NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Police say a 29-year-old South Florida man shot his mother following an argument over orange juice, an air conditioner remote and the use of her car. Luis Pages told police he “he lost it” during the Sunday evening argument and shot 59-year-old Miriam Gonzalez multiple times in their North Miami Beach home. He's charged with one count of second-degree murder and is being held without bond. Pages told investigators he tried to shoot himself too, but was out of bullets. He then called 911. When an officer arrived Pages told him, “take me to jail." 590

NEWPORT, Wales — A 5-year-old girl in Newport, Wales, died just hours after a doctor refused to see her because she was late to her appointment, according to the BBC.The girl's mother, Shanice Clark, has been searching for answers since her daughter, Ellie-May, died from bronchial asthma in 2015, according to the New York Post. Thanks to a coroner’s inquest into her daughter's death, she was finally given some answers on Monday.The coroner ruled that Grange Clinic “missed” the opportunity to “provide potentially live-saving treatment” to her child, Sky News reports.The 5-year-old girl was reportedly not seen by a doctor, despite having an emergency appointment,  because it operated a "10-minute rule."Clark said she and her daughter arrived only five minutes late because they didn't have a car. She said she warned them she might be late when she called the clinic. According to the coroner, this was the first time the rule had been enforced in regards to an emergency appointment. Reports also state that Clark was reportedly told to come back in the morning without the doctor even looking at her daughter’s medical records, which would have shown that the child has a history of asthma.“From the evidence before me, it is not possible for me to determine with certainty whether an earlier intervention would have altered the outcome for Ellie, but nonetheless Ellie should have been seen by a [doctor] that day, and she was let down by the failures in the system,” the coroner wrote.According to the New York Post, Grange Clinic released a statement, saying: “Dr. Rowe knows that nothing can be said to Ellie-May’s family to make a difference, but she would like to say how truly sorry she is.”The coroner plans to write a letter to the health board and the clinic in hopes of addressing the tragedy and preventing similar situations in the future. NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – A man in Massachusetts is taking extreme measures to ensure his Trump campaign sign isn’t tampered with.John Oliveria of New Bedford says his sign started disappearing from his yard and after going through six, the Navy veteran was fed up.Oliveria, a member of the New Bedford School Committee, has now put electric wire around the sign in his front yard and he tells WJAR it has certainly sent a message to thieves.After two weeks with the fence, the Republican says the sign has stood its ground.Oliveria says Americans have to be able to respect each other, despite political differences. Otherwise, he argues nothing will get accomplished.Oliveria believes the sign supporting President Donald Trump’s reelection bid was specifically singled out, because he also has another sign encouraging people to vote, but that one was never touched.For those wondering if putting electric fencing in residential areas is legal in the state, WJAR reports that it depends on the laws and regulations in each community. NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — President Donald Trump thanked an Indiana teacher for helping thwart a school shooting on Friday at Noblesville West Middle School outside of Indianapolis."Thanks to very brave Teacher & Hero Jason Seaman of Noblesville, Indiana, for his heroic act in saving so many precious young lives. His quick and automatic action is being talked about all over the world!" Trump tweeted.Seaman is a science teacher at the school, and multiple students on the scene say Seaman was the teacher who helped stop the shooter.His mother, Kristi, says her son was shot in the abdomen, the hip and the forearm, according to her Facebook page. She says Jason is out of surgery and is "doing well."According to his LinkedIn page, Seaman has been a science teacher at Noblesville schools since July 2014. He is also the head football coach for the seventh-grade team.A student who was in the classroom at the time of the incident credited the teacher with stopping the shooting from being worse than it was.Southern Illinois University football also tweeted about Seaman. Nicholas Benim survived in the woods alone for four days. Benim’s family said he got turned around while hunting in Oregon's Clackamas County Sunday night and separated from his hunting group.The hunter reunited with his family Wednesday afternoon at a ranger station in Estacada.The family says Benim is exhausted, with cuts on his hands and bad blisters on his feet. Besides that, he’s doing OK.“What a blessing, two hours ago they said they got him and we were so happy,” said father Daniel Benim.“Things could have gone either way, because we had no idea where he was,” said brother Bobby Benim.Daniel Benim said, “I’m a proud dad right now. He can barely talk right now, he’s tired, his feet are blistered.”Nick Benim was all smiles after a very lucky run-in with an off-duty U.S. Forest Service employee.“It was the first sign of human life he’d seen in ages, and all he was thinking was, ‘Oh my gosh, please stop and help me,’” said Bobby Benim.“Yep, it was just a tired wave,” said Mike Burri, the Forest Service worker who found Benim. “This guy looks tired, beat up, real wet, cuts on his hands, didn’t look in real good shape.”Burri said he was on his way to go hunting when he spotted Benim walking along Forest Service Road 4611, west of where Benim was separated from his group.“He said, ‘Hey, I’ve been lost for four days, can you take me into town?’” said Burri.Exhausted and hungry, Benim told Burri he got turned around while hunting Sunday night. He had to drink from the creek for days and make fires at night.“He had a Snickers bar for a while, over the past two days so he was pretty hungry,” said Burri.Burri said it’s remarkable how many miles Benim covered. Benim started near Hideaway Lake in Clackamas County. By the time he was found, after getting turned around multiple times, Burry thinks Benim covered up to 25 miles.“There’s no trails, that’s all wilderness,” said Burri.“Nick was prepared. He had a compass, he had a lighter, water bottle, little bit of food, he had a solar blanket. He was able to make fires at night,” said Bobby Benim.Benim is now back home with his wife and five young kids. His family wants to thank everyone who helped look for him. The Forest Service says this is another reminder to always be prepared when you head outdoors. 2297
