Twana Wilson received an Amazon Echo Dot as a gift from her husband a few months back. He thought she would enjoy having Alexa play music and read her the weather forecast, but the Echo still sits in its original box. She won't use it.Why not? Because like so many people, Wilson suspects Amazon is watching her, even listening to her conversations through her phone and laptop. "I just can't get myself to do it yet," Wilson said. "I am not ready for it."She has her reasons. She was recently chatting with a friend who was flying to Paris. "The next day," Wilson said, "I had a targeted ad for booking flights to Paris." She said she had never done any web searches and had no plans for a trip to Europe.A week or so later, she says, she was talking with her husband about his Jeep. "Afterward I started having a stream of Jeep ads" she said. She said it's the same story if she ever discusses a product with friends via text messages. "I even get emails form Amazon saying, 'Hey, aren't you looking for this?' Actually I wasn’t," Wilson said.Like many other Amazon Prime members, Wilson is caught between the convenience of one-click everything and concerns about her privacy. Recent news reports that 1217

WhatsApp has revealed a vulnerability in its system that could have allowed hackers access to its users' phones, with a London-based human rights lawyer possibly among the targets. The encrypted messaging service, owned by Facebook, said Monday that it had discovered and fixed the vulnerability the attackers had sought to exploit. The hackers could implant malicious code on a victim's phone by placing a voice call to the victim on WhatsApp."The attack has all the hallmarks of a private company reportedly that works with governments to deliver spyware that takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems," a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement. While WhatsApp did not name the private company, a source familiar with the investigation into the attack said that company is NSO Group, an Israeli cyber company 841

US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos met with lawmakers on Tuesday, and defended the Trump Administration for proposing nearly million in cuts to Special Olympics. Devos was questioned on the subject by Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., who took issue with DeVos not knowing the number of participants in Special Olympics. “It’s 272,000 kids,” Pocan said,“Let me just say that I think Special Olympics is an awesome organization, one that is well supported by the philanthropic sector as well,” DeVos said.According to 2017 figures from Special Olympics, the organization had nearly 0 million in annual revenue. The majority of its budget comes from donations from individuals and corporations, which totals million a year.DeVos defended the move as one to save the government money. “We had to make some difficult decisions," she said. A number of prominent celebrities decried DeVos' testimony later on Tuesday. "Terrible. We should support athletes with disabilities, not rip away their opportunities," Chelsea Clinton tweeted. "The benefits of Special Olympics, which I have seen first hand as volunteer are IMMEASURABLE," actress Marlee Matlin tweeted. "DeVos proposal to cut their funding will adversely affect thousands with developmental disabilities. Don't let this happen!"According to Special Olympics, its mission is "to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community." 1735
