SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Seattle hiker arrived in San Diego over the weekend, where he'll begin a 2,600-mile trek to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer's disease.Toby Gallier's family was first impacted by the disease four years ago when his mom's partner was diagnosed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Ocean Beach woman was alarmed by a flier taped to her door saying "the antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him." Holly Raines said her 7-year-old son found the flier taped on their front door. “I started reading the letter but I was like half asleep so I started panicking a little bit because it just seemed very threatening and very intense,” Raines said. Several other neighbors say they got one too. The letter stated it was from New Life Christian Chapel, which is a few blocks away from where Raines lives in Ocean Beach. “It was very damning and then it has like a phrase that says ‘The antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him, there is no middle ground,’” she said. Raines said the flier quotes several Bible verses but found them far from comforting. “The words just aren’t very friendly, they talk about slaying lambs and antichrist and unrighteousness,” Raines said. It ended by inviting her to a home Bible study but she can't help but feel like the church crossed a line. “We have a lot of friends that go to church around here and a lot of the community churches here are awesome, they do great things,” Raines said. “The idea of taping anything on somebody’s door is a lot and this is a full document of typing. I mean if anyone wrote me a letter like that I would think it was an angry letter.”10News reached out to New Life Christian Chapel, and Pastor Thomas J. McNearny told 10News in an e-mail:"My purpose in distributing the flyers was simply to get the Word of God out to the public. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After seven years of demanding that their death and disability benefits be restored, San Diego City Firefighters finally had their voices heard after the City Council voted unanimously to bring the benefits back.The council made the decision less than five minutes after the firefighters arrived at City Hall and was met with a standing ovation.The benefits were eliminated after the passing of Proposition B, so all firefighters hired after 2012, about 350, never received them."All other firefighters across the state and most across the country have a defined death-and-disability if killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty, they have a pension, and they have pay parity," said Jesse Connor, president of the firefighters union.The benefits provide city employees injured in the line of duty and unable to continue work 50 percent of their base salary until death. For those killed in the line of duty, the money would go to their spouse.After lengthy back and forth talks between the city's firefighters union and the city's labor negotiators, an agreement was made.But, in that time, the union says it had trouble with recruitment and retention, leading to countless hours of overtime as firefighters continued to serve the community every day and hour of the week.Now, they say they are feeling thankful that all firefighters will have equal benefits."It's amazing," said 17-year veteran of the city's fire department, Tony Tosca. "The word 'unity' comes to mind. We're all equally happy for the same benefits, and moving forward it's a great thing to know that everyone coming on we're all gonna have that same equal benefit." 1671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman was left bleeding and bruised after she was forced to jump off an electric scooter. She had to think quickly when she realized the brakes were cut Tuesday night in Pacific Beach. "My option was either to jump off the scooter or to just roll with it into traffic," said Mary Adamcyk. Adamcyk says she rides electric scooters all the time. Tuesday night, it didn't end well. "I was really freaked out because there were two cars coming towards me."So, she decided to jump. "I just kind of went flying, I mean, I jumped off, I fell to my knees, my cell phone went flying," said Adamcyk. "I had holes just torn into both of my knees, they got cut up. They found head injuries due to scooter crashes have tripled in the last decade. Although she didn't hit her head, Adamcyk reported the incident to Bird. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Sheriff's Department employee has been removed from duty after reportedly sharing a vulgar image.Although 10News hasn't seen the image, it was described as a vulgar image depicting George Floyd. The department says the image was shared electronically and was brought to the attention of leaders by a member of the department. The employee hasn't been identified."We were so disgusted that an employee may have shared such a vulgar image that we took immediate action," the department said in a statement to 10News.The department says the employee was removed from their official duties and had their peace officer authority removed."The Sheriff's Department does not tolerate any acts or actions by its employees that are a detriment to our core values. We also cannot comment on an active investigation because of Penal Code 832.7," the department added.An internal affairs investigation is underway, the department says. 962
