We tend to go to thrift stores to find good deals and to save money.  But have you ever thought about making money at a thrift store instead?The idea is to buy items that you can resell at a higher price online.Ecommerce expert Glen Zubia buys and sells items for a living on sites like eBay and makes up to ,000 a month.So what are the things to look for?  “First probably go electronics; electronics people buy DVD/VHS combos, old video games,” said Zubia.When first starting out, he suggests you stick with familiar items.  For example, Zubia suggests items related to pop culture, Disney items, and certain exclusive products tied to sports teams.  "And then of course, vintage always comes back," said Zubia.If you go to a thrift store and see an item you would never buy, just know there is likely someone out there who would.  The key is to do some quick research online to find out what people are wanting and how much they are willing to spend.Zubia points out that just because something is listed on eBay at a certain price, it doesn't necessarily mean it will actually sell for that price.  "But the completed listings will tell us, 'okay this is selling for ,' here it is in my hand for .  Now I have an expectation to make a certain amount of money,” said Zubia.There are other sites besides eBay where you can sell your items like Tradsey, Poshmart and Amazon. Zubia recommends first time eBay sellers build their clientele before pricing items high.“You’re at zero.  A lot of buyers aren’t going to trust you right away. So, it’s always good to start off with stuff you already have, cheaper items, building up your feedback and then you’ll get more customers coming in,” said Zubia.Also, don’t just limit yourself to thrift stores to find these money-making treasures. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security has asked the military to provide more help securing the U.S.-Mexico border, two defense officials said Friday amid a political standoff over President Donald Trump's demand for more money to build a border wall.The acting secretary of defense, Pat Shanahan, has not decided how to respond to the DHS request, but in the past the Pentagon has provided help when asked. At one point last fall there were nearly 5,900 active-duty troops along the border in Texas, Arizona and California to assist border patrol agents and to erect wire barriers. That number now is about 2,350.The defense officials said DHS asked for certain military capabilities, not any number of troops. It will be up to Shanahan to decide whether more active-duty troops are dispatched. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the request for assistance has not yet been fully processed.One of the officials said DHS wants the military to put up concertina wire as barriers along 160 miles of border. That would be in addition to 70 miles of concertina wire that combat engineers put up last fall. If the new work is taken on by the military, it might require an extension of the current deployment beyond its scheduled end Jan. 31. The official said DHS did not specifically ask for an extension, but it has not been ruled out.The troops have been erecting and reinforcing border barriers but are not performing law enforcement tasks or engaging with migrants. Some also have been providing transportation and logistical help as well as medical assistance to troops and to Customs and Border Protection personnel along the border.Many in Congress, including leading Democrats, have criticized the troop deployments as a waste of money and a misuse of military resources.Separately, there are about 2,200 National Guard troops deployed along the border. It is possible that some of those, or additional deployments of National Guard personnel, could be used to perform some of the work requested by DHS. 2049

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The backbone of the American election system rides on the shoulders of an army of paid volunteers: poll workers, who take time out of their lives to spend Election Day helping others have their say at the ballot box.“Poll worker recruitment is an issue every election cycle,” said Jeanette Senecal with the League of Women Voters.It’s an issue even more so this year.In the 2016 election, there were nearly a million poll workers across the country, 917,694, working at more than 116,000 polling sites.Many of the poll workers tended to be older: 56% were over the age of 61.Now, though, concerns about COVID-19 mean many in this population, vulnerable to the virus, are choosing to sit out this time around.“Poll workers are kind of the make or break point,” Senecal said. “If they're the people who are interfacing with the voters, they're the people who are supporting those voters at the polling place on Election Day.”Officials estimate that across the U.S. about a quarter of a million poll workers may still be needed. It can take about 30 days to train them all, which means they need poll workers to sign up right now, in order to be ready by Election Day. Poll worker pay varies by county, but in some it can be as much as an hour.“This is a real opportunity for us to recruit a new generation of Americans, who can help ensure a safe and fair and as smooth as possible Election Day,” said Erika Soto Lamb, a vice-president at Comedy Central and MTV.The networks are part of a new, national non-profit coalition called Power the Polls, targeting younger people, who have never been poll workers before.“The work of Power the Polls is really in sounding the alarm bell, bringing people into the mix and then connecting them with their local boards of elections and secretaries of state, to make sure they are plugged in to work the polls in areas that need it the most,” Soto Lamb said.If there is a shortage of poll workers, experts fear some polling places may not be able to open at all and the ones that do could experience long lines.“This summer, we saw a voting rights legend pass away in Congressman John Lewis, whose life was built around voting rights and access – and this is one of those component parts,” Soto Lamb said.So far, Power the Polls has recruited 160,000 poll workers for Election Day. However, not everyone who signs up, will show up, so they are aiming to recruit as many as possible to ensure there are enough poll workers available.According to Power the Polls, the states with the most need for additional poll workers are: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.Learn more about becoming a poll worker here. 2760

WAUKESHA -- A train struck and killed a pedestrian and their dog Monday morning in Waukesha, Wisconsin.Waukesha Police Captain Dan Baumann told Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the train hit a pedestrian and a dog around 6:40 a.m. near Barstow and Carroll.The train ended up stopping at Broadway Street in Waukesha for roughly two hours -- which blocked eight streets in the downtown Waukesha area during the morning commute.Police are still at the scene investigating and have not released any other information.  558
