LA JOLLA (KGTV) - A car slammed into the wall of a fire station in La Jolla on Saturday night, narrowly missing firefighters.The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s station 9 on Ardath Lane near Torrey Pines Road. The car veered off the road and crashed into the patio wall of the station, while crews were eating dinner, according to Battalion Chief Joseph Scuri. The car missed the firefighters by about 12 feet. No one was injured.Three people were in the car at the time, but were also not injured. A natural gas line to an outdoor barbeque was hit and severed. Firefighters quickly turned off the gas to the station. SDG&E came out and repaired it. 704
LA JOLLA (KGTV): Researchers at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center and the La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology have teamed up to find a new way to fight cancer.They've created a vaccine that can help teach the immune system how to attack only cancer cells and leave the rest of the body alone."Patients will be able to tolerate their therapy much better than they have so far on conventional approaches," says Dr. Stephen Schoenberger from the La Jolla Institute.Each vaccine is highly personalized to the patient. According to a release from UC San Diego, the vaccines "defines the neoantigens – foreign protein fragments recognized by the immune system – in a patient’s cancer. With neoantigens identified, the team can identify peptides – strings of amino acids – that can be used to create a vaccine to stimulate a protective immune system response."Simply put, the new vaccine takes information from a patient's immune system and the tumor and uses it to help white blood cells to fight it."We're giving them life and giving them hope," says Dr. Schoenberger.The first patient in the clinical trial is Tamara Strauss. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and went through chemotherapy and surgery."It was brutal," says Strauss. "It's been three and a half years of hell."Strauss' parents helped fund the clinical trial with a million donation. She says she feels fortunate they could do that, but also hopeful that it helps others down the road."I really pray that this vaccine and personalized form of treatment really does change the paradigm of cancer treatment," says Strauss.During the trial, ten patients will get three doses of the vaccine. KENOSHA, Wis. — A Wisconsin high school teacher is on paid leave after students recorded her using a racial slur on camera during class.The teacher can be heard repeatedly using the “N-word” several times while students in the class laugh. The parent of the student who took the video told WTMJ the incident started when a student at Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin used the word with another student.That’s when the parent said the teacher used the slur and said that she should be able to use it because it is used within the African-American community. (KGTV) -- A sexually violent predator who was convicted of several crimes against children, including rape, could be placed in Jacumba Hot Springs, according to a state plan. Alan Earl James, 56, could be placed at 45612 Old Highway 80, according to a plan proposed by the Department of State Hospitals. The announcement was made Monday. Public comment on the placement is being accepted between February 20 and March 6.Comments made by concerned residents will be included in the formal response to the court at a hearing for the proposed placement on March 22. JAMUL, Calif., (KGTV) — Nearly 200 volunteers helped to beautify an injured Navy Veteran’s new home in Jamul. “I stepped on one of the IEDs, and that’s when I got blown up,” Petty Officer Christopher Andrieu told 10News.He joined the Navy in 2007, and for his entire service, he has worked as an EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) officer. But in 2013, when he and SEAL Team 5 were in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, he sustained a life-changing injury. Since then, even little things have become arduous tasks for the double amputee. “To get the dishes down, I jump up on the counter if I’m not on my legs,” he chuckled. Andrieu and his family now live in a small house in Claremont. But thanks to non-profit, Homes for Our Troops, he will soon be moving up the hill to much larger home in Jamul. “It was my top choices for a lot, so I was really happy we got this,” Andrieu said. The lot has a beautiful view of the small town and has a spacious half acre front yard. The home is not finished yet but has appliances and shelves built slightly lower to accommodate Andrieu. It has been two years since Andrieu started the application process with Homes for Our Troops. One of the last big projects was the landscaping. That’s where the volunteers came in. “It’s really cool to support who we want to be,” volunteer, Alex Kulik said. Kulik is a senior at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, hoping to become an EOD expert. He and nine other Midshipmen doing summer training in San Diego volunteered to help the non-profit with the project. “I don’t think any of us has experienced what he has, and just to see his optimism, I think it should be able to push anyone,” Kulik said. “Military or non-military, to get through whatever their challenge may be, and come out with a smile in the end.“Andrieu’s heroism and positivity drove the hundreds of volunteers to create a luxurious yard in just 55 minutes."It's a life-changing moment for a deserving veteran," Community Outreach Coordinator for Homes for Our Troops, Mell Barbosa, said. “All the people who came out, I'd say most of them, I didn’t know beforehand,” Andrieu said. “I can’t even say it… it’s just awesome.”Homes for our Troops is sprinting to the finish line.
