The county may something a little extra for your wallet.The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office says they currently have 3,000 in unclaimed county refunds waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners.About 1,928 refunds sit on the countywide unclaimed money and unclaimed property tax refunds lists, according to the office. If the county thinks you're owed a refund, you may receive a postcard in the mail, according to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister.“Most of the time, we’re collecting money from San Diegans,” said McAllister. “We love summer when we can give it back and put a little extra vacation cash in people’s pockets. I feel like Robin Hood.”Over the last five years, the office says it has refunded nearly 0,000 to residents.According to the county, the smallest refund amount available is and the largest refund amount is ,333.79, owed to the heirs of Mary Stone. "In the past, sadly, most refunds were never claimed," McAllister said. "So we’re trying a new strategy to let people know about this money. For the first time, we’re mailing 2,407 postcards to people who may be owed a refund, encouraging them to file a claim through our website."Residents can also check online to see if they're eligible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hate crime charges were filed against two men accused of assaulting a Black journalist who was covering a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Imperial Beach in June.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced felony assault and battery charges, and hate crime allegations, were filed against 38-year-old Jeffrey Brooks and 32-year-old Henry Brooks Jr. in connection with the June 7 incident at a beach near Veterans Park.Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.RELATED: Man says he was sucker punched at Imperial Beach protestThe DA’s Office alleged Brooks and Brooks Jr. were at the peaceful march in Imperial Beach when they began “verbally and physically antagonizing the protesters.”At one point, Brooks Jr. allegedly threw eggs at a group of protesters.“While recording the scene, the victim was sucker punched in the head by Jeffrey Brooks, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground,” the DA’s Office said in a news release.If convicted of all charges, Brooks faces three years in custody; Brooks Jr. faces six years.District Attorney Summer Stephan said, “Protecting our community from hate crimes is a priority for my office because hate erodes our right to equality and fairness, and it leaves an impact on the victim and everyone who shares the victim’s race. We will not tolerate the intimidation or violent interference with protesters or a journalist who are exercising their First Amendment rights.” 1492

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Frustrated business owners in the Midway District say an old strip club was a better neighbor than the current property owner, which happens to be a church. The Rock Church bought the strip club, formerly known as The Body Shop, in August of 2018. Now, businesses say nothing has changed except there’s now more trash and drugs. Neighbors say they want the church to clean it up. Noor Shamoon comes to work at Navis Pack and Shop to a very unwelcome sight. “Food, trash feces on wall, on our vehicles.”He says it’s a foul odor and claims people who hang out in the area vandalized the businesses work truck. Employees at the Midas muffler business across the street also say trash and loitering have become huge problems. “We're trying to run a business and it's hard when you have that across the street,” said Gary Stricker. People who work in the area say prostitution is rampant as are drugs. One man reportedly overdosed recently. “I think he maybe shot up some kind of drug or something. We were concerned about him so we called an ambulance,” Stricker said. When The Rock Church dropped the banner over the “nude girls” sign at the former strip club, they promised to clean up the neighborhood. Since the church purchased the property for .3 million, they haven’t touched it. "I hope they do something about that to clean the place up you know,” Stricker said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving under the influence arrests have dropped noticeably in cities where ride sharing programs have expanded, a new study says.An analysis performed by Moll Law Group and the University of California says DUI arrests in San Diego dropped 32% from 2015 to 2016.The study also looked at four other major cities with declines in California: 28% in San Jose, 26% in Sacramento, 14% for Los Angeles and the San Francisco-Oakland area.“We still seeing quite a few impaired people, they’re just not sitting in the front seat,” said Mark McCullough with San Diego Police Department’s traffic division.McCullough says the declining trend began a few a years ago when more new forms of transportation became available.“Five years ago we’d run a DUI checkpoint on a Friday night and we’d arrest 20 people and up,” said McCullough, “now on any given Friday if we arrest 10-15 people that’s a busy night for us.”Experts believe there may be other reasons behind the figures declining, but it’s still a number they don’t mind going down.“You’re not using your brain to your full potential if you get arrested for a DUI,” said McCullough, “there are just so many forms of alternative transportation.” 1225
