CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Video shows a frantic rescue effort in Chula Vista after a car went off Interstate 5, leaving two adults and a child trapped upside down. “We got a kid! We got a kid! Oh my god,” said Jay Corona, one of the good Samaritans who rushed to help when they spotted the overturned car near H Street around 10 a.m. Corona and his girlfriend Priscilla Valdovinos were on their way to a salon when they came across the wreck. “I was shocked, I was nervous, I was scared, all that,” said Valdovinos. "Somebody's in there. Somebody's in there."Smoke was rushing from the muffler so furiously Corona thought the car would explode. He saw the family hanging upside down by their seat belts and was able to save a mother and her young child. However, the front door of the sedan was stuck. “It wouldn't open. Because it was really jammed. I just kept pulling and pulling, and then the next thing I know I yanked it open,” Corona said. “I got it open and [the grandma] was in the front seat like, traumatized. She was like, 'Help me please, my back is hurting.'” RELATED: Good Samaritan recovering after getting hit by carValdovinos and Corona said the sedan hydroplaned in wet weather. With the help of other drivers, Corona escorted the grandmother back to the roadway. She was shaken up, but not seriously injured. Corona, who works as a security guard at a North Park bar, says his training kicked in. “I was very proud. He makes me proud every day! I fall in love with him every day, but today I told him, this is one that I'll remember,” said Valdovinos. The couple was struck by how many other people stopped to help. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista Elementary School District says families can now pick up both breakfast and lunch meals in one trip, the district announced Wednesday.CVESD is working with families to make the meal service more accessible and increase participation. Previously, the service was offered over to two different sessions for breakfast and lunch requiring families to make two trips.The hours are: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each day, the district said.Schools throughout the county are continuing to provide free meals to students in need amid the COVID-19 outbreak.CVESD is also extending the "grab-and-go" meal service at all nine school sites through spring break, March 23-27 and March 30 to April 3."Students who are receiving the meals must be physically present. (KGTV) - If a person suffers cardiac arrest inside a hospital, their chances of surviving are lower than you may think.According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the survival rate for adults is just 23%. The nonprofit attributes this low number to poor-quality CPR."So we need to do better in order to improve that number, our patients deserve better, our staff deserves better," said Sarah Saunders-Harbaugh, a clinical lead at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center.Saunders-Harbaugh is leading the hospital's effort to adopt the new AHA training method: RQI 2020, which stands for Resuscitation Quality Improvement. The simulation-based training provides verbal feedback in real-time while staff members do compressions and ventilations. Previously staff was only required to get re-certified every two years. With RQI 2020 staff will train every three months, but only for about 15 minutes each time."So 'we're constantly building muscle memory, and we have the opportunity to get better while we're using this equipment and then we have the opportunity to save more lives in the hospital," said Saunders-Harbaugh.A Texas hospital using this training method increased its survival rate by 21%, doubling the previous rate.Sharp Chula Vista is the first hospital in the county to implement RQI 2020, and the AHA hopes to have it in every hospital by 2025. 1389

CHULA VISTA (KGTV)-- It was back to school--virtually--for the Sweetwater Union High School District. They are the first school district in the county to start the year.Some parents said the one issue they ran into was technical problems. Gina Chavez, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said two of her three kids dealt with issues getting started. She said day one was "crazy."“My daughter started the day without an advisory class and no code for her science class,” Chavez said.Her other daughter couldn’t log onto her iPad, issued by the school district. “We had to scramble. I got my work computer, was able to log her on that way. [I] had to do a trouble ticket.”Two of her children have special needs and are on IEPs, individualized education programs. There still some question about how that will be handled in a remote environment.“I still haven’t heard anything as far as how they are going to specifically address his goals. I’m still waiting and if I don’t hear by the end of the week, I will be reaching out to figure that out,” Chavez said.A district spokesperson said roughly 9,400 devices were distributed last week. The majority of students were able to hold on to their devices from last year.Regarding technical problems, spokesperson Manny Rubio acknowledged the issues, but said the “issues are being resolve fairly quickly.”“It seems as though the great majority of students were logged in and had access to their classes,” Rubio wrote in an email to ABC 10News. “We do have our IT staff as well as school site staff available to answer questions and resolve issues.”Under the distance learning model, students are block schedules with three classes per day. There will be 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with the student’s teacher. The remaining time will be independent study, according to the plan released by the district.“I feel like I was torn in three different directions this morning trying to help every child get where they needed to be,” Chavez said. “If I had work today… I think I would have been in tears.”Chavez said she hopes the glitches get resolved by the end of the week.The Sweetwater Union High School District is facing many challenges, including a roughly million budget shortfall.An audit of the district conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) showed there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. 2491

(KGTV) – Police are investigating the death of a woman whose nude body was found in the middle of a Chula Vista street early Thursday morning.At around 12:30 a.m., a person called 911 to report a naked woman lying face down in the middle of the 200 block of Shasta Street, near Second Avenue.Responding police officers checked the woman and found she was not breathing and had no pulse.Despite CPR attempts, the woman -- described as Hispanic, in her 20s, and a Chula Vista resident -- was declared dead at the scene.Police told ABC 10News there was no immediate indication the woman was struck by a vehicle. On Friday, police identified the victim as 33-year-old Laura Rodriguez.Chula Vista police Lt. Dan Peak said, "It's very suspicious at this time. The manner of death is unknown. At this time, we don't know why this person was here and why they were left here in the roadway."Officers are questioning neighborhood residents as part of their investigation."It's a bit of a shock. This is a very quiet neighborhood ... About 20 minutes before she was found, I heard a vehicle revving up its engine and going around the corner," said neighbor Roger Murray.The Chula Vista Police Department is trying to locate witnesses or anyone with information regarding Rodriguez's death.
