Anael Sanchez is walking over the rubble of what used to be his home in Phoenix, Oregon."It was crazy," Sanchez said.He lost his home in the wind-driven Almeda fire which tore through four towns in the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon.“It was so thick, the smoke. You could hardly see far away," Sanchez described.Two of the towns, Phoenix and Talent, are home to a large Latinx immigrant population. Sanchez is originally from Mexico but has lived in the area for more than two decades. Since he lost his home, he says many local grocery stores, organizations and the Red Cross have helped him with basic needs.“Clothes, gift cards, a little bit of cash,” Sanchez said.One organization helping is Unete, a nonprofit organization that supports farmworkers and immigrants in southern Oregon and across the nation.“The extra challenge that the immigrant and the farmworker has is the income,” said Dago Berto Morales, director at Unete.According to Morales, the immigrant community in the area was already facing large disparities and an affordable housing crisis. The fire made it worse.“We’re asking the government or local communities to try to find a solution for the housing crisis,” Morales said.With wildfires raging throughout the western U.S., the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is providing rental assistance, home repair, low-cost loans and other programs for eligible residents. As a legal U.S. citizen, Sanchez could apply. But he says he won’t, knowing many of his friends and neighbors are undocumented.“In this park over there, there might be a bunch of immigrants. They’re not legal, maybe. And if they’re not legal, they’re not going to get help,” Sanchez said.To protect his identity as an undocumented immigrant, another man who lost his home has asked that we not share his name. APATUL VALLEY (CNS) - Firefighters battling the Valley Fire in rural eastern San Diego County worked to take advantage of lighter winds and higher humidity this morning in an attempt to increase containment of the blaze.The fire, southeast of Alpine, has burned 17,665 acres, destroyed 30 residences and 31 outbuildings, damaged 11 other structures, injured three firefighters and was 79% contained.At noon Friday, Cal Fire announced that all evacuations and road closures necessitated by the conflagration, dubbed the Valley Fire, had been lifted.However, Cleveland National Forest remained closed to the public until further notice ``to protect natural resources and provide for the safety of the public and firefighters,'' Cal Fire advised.``This closure will stay in place until conditions improve and we are confident that national forest visitors can recreate safely,'' according to the state agency.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons early Sept. 5 off Spirit Trail and Carveacre Road and spread rapidly through tinder-dry vegetation amid sweltering heat and high winds, Cal Fire officials said.Cal Fire cautioned those returning to the fire-ravaged area Friday to ``use extreme caution around trees, power poles and other tall objects or structures that may have been weakened'' by the blaze.The San Diego County Sheriff's Department will increased its patrols in the area to ensure public safety and prevent looting, according to Cal Fire.Officials advised that motorists in the area may face traffic disruptions due to the continued presence of firefighters, law enforcement personnel and utility workers still working there.Non-residents were asked to avoid locales in and around the burn zone if possible.About 140 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in Alpine, Barrett Lake, Dehesa, Lyons Valley and Rancho Palo Verde were without power. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey announced during a news conference Wednesday that local governments now have the ability, if they so choose, to mandate masks in their cities.The move comes as healthcare workers and many city leaders across the state called for the governor to make it a statewide requirement to wear masks in public to prevent the spread of coronavirus.Ducey said during the press conference that the amount of positive cases and the percentage of positive cases per test varies greatly by city and county across the state. Therefore, he says he is choosing to leave it up to local governments whether or not to mandate masks.Ducey did not clarify how exactly each local government could implement a mandate on masks, but Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego tweeted that the Phoenix City Council would vote on a mandate on the upcoming agenda.When asked about how the use of masks would be enforced, Ducey said that would be left up to the mayors to decide.Ducey also announced during the press conference that 300 National Guard members will be called upon to help with contact tracing across the state.A spokesman for the governor has said, "addressing COVID-19 remains our highest priority.
