BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's President John Evans Atta Mills arrived in Beijing on Sunday evening, kicking off his state visit to China.During his six-day China trip, Mills will hold talks or meet with Chinese leaders including President Hu Jintao and top legislator Wu Bangguo.Besides Beijing, he will visit southwest China's Chongqing municipality, southern city of Shenzhen and the nation's economic hub Shanghai.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai municipal government issued new rules Thursday limiting families to one new apartment purchase, as the nation tries to curb property speculation and soaring prices."One family in Shanghai, whether local or immigrant, can only buy one new home, including a second-hand one, for the time being," said a circular released by the municipal government.The new rule came into effect Thursday. The Chinese capital, Beijing, introduced the same measure on April 30.Shanghai authorities also ordered banks to suspend loans for third-home buyers and non-local buyers who could not prove they had paid personal income taxes or made social security contributions in the city for at least one year, the circular said.Local authorities would also start preparing for the introduction of a property tax, it said, without providing further details.A land-appreciation tax of 5 percent on the selling price would also be imposed on property developers if they sold residential buildings at an average price that was more than twice the average price of the previous year in the same area.Shanghai's new rules follow a series of measures announced by the Chinese central government in late September to check soaring property prices.The measures included the suspension of bank loans for third-home purchases in the near future and an adjustment in down payments for all home buyers.All home buyers will have to pay a down payment of at least 30 percent of the purchase price, according to the new rules.Previously, according to rules issued on April 17, only first-time buyers purchasing an apartment covering more than 90-square-meters had to pay a 30 percent down payment.On the same day, sources within several departments of the central government told Xinhua that property tax pilot programs will be stepped up and then extended across the entire country.

BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with its neighboring countries to further deepen their mutual understanding and friendship, a senior Chinese diplomat said Thursday.Hu Zhengyue, Chinese assistant foreign minister, said China supports social and cultural exchanges between different countries on the basis of respecting each other's tradition, social system and developing mode.The recent years have seen dynamic exchanges between China and its neighboring countries and their cooperation has been broadened and enriched, Hu said in a Foreign Ministry media release."In 2009 alone, there are about 21.7 million visitors coming from northeast, southeast and south Asian countries," he said."Besides, more than 160,000 foreign students studying in China in 2009 were from Asian countries," he added.China attaches great importance to enhancing communication and exchanges between young people of Asian countries, and has established young people's regular exchanging mechanism with Japan, India, Vietnam, Mongolia and Pakistan, he said.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on Saturday, a record number since the Expo opened. The total number also exceeded an earlier record.The Expo had received some 64.62 million visitors by the end of Saturday, the 169th day since the event began on May 1. The previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which about 64 million people attended over a six month period.Attendance may be increasing since this is the first weekend after the week-long National Day holiday and the second to last weekend before the final seven designated days from Oct. 25-31.Since early this morning, the Expo' s public transportation system has been under great pressure as visitors have been seen throughout the Expo site.Visitors needed to queue up for more than one hour before being admitted to most pavilions. Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". But Zhou said she had been prepared for the situation as they visited seven pavilions, including the Egyptian and Spanish pavilions.A visitor surnamed Zhang and her daughter, a high school student in Shanghai, entered the site at 11 a.m. but had only visited three pavilions by 6:30 p.m."And all of them are small ones. TIANJIN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Executives from China's auto makers Sunday rejected an official warning that unchecked growth in the industry was leading to excess capacity and could harm the wider economy.Chen Bin, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, Saturday said excess auto capacity threatened sustainable economic development and must be "resolutely" stopped.But industry representatives and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) Sunday argued car makers were only trying to meet expected demand in the world's largest auto market.Dongfeng Automobile, a major Chinese auto manufacturer, had been running in top gear since last year, said Fan Zhong, a senior manager. "Our problem is not having enough capacity."Most entrepreneurs at the International Forum on Chinese Automobile Industry Development in Tianjin had similar views.Ford China was focusing on expanding capacity as demand kept rising, said CEO Robert Graziano.The overall capacity of China's auto industry might seem excessive, but the market had huge potential for restructuring and growth, said Hu Xinmin, honorary chairman of the CAAM.
