SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a woman in a Mountain View apartment, San Diego police announced Thursday.SDPD officials said officers responded to reports of a shooting inside an apartment unit in the 4500 block of Imperial Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.Officers arrived and found a woman, later identified as Emily Cortez, with a gunshot wound in her upper torso. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Kearny Mesa couple says a local hawk is preying on neighborhood cats, and hope their story prompts pet owners to be cautious. Over Memorial Day weekend Caralee and Joe Jaeckels took their cats outside to enjoy the garden. Not long after, they said a hawk swooped down. "At first we thought it was kind of cool," they said. "It's this bird flying around. But we discovered pretty quickly that it was not a cool thing."The bird began attacking the couple's cat Ludwick. Thankfully, the 16-pound cat was able to escape with only a scratch on his face. His owners say this probably meant he was too heavy for the hawk to carry him away. 677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of voters have already cast their ballots in San Diego County. Registrar Michael Vu said of the 1.92 million voters in the county, 1,081,727 already voted as of Sunday. The Registrar of Voters pushed for early voting in 2020 to avoid crowds on election days and Vu said that hope has been met.“I’ve never seen numbers like this in advance of Election Day before,” said Vu.He said that they’re expecting between 80% and 85% turnout this year. With two more days to cast ballots, they’re not sure what method the remaining voters will use to vote. He added that in the 2016 presidential election, close to 500,000 people voted in person on Election Day, and it’s possible that many could still vote in person Tuesday, meaning the traditional Election Day lines could still be seen.“Hundreds of thousands of individuals we’re still expecting to vote and the question is will they vote with their mail ballot or will they vote in person,” said Vu.He said the fate of the next couple of days are in the hands of the voters and how they decide to vote.Vu added that if and when people vote, they’re encouraged to go to their designated super poll location. There are 235 super polls across the county. Residents can locate their polling place online here. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man carjacked two vehicles within hours in Otay Mesa, San Diego Police said Friday.The first carjacking happened in the parking lot of the Iris Trolley Station on Iris Ave. about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.A man was outside of his Volkswagen Jetta and a woman was sitting in the car when the suspect got into the driver’s seat, police said.The woman got out of the car and the suspect drove away, according to San Diego Police.Officers searched the area and found the suspect had parked the Jetta at Palm Ave. and Beyer Way and carjacked another car.Two men who were sitting in a Hyundai Genesis when the suspect grabbed the driver and pulled him out of the car. The passenger got out and the suspect drove away in the Genesis, officers said.The suspect crashed into a white SUV at I-805 and Sweetwater, police said.Paramedics took the driver, 33-year-old Daniel Perez, to the hospital with a knee injury. 927

The report by the organization, In the Public Interest, found SDUSD loses nearly ,913 a year per charter school student, largely due to costs that cannot be reduced when a student goes to a charter school. SDUSD is the second-largest district in California.There are about 120 charter schools in San Diego County. Roughly 50 of those schools are in the SDUSD. Elva Barajas’ son attends a local charter school.“I liked what they were offering for the students. There were smaller classrooms… less than 25 kids in the classroom. It was more individualized for the students,” Barajas said.Miriam Rodriguez’s daughters go to traditional schools within SDUSD.“At the end of the day, the schools are in my community,” Rodriguez said.The report, called "Breaking Point: The Cost of Charter Schools to Public School District," analyzed three California school districts including San Diego.Superintendent Cindy Marten and SDUSD trustee Richard Barrera argued that local districts need more control over school charter decisions. Barrera said district leaders need to ask critical questions, including fiscal impact. Currently, he said they are not allowed to do so.“What is it bringing to the table, what is it adding to the mix of schools… but also, what is it taking away?” Barrera said.Michelle Anderson, Regional Manager for the California Charter Schools Association, said districts already have enough oversight. “This is really a misrepresentation of issues that came through from a report that was paid for by special interests. Charter schools are really not the bad guys in this issue,” Anderson said.Both sides agree that education funding goes beyond this particular issue, although they differ in the impact of charter schools.
