Aug. 21. According to Dunkin', its stores will feature several new products: A Cinnamon Spice Pumpkin Spice Latte and Apple Cider Donuts and Munchkins donut holes. This is in addition to its lineup of pumpkin flavored coffees, pumpkin donuts and pumpkin muffins. Dunkin's release of the fall favorites might predate Starbucks' release. Starbucks, which hasn't officially announced when its pumpkin spice lattes will be available, generally makes its fall lineup available in late August. Dunkin' also announced that eight of its 12,900 locations will be converted into "Pumpkin" locations on Aug. 14. Those eight Pumpkin locations will be serving free coffee to hundreds of customers, and have pumpkin flavored products available a week early.
