BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika here on Wednesday, and called for setting up formal mechanism to guide and coordinate bilateral trade cooperation.     Wen told Mutharika that to enhance China-Malawi friendly cooperative ties was in the fundamental interests of both sides, adding China was ready to expand substantial cooperation with Malawi.     The premier called on both countries to confer on setting up a guidance and coordination mechanism for trade cooperation. China would encourage its enterprises to increase imports from Malawi in a bid to stimulate bilateral trade and promote its balanced development. TAIYUAN -- Fifteen miners have been confirmed dead following Saturday's gas explosion in a coal mine in Linfen City, north China's Shanxi Province, rescuers said on Sunday. Rescue operation is still going on. The gas blast occurred around 1:50 p.m. on Saturday at Pudeng Coal Mine in Kecheng Township of Puxian County. About 30 miners were trapped underground, according to preliminary estimates. "The exact number of miners trapped underground is yet to be affirmed," said a spokesman for Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Coal Mine Safety Supervision. The cause of the gas explosion is being investigated. Pudeng Coal Mine, which is in operation with permits, produces 150,000 tons of coal a year. Zhao Tiechui, director of the State Administration for Coal Mine Safety Supervision, together with local officials have rushed to the accident site to direct rescue efforts.

The country's fast-developing tourism industry is expected to boost the hotel sector, a senior official has said.About 200,000 new hotels, resorts and guesthouses are likely to be built by 2015, head of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) Shao Qiwei said on Thursday.Addressing a seminar on domestic and international hotels' groups, he said the new structures will include about 10,000 star-rated hotels. The number of five-star hotels in the country is expected to rise from 361 to 500."The World Tourism Organization has forecast that China will grow into a huge tourism market, and have 100 million each of inbound and outbound visitors and 2.8 billion domestic tourists by 2015," he said.The booming tourism market has created the need for new hotels and other infrastructure facilities, he said.The Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts plan to open five new facilities in the country this year, and at least 13 more in big cities such Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an in the near future, the general manager of Traders Hotel at China World Trade Center in Beijing, Xin Tao, said.In fact, the group plans to open at least 40 new hotels in the country by 2011."The Olympic Games has brought us unlimited business opportunities and the increase of leisure, as well as business, travel in China will add to the appeal of hotel operators," she said.Investment from home and abroad into hotels will hit 340 billion yuan (.14 billion) between 2006 and 2010, the CNTA has forecast.The hotel sector was one of the first to be opened up in China, with Jianguo Hotel in Beijing being the first foreign-invested hotel to be approved by the State Council in 1979.Since then, 67 hotel brands of 41 international groups have entered the country and are managing 516 hotels at present, according to CNTA statistics.The hotel business has been expanding over the past three decades, and by the end of last year there were more than 14,000 star-rated hotels, 100 times more than in 1978.

SHANGHAI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- A traditional commodity fair in east China, conventionally regarded as a barometer of the nation's foreign trade, reported less demands from American businessmen than expected, indicating a possible slowdown of Sino-U.S. trade.     The 18th East China Commodity Fair, an event held at the beginning of every year, reported around 1,600 American businessmen, far less than expected.     "The number of the American businessmen to the fair was only two thirds of those from the European Union, showing the deficient domestic demands of the United States," said Wang Qingjiang, an official with the fair.     "The subprime crisis in the United States has shown its influence on China's exports," he added.     The 5-day fair registered total business deals worth 583 million U.S. dollars between Chinese companies and the U.S. businessmen, a 1.5 percent dip from last year.     Deals worth more than 3.67 billion U.S. dollars were signed at the fair, a 3.52 percent growth from 2007.     Deals between Chinese companies and the European Union businessmen added up to 879 million U.S. dollars, a 9.5 percent growth compared with the last fair.     Chinese companies and the Japanese businessmen made deals worth906 million U.S. dollars, almost the same amount compared with last year.     The fair attracted more than 19,000 businessmen from 145 countries and regions around the world, with more than 60 percent from Asia.     According to experts, the fair could indicate the trend in China's foreign trade in 2008.

GUANGZHOU: The Guangdong People's Procuratorate on Thursday called on the public to continue to help it identify and prosecute government officials found to be guilty of dereliction of duty. Figures show that of the 2,200 such cases reported by the public since 2005, 738 people in 678 cases were subsequently prosecuted. Of those, 65 were county-level officials, with five holding more senior positions. Since the beginning of 2006, the procuratorate has rewarded 23 people for providing information on such cases, Huang Liming, director of the anti-dereliction of duty division of the provincial procuratorate, said. Also on Thursday, the provincial disciplinary watchdog disclosed details of four its most serious cases. In one, two police officials in Huazhou, Guangdong, were charged with torturing to death Huang Weiqing in November 2002, who had earlier been arrested for being a grifter. A court heard how police officer Huang Weiguang, who had been drinking alcohol prior to interrogating the suspect, repeatedly beat the man about the head, chest, back and legs until he lost consciousness, in a bid to extract a confession. Huang Weiqing later died of his injuries on November 14. A second police officer, Li Hanyu, was found guilty of failing to intervene; he instead simply left the room. Almost 40 police officers from the station unanimously testified that the suspect had killed himself by hitting his head on a table while being questioned. However, the dead man's family continued to appeal to government departments for justice. The provincial procuratorate eventually set up a special team and after a two-month investigation reached its decision on the police officers involved. Huang was sentenced to life imprisonment, while Li got two years for dereliction of duty. A number of other police officers were also punished. In another case, Fu Zuoqing, the former president of the Qingyuan Intermediate People's Court, received 11 years' imprisonment for misuse of power, bribery and embezzlement.
