VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - Prosecutors announced Friday they will seek a second trial against ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II, who was convicted of forcible rape and misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure and lewd conduct earlier this week. Following about a week of deliberations, a Vista jury found Winslow guilty of raping a woman in Encinitas and exposing himself to two others, but deadlocked on eight other charges, including rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women. Jurors indicated that they were leaning toward guilty verdicts on each count, but were unable to reach a consensus, leading San Diego Superior Court Judge Blaine Bowman to declare a mistrial as to those counts Tuesday morning, and dismiss the jury. Prosecutors stated they will go forward with trying Winslow a second time. A judge set the trial date for Sept. 30 and denied bail, saying Winslow was a danger to the community.Winslow was convicted of last May's rape of a 58-year-old homeless woman -- Jane Doe 2 -- exposing himself to Jane Doe 3, who was gardening in her front yard in Cardiff last May, and touching himself in front of a 77-year-old woman -- Jane Doe 5 -- at a Carlsbad gym in February. (KGTV) — Firefighters made short work of a fire that tore through a Vista home and set nearby vegetation ablaze Saturday evening.Vista Fire Department responded to reports of a fire in the area of Robelini Drive and El Valle Opulento just before 7 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find a brush fire extending into a home at 110 El Valle Opulento.As firefighters battled back the brush fire, other fire crews tackled flames shooting our of the home. Firefighters say that because of the "rapidly deteriorating conditions inside the home," crews were forced to get out of the home and fire the fire from outside.The fire was fully extinguished within about an hour, VFD said. One person was displaced from the home. No injuries were reported. It's not clear how the fire began. The fire is currently under investigation.Firefighters reminded homeowners to have working smoke alarms in their home and clear vegetation away from any structure. 957

WASHINGTON — The Senate returns to Washington as all eyes are on Republican Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Chuck Grassley of Iowa for clues to whether they will support any effort to approve a Supreme Court justice before November's election. President Donald Trump and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are moving quickly to set up a nominee, confirmation hearings and a vote to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Democrats oppose a Trump appointment so close to an election. Trump's Democratic rival, Joe Biden, is urging other Republican senators to join Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine in opposing a confirmation vote before the race is decided.In an interview on Monday, Trump said he thought that both Murkowski and Collins would be "badly hurt" for choosing not to vote for a Supreme Court justice nominee.The Republican caucus currently holds a 53-47 voting edge in the Senate. With Murkowski and Collins promising not to confirm, the GOP can only afford to lose two more Senate votes and still confirm a Supreme Court justice.
