AURORA, Colo. – The Aurora City Council unanimously adopted a resolution Monday, calling for an independent investigation into Elijah McClain’s death.The resolution calls for a three-member independent investigation team that will have at least three consultants and will be led by Jonathan Smith of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs in Washington, D.C.The team will include consultants who have expertise in independent investigations, law enforcement and public safety accountability, civil rights, use of force, police and EMT training and criminal justice.The city council’s Public Safety, Courts and Civil Service Committee had said just last week they were still working to find a medical expert who can speak to the use of ketamine on McClain and at least one other person.The team of investigators, once formed, will “commence its work immediately and shall complete its investigation as expeditiously as possible,” according to language included in the resolution.The team would then issue a written report to the city council, present its findings to the council in a public meeting, and make the report public. The report will include recommendations to the city on the McClain incident as well as future best practices the police, fire and EMT departments should implement.McClain, 23, was unarmed when he was encountered by Aurora police on Aug. 24, 2019. Police put McClain in a carotid hold, which limits blood flow to the brain, after stopping him while he was walking home. When he became unresponsive, paramedics gave him ketamine, police have said.The officers involved in McClain's death were not arrested or charged, despite continued calls for justice from McClain's family and supporters, along with calls for an independent investigation.Aurora city leaders in June said a Connecticut attorney was leading a third-party investigation into the McClain incident. But city councilmembers Alison Hiltz, Curtis Gardener, and Angela Lawson argued that the attorney, a former police officer who has worked closely with police departments, could not provide an independent review. The city cut ties with the attorney before moving forward with the current investigation.In June, as McClain's death garnered national interest, Gov. Jared Polis appointed Attorney General Phil Weiser to investigate the officers' actions. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday that Home Depot is sending 45 tractor-trailers containing disaster-relief supplies to Florida communities impacted by Hurricane Irma and pledging even more supplies before the end of the week.Millions of Floridians are still without power and thousands more have been displaced by flooding or storm damage.Bondi said the Home Depot trucks are carrying cases of water, plywood, generators and electrical cords, among other items.The supplies, headed to South Florida, will be sold at normal prices.Bondi's office said the home building company is shipping additional supplies in the coming days with more than a million bottles of water expected by the end of the week.The state said Home Depot will sell the water for .97 a case.Florida’s Price Gouging Hotline remains open during this emergency declaration covering all 67 counties.  914

ATLANTA - In a memo this week, Delta Airlines’ CEO told staff nearly 700 passengers have been placed on the no-fly list in 2020 for refusing to comply with policies requiring masks on planes.This is a sharp increase from the 460 banned passengers the airline reported in October. T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, agreed to a civil settlement with the SEC that was announced Friday. He's paying a ,000 fine and agreeing not to sell or market similar securities for at least five years. A representative for T.I. did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Monday. As Thanksgiving nears, 74 more cases of salmonella, including 1 death, have been linked to raw turkey products, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The CDC announced the outbreak in July, but more people have gotten sick, bringing the total to 164 in 35 states. One person in California has died, and 63 people have been hospitalized.The outbreak started in November 2017. It's unclear where the turkey at the center of this outbreak came from, as there doesn't appear to be one centralized distributor, the agency said. This could mean that "it might be widespread in the turkey industry."Lab tests show that the salmonella came from a variety of products, including ground turkey and turkey patties.
