(KGTV) - Some COVID-inspired creativity from local youth is about to take center stage.Leo Nava, 12, has been drawing since he was six."I love drawing, and it calms me down," said Nava.It's a calm he appreciates amid the unknowns of the pandemic."Sometimes it helps me tell what I'm feeling ... It helps me ignore my surroundings about what's going on in the world, so I don't get as frustrated or stressed," said Nava. He and dozens others have been tapping their pandemic-inspired creativity through online classes at the nonprofit, A Reason To Survive, a creative development program for under-served youth in the South Bay. The voices of the youth are spoken through poignant photographs and original songs, some speaking the isolation so many are feeling. Some youth, like Nava, are drawn to drawings. Themes include superhero medical workers, toilet paper hoarding, beaches and that claustrophobic quarantine feeling.One piece one by Nava shows a red-eyed Nava typing at a computer all day. In another example, Nava sketched a comic strip panel showing an apocalypse."The asteroid hitting the earth represents quarantine. People are scared. Don't know where it came from or what it's doing," said Nava.Those feelings of fear, say the student's teachers, are mixed with anxiety, isolation, hope, joy and heroism — all part of their pandemic experience.The creativity will shine in a virtual exhibition Saturday."The artwork says, 'Hear me. Listen to me. See me.' Their, voice, viewpoints and identity are the things that leap off the page and the music ... We need to be responsive to what they're telling us," said James Halliday, Executive Director of A Reason To Survive (ARTS). 1716

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) have arrested a 21-year-old man suspected of killing a nurse on a local highway as she drove to work earlier this month.Caitlyn Kaufman, 26, was shot and killed on Interstate 440 on Dec. 3 as she drove to her job at St. Thomas West Hospital. Her death shocked the city of Nashville and garnered national attention.On Friday morning, MNPD Chief John Drake announced that SWAT members took 21-year-old Devaunte L. Hill into custody earlier in the day without incident at Hill's East Nashville apartment. Hill has been charged with criminal homicide. Police said Hill and Kaufman did not know each other prior to the shooting. 710

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — AT&T said crews have made significant progress restoring service to the region on Sunday morning following an explosion on Friday morning outside an AT&T data center.The explosion impacted widespread service interruption reaching outside of just Middle Tennessee. On Sunday morning, the company said power has been restored to four floors of the building and more than 65% of mobile sites affected by the explosion have been restored. More than three feet of water was pumped out of the building's basement on Saturday, however, access to some of the lowers is still limited. AT&T said on Sunday crews will be adding additional cabling and more generators to provide more power into the building to help with restoration efforts."Teams are working to safely bring additional equipment online and reroute services through other facilities in the region. While mobility services have been restored in many areas, we still have more than 17 portable cell sites on the air to aid in communication, including for restoration teams and first responders," AT&T said in an update. "We are bringing in additional resources to support the recovery of wireline voice and data services and expect to have a fleet of 24 additional trailers of disaster recovery equipment on-site by the end of the day."The company did not provide an exact time when it expects service to fully be restored. MOUNDS, Okla. — Logan Phillips said he was inspired during the teacher walkout and signed up to run for Oklahoma's House District 24 seat on a whim.Phillips figured he would lose, but began legwork for a campaign in 2020. His opponent was 10-year incumbent Steve Kouplan, the Democratic minority leader."I didn't think I had a chance going against Goliath. He could outspend me, out-market me and do pretty much anything when it came to money. So it was just me talking to people," Phillips said.Phillips sat at Mamadou's Restaurant in Glenpool, Oklahoma by himself to watch the results come in on election night. He said even his wife went home early. But the Republican stayed neck in neck with the incumbent all evening."Then the polls and stuff actually went down. So they stopped reporting for about 10 minutes and we were stuck on the last four counties. I was losing within half a point. Then they all came in at the same time and I went up and won by 350 votes," Phillips said.Phillips said he spoke with a couple other lawmakers and put a few posts on social media. That was the extent of his campaign."Straight party voting was huge for the Republican party. They came out and they wanted the Republicans in and I was the Republican. That accounted for 50-something percent of my votes," Phillips said.The representative-elect is a teacher at Tulsa Community College. His father, sister and stepmother are also educators. The family tells KJRH they're excited for new faces at the state capitol."I'm certainly anticipating some great changes. That we could go from being the last in something to being the first in something. NEAR CALIENTE, Nevada — Two single-engine planes collided Thursday afternoon while trying to contain a wildfire near Caliente, Nev., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.KTNV in Las Vegas, reports the collision occurred at about 1 p.m. MT between two Air Tractor AT8T airplanes. They were deployed to help battle the Bishop Fire, burning about 17 miles from Caliente and more than two hours northeast of Las Vegas.Officials say one person was aboard each aircraft at the time of the crash, and the Bureau of Land Management later confirmed the pilots died in the collision.“We offer our sincere condolences to the families of the two pilots and to all those working with the BLM Nevada Ely District,” said BLM Nevada State Director Jon Raby.Ground and aerial resources continued to take on the Bishop Fire in Rainbow Canyon as of Thursday afternoon, with the blaze approximately 500 acres.The airplanes involved are used to support firefighters on the ground and can deliver up to 800 gallons of fire retardant and operate in areas where larger air tankers cannot, according to the BLM. 1106
