SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A 60-year-old serial rapist in Northern California whose crimes went undetected for nearly three decades was sentenced to 897 years in state prison. The Sacramento Bee reported that Roy Charles Waller, dubbed the “NorCal Rapist,” showed no emotion Friday and sat with eyes closed during sentencing. He declined to address the victims or the court. A jury in Sacramento convicted Waller of raping nine women in their homes between 1991 and 2006 in six counties. Investigators used DNA technology and genealogy websites to zero in on Waller and arrested him more than two years ago. A woman raped in 2006 testified that the day Waller was arrested was the first time she could take a shower without fear. Waller says he is innocent. 764

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — People putting their “I Voted” stickers on women’s suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony’s headstone will see something new this year: a plastic cover. Her headstone, in a cemetery in Rochester, New York, now has a shield to prevent further degradation to the marble from the stickers’ glue and the cleaners used to remove the stickers. The sticker trend became popular on Election Day 2016, when as many as 12,000 people visited the cemetery where Anthony is buried.A spring restoration effort had revealed the damage done to the marble marker. This year, WHAM reports that city officials have also marked off a pathway for visitor to follow so they don’t disrupt other gravesites. It’s one way and visitors are asked to maintain 6 feet of social distancing. 782

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say somebody stole a tripod from a California Department of Transportation crew and then dropped it from an overpass onto a Sacramento freeway, impaling the lung of a passenger in a van.The driver of the van, Tim Page, tells KCRA-TV that he was on Interstate 5 Thursday morning when the yellow-and-red tripod smashed through the glass. He says it went through his passenger's lung and popped out.The man survived but with broken ribs and a partially punctured lung.Authorities say a 32-year-old man, who the Sacramento Bee identified as homeless, threw the tripod was arrested after a brief struggle and chase. He had an outstanding warrant but may face a charge of attempted murder.Page volunteers with El Dorado Veteran Resources and had picked up his passenger, another veteran, from the airport. 845

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has reappointed two leaders of California's embattled high-speed rail board days before leaving office.Brown on Wednesday gave Dan Richard and Tom Richards new four-year terms. They serve as chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the California High-Speed Rail Authority's board of directors. It oversees the project to construct a high-speed train traveling between San Francisco and Los Angeles in less than three hours. The project is years behind scheduled and tens of millions of dollars over budget. A recent audit faulted the authority for poor contract management and decision making.Brown's action comes five days before he hands the governorship over to fellow Democrat Gavin Newsom. The terms of two other governor-appointed board members have expired, meaning Newsom may still have a chance to choose members. 876

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A federal judge has sided with the Trump campaign's request to halt a California law that's aimed at forcing the president to release his tax returns.U.S. District Judge Morrison England Jr. said Thursday that he'll issue a formal ruling by Oct. 1.The ruling marks a major victory for Trump, who is fighting multiple Democratic-led efforts to force him to reveal the returns. California is expected to appeal. The Trump campaign and Republican parties have sued over the law requiring candidates to release their tax returns to appear on the March 2020 primary ballot.Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the law in July.Lawyers for Trump and Republicans argue that it violates the U.S. Constitution by adding an additional requirement to run for president. They also said a federal law requiring presidents to disclose financial information supersedes state law. 898
