VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Sunday encouraged Chinese and Russian youths to make joint efforts in helping push forward the friendly bilateral ties.Xi, during his visit to the Confucius Institute of Far Eastern National University here, called on youths of the two countries to realize the aim with their youthful passion and wisdom.At the institute, which was founded in 2006, Xi watched an exhibition showing its achievement, attended a Chinese calligraphy lesson taken by Russian students, and inaugurated a bronze statue of Confucius.Xi also paid a visit to the "Ocean" all Russia children's center, where hundreds of Chinese pupils and middle-school students, victims of a devastating major earthquake in 2008, had attended a rehabilitation program.The massive earthquake struck southwestern China's Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces on May 12, 2008, leaving some 70,000 people dead and 18,000 others missing.Xi recalled that the Russian government and people provided timely assistance to victims of the quake and President Dmitry Medvedev later invited more than 1,500 Chinese pupils and middle-school students from the quake-hit areas to Russia for rehabilitation.The Chinese vice president conveyed the sincere greetings and best wishes of these Chinese children to their Russian peers in the center, and, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the staff of the center.Xi said Chinese and Russian youths are the builders and successors of the future undertaking of the Sino-Russia friendship.He said the "Year of Chinese Language" would open in Russia in several days, expressing his hope that Russian youths would actively take part in related activities, and learn Chinese language, history and culture.Xi arrived in Vladivostok Saturday for a five-day official visit to Russia.

HAIKOU, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Government plans to make China's southern island province of Hainan an international tourist resort have cut the supply of housing as owners and developers hold out for huge profits.More than 200 property buyers had arrived everyday since the end of last year when the government unveiled plans to turn the tropical island into a top international destination by 2020, said Li Zhuo, a salesman with Rongyu Project in Haikou, the provincial capital.Prices were rising by about 1,000 yuan (164 U.S. dollars) per square meter each day on some properties and properties that had been selling for 15,000 yuan a square meter at the beginning of the year were now asking20,000 yuan, he said.The Shanhuwan real estate project in Haikou had sold 600 of its 643 apartments in two weeks despite prices jumping almost 50 percent, said salesgirl Min Xia.In the popular tourist destination of Sanya, the average price of Shanyuhu project had soared from 13,000 yuan a square meter in November, to 28,000 yuan as of Thursday, and was almost sold out.The tourism promotion blueprint, which was officially announced on Jan. 4 and is expected to be approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, drew real estate developers and investors from home and abroad, driving up the property market to fever and causing property bubble fears."Many home developers and owners suspended sales, expecting higher prices and profits," said Liu Haiyi, assistant general manager of Hainan Jintai Real Estate Development Co., Ltd.In an effort to clamp down on potential speculation, the provincial government on Jan. 15 suspended the leasing of land and approval of projects, which worsened speculation concerns.The suspension was aimed at cooling the overheated sector, but it may have led to a second wave of price hikes, said a property agent surnamed Wu."Sufficient housing and land resources could be provided to fulfill demands of the market and the tourism promotional campaign," Wei Liucheng, secretary of Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, said Tuesday."We will blacklist real estate developers who seriously disturb the property market order and not approve any new land for them," he said.Official statistics show 58,489 commercial homes, totaling almost 6 million square meters, were on the market in Hainan's major cities as of Monday.In the first half of 2009, Hainan had approved development of 3,164.7 hectares of land, including 1,522.65 hectares already under construction, according to the provincial administration of land, environment and resources.Wei said homes for local residents were a priority. The authorities should conduct comprehensive supervision campaigns and work out plans for land approval for residential purposes. BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Han Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai, confirmed here Sunday he would lead a delegation to visit Taiwan in April to promote the upcoming World Expo.The confirmation by Han himself came on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's supreme legislature."I have been expecting for long to visit the Treasure Island of Taiwan," Han said. "Though the exact date has yet to be decided, I hope to make it early April."The mayor said he would take his Taiwan visit as a chance not only to promote the World Expo, which is slated to open on May 1, but to further boost Shanghai's economic and cultural exchanges with Taiwan.Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin led a delegation to visit Shanghai in June 2008, drawing attention from the media for the improvement of cross-Strait relations between Taiwan and the mainland.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 40-member Chinese medical care and epidemic prevention team left here for Haiti on Sunday afternoon on a chartered flight, which also carried 20 tonnes of medical supplies, said the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).The MOC said earlier in the day that China had decided to provide medical supplies worth 18 million yuan (2.64 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to quake-ravaged Haiti.The 20-tonne medical supplies included medicines, hygiene equipment, medical devices and camping equipment, said the ministry in a statement.Also onboard the plane would be four Chinese peace-keeping police officers, replacing the four who were killed in the earthquake. KUNMING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called for more efforts to fight Yunnan's worst drought in 60 years when visiting the province in southwestern China.He urged local authorities to ensure water supply for urban and rural residents and for agricultural uses.He also asked local authorities to take more measures to limit the spread of forest fires.Hui visited several rural households to know if they had enough water. He also inspected affected crops, reservoirs and forests during his visit to Yunnan from Wednesday to Friday.Yunnan's drought has resulted in water shortages for locals, livestock and crops.The dry spell started in the autumn 2009 and has also hit neighboring Guizhou Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.The seriousness, duration, areas affected and losses are rarely seen in history, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said late Friday in a statement on its website.The ministry urged all affected regions to "take all possible means" to minimize the damages of the drought.The ministry also asked local civil affairs authorities of the four hardest-hit regions to report, on a 10-day basis, the number of people affected by the drought, people suffering from drinking water shortage, and people in need of government aid.
