SCRANTON, Pa. -- At Hank’s Hoagies, sandwiches are on order, along with a helping of politics.“A lot of political people around here,” said owner Tom Owens.That includes a life-size cutout of former Vice President Joe Biden, which makes more sense once you realize Hank’s Hoagies is located in his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania.He made an unscheduled stop there last October.“He’s a great guy,” Owens said. “When you meet him, it’s like you knew him all your life."This corner of Pennsylvania is part of the so-called Rust Belt. It’s a collection of states scattered around the Great Lakes – an area of former industrial powerhouses stretching from western New York, through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and into southeast Wisconsin.“There’s this whole string of connected states that share media markets, that share some common demographic factors and where small shifts in the vote can have big results in the Electoral College,” said Prof. Barry Burden, a political science professor and director of the Elections Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.He said both presidential campaigns will likely pay special attention to this area for one main reason.“There are a lot of people living here, which means there are a lot of electoral votes to be had,” Prof. Burden said. “Several of the states are really up for grabs in almost any presidential election.”That includes Pennsylvania, which holds 20 electoral votes and has a long history of being a swing state. Republicans won the state during presidential elections of the 1980s: 1980, 1984 and 1988. Then Democrats won it in the 1990s and 2000s: 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 – until Republicans won it once again in 2016.That’s not the only Rust Belt state that’s gone back and forth, so has Ohio, with 18 electoral votes.“I'm telling you, I kind of like what Trump's doing," said Ohio voter Charles Krumel. In Toledo, Ohio – months before election day, voters are already paying attention to the issues.“Most important thing is keeping the stock market up for us retired people, keeping social security for us retired people and keeping the economy going," said Alan Morse, another Ohio voter.Back in Scranton, Pennsylvania, there are similar concerns, but one trumps it all.“The coronavirus,” Owens said. “Just to get everybody on the same page in the country. (KGTV) - After seven years of planning and more than a year of construction, Mast Park in Santee is almost ready to reopen.The new park features all modern technology and brand new amenities, but planners wanted to make sure it kept its original feel of being surrounded by nature."If you think of Santee's parks along the river as a string of pearls, this one was the oldest and needed some polishing," says Bill Maertz, the City of Santee's Director of Community Services."We've kept the feel of the natural park," he adds. "So we have a brand new park here, but we've got 100-year-old trees here."The park's new features include three picnic shelters, a larger parking lot with electric car charging stations, three larger dog parks, a nature discovery play area, a forest-themed playground, a new basketball court, and an enhanced disc golf course.There are also more than 100 new trees planted throughout the 80-acre park, as well as native and drought-resistant landscaping."A portion of the park is part of the San Diego River Trail. So we wanted to keep that natural experience along the river," says Maertz.Multiple public meetings also showed that the community wanted to help kids build a connection to nature through the park."Children have a nature deficit disorder, there's too much time with screens, TVs and stuff," says Maertz. "So, we're trying to get them reconnected back to nature."The park will also have an active storm-water drainage system that runs through it like a river. Water runoff from nearby apartment complexes and businesses will filter through the park, with natural elements helping to clean it and block debris and trash from entering the San Diego River. The city built 12 bridges in the park to let people walk over the runoff areas like they're walking through a forest."The only reason we have 12 bridges is that we didn't have room for 13," jokes Maertz.The park will also have new bathrooms and a concession stand. It will sell burgers, drinks, and also dog treats and toys.City leaders hope to have a grand opening in February."We already have an amazing park system, and this just adds the frosting on the cake," says Maertz.For full details of the project, click here. 2239

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Bay Area police say two teens have admitted to starting a grass fire that scarred an iconic hillside amid a scorching heatwave and dangerous fire conditions. South San Francisco police said a brush fire spotted Friday around noon on “Sign Hill” grew quickly due to hot and windy conditions. Crews contained the fire hours later with no injuries and no structures lost but residents were temporarily displaced. Scientists have discovered a pocket sized dinosaur forerunner that was just 4 inches tall. Named Kongonaphon kely, which means tiny bug slayer, the creature looked like a dinosaur but scampered the Earth earlier, predating both dinosaurs and flying pterosaurs. The fossils, dug up in Madagascar, date from 237 million years ago, according to a study Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 429
