SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former Torrey Pines High School student who posted threats targeting the school on his Instagram account was sentenced Friday to a year in custody, with at least six months to be served at a residential alcohol and mental health treatment facility.Kevin Matlak, 21, pleaded guilty last month to one count of making a criminal threat.Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon placed Matlak on five years probation and ordered him to stay away from Torrey Pines High and have no contact with three people named in a criminal complaint.RELATED: Former Torrey Pines student faces judge in online threats caseDefense attorney Brian Watkins said Matlak didn't threaten anyone directly, but three former classmates -- whom the defendant didn't know -- read his posts on Instagram and felt threatened by them.The classmates of Matlak's who graduated in 2015 reported the threats to law enforcement on May 30, leading to his arrest."I hate all of you," Matlak wrote in one post, according to Deputy District Attorney Matthew Greco.RELATED: Former Torrey Pines High School student seeking psychiatric help after online threat"Get the (expletive) out of San Diego 2K18 before I find u," the defendant wrote in another post. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fans at the Holiday Bowl between No. 19 Iowa and No. 22 Southern California will be asked to do the “Iowa Wave” directed at patients in a children’s hospital in Iowa City as well as representatives from two children’s hospitals in Southern California who will be at the game on Dec. 27.The wave will replicate what has become a game-day salute at Hawkeyes home games to patients and family members at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.The salute started on Sept. 2, 2017, when more than 70,000 fans stood at the end of the first quarter and waved to patients and families in the children’s hospital, which rises above Kinnick Stadium. The patients and families waved back. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 27-year-old man suffered non-life threatening knife wounds to his back and abdomen when he was attacked by an assailant this morning in the Logan Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The victim was walking across a pedestrian bridge in the 2000 block of Kearny Avenue a little after 1:05 a.m. when the suspect walked up behind him and stabbed him in the back and abdomen, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department."The victim thought it was a punch until he felt blood and realized he was stabbed,'' Heims said. "The victim ran across the street and it is unknown where the suspect went.
