CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista’s Police Chief and a city councilman hosted a public safety meeting in a community where most would think safety isn’t an issue.  Chief Roxana Kennedy and Councilman John McCann met with several residents Wednesday night at the Montevalle Community Center.“I feel the balance is like this:  Housing, people, lights, traffic, less parking and police protection and presence are here,” said Chula Vista resident Dianne Farsetta while holding one hand up and one hand down. “It is a little scary.  We want to be in a safe environment.”Community groups on Facebook and Nextdoor appear to post more instances of crimes throughout the communities of Eastlake and Otay Ranch. Farsetta said the city is growing faster than its police force.However, Councilman McCann says the crime in his district is still less than half the crime level in other Chula Vista districts.  Additionally, McCann said Chula Vista is still one of the safest cities of its size in the country.  Nevertheless, McCann and Chief Kennedy listened to the community Wednesday night.“We want to make sure that we’re working with our police and our community to continue to make it as safe as it is,” he said.Farsetta and several others want to see more police on the streets and a police substation on the city’s eastern side.  Headquarters is on the western side of the city.McCann said the city’s immediate need is more officers on patrol.  He added he wants a substation but that the estimated million price tag is too much for Chula Vista. 1598

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A South Bay family who discovered the body of their loved one buried in a backyard in Tijuana tells 10News there's now an arrest warrant for that woman's stepson. Fernanda Gonzalez went missing in Tijuana on February 2nd. Her sister, Erika Gonzalez, tells 10News Tijuana authorities issued the warrant for 20-year-old Aaron Seth Juarez wanted in connection with his stepmom's murder. The family's attorney, Jesus Rodolfo Cruz, tells 10News Fernanda's Jeep Grand Cherokee is still missing. The Jeep has California plates that read 6VXP431. Gonzalez first reported her sister missing in early February and posted on social media asking for help finding her. Gonzalez tells 10News each post had thousands of shares before she got a phone call that changed the course of the search, "somebody call me and said to keep looking for my sister because she was already dead and in the back of her yard".RELATED: Woman discovers her sister's body buried in Tijuana backyardAfter getting two calls saying the same thing, Gonzalez and her father went to Fernanda's home in Tijuana and searched the backyard, eventually finding Fernanda's body buried. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of parents hosted a rally Monday evening calling on Chula Vista Elementary School District officials to reopen schools for in-person learning. Parents said they want the district to move forward with a phased reopening approach, a plan that was supposed to start on Oct. 26.However, the district halted the repoening plan at the beginning of October, citing concerns about rising COVID-19 cases in two specific ZIP codes -- 91911 and 92154.Parents argued that there is a safe way to go back to in-person learning, but they feel the district isn't ready. CVESD Superintendent Francisco Escobedo said he does want to get children back in the classroom and is hoping cases in those ZIP codes go down so they can reopen by the end of the year. He added that the district is still working with employee associations and labor groups in hopes of coming to an agreement so teachers can have everything they need to safely do their job. 976

(KGTV) — Eastlake Little League responded to media reports of controversy with fellow district youth baseball league, Park View, citing a recent "false" report by a local radio station.Eastlake told 10News that the league's officials had no part in putting together a protest against fellow District 42 league, Park View Little League, alleging residency and school enrollment violations.The timing of this protest comes as Park View seeks its third trip to the Little League World Series in nine years.RELATED: Chula Vista's Park View Little League crowned SoCal ChampsThe complaint, submitted by a group of Eastlake parents, surrounded Park View player residency and school enrollment requirements, according to a statement from Eastlake Little League treasurer Shane Stroberg."Eastlake Little League and the Board of Directors as a whole did not support, perform or pay for any information gathering regarding the Park View All Stars," Stroberg told 10News in a statement.In a separate statement, Little League International Director of Media Relations Kevin Fountain told 10News that Little League officials had "not found any reason to deem Park View Little League ineligible from the Little League International Tournament" following the complaint.He added that Park View had submitted additional documents to support residency and school enrollment requirements of its players: 1477

CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- Students in the south bay could get free lunches this June. The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Monday that its popular meal program is making a comeback. Called the “Seamless Summer Feeding Program,” free meals are being offered for most of June. According to the district, the free meals are available to anyone 18 and younger. The program runs from June 10 through June 28 Monday through Friday from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. The free lunches are being offered at Montgomery High School and Sweetwater Union High. According to the district, no registration is needed. “Just come and enjoy some great food,” a flyer from the district reads.
