Police are warning about a terrifying phone scam where the person on the other end of the phone says they are holding a family member for ransom. One woman said she received one of these calls and it was the most frightening call she ever received.Natalie Bruser was heading home from work when her cellphone rang from a number she did not recognize."I answered, and it sounded like one of my kids crying, and I couldn't figure out who it was," said Bruser, who has three children. "They were crying super hard, and so I was hysterical."The sobbing young woman said she had been kidnapped. Bruser thought it sounded most like her daughter Nicole, who is in her 20s."It seems that a black Suburban pulled up, and people got out with guns," she said. "And Nicole started screaming."A man then got on the phone and said if Bruser wanted to see her daughter again, she needed to drive over at a gas station off Interstate 75 in Springboro, and get money from an ATM.The man said police were on their tail, and then he told Bruser to stay on the phone and not call 9-1-1. The man also said Bruser needed to act quickly or they would harm her daughter, who appeared to be still crying in the background."She was crying heavily," Bruser said. "And I said, 'Nicole, please calm down. I need to hear your voice. I need to really hear that you're OK.'"But it was all a scam.Luckily, Bruser was able to yell for help, and someone nearby called the police. Officers quickly sorted the situation out.It turned out that there was no black SUV with armed men inside, there was no police car in pursuit, and as for Bruser's daughter Nicole, she was home resting."I'm freaking out at this point. I don't know if they have her hostage or not," Bruser said. "So Springboro police actually went and banged on her door, and she was sleeping, and so here she was safe at home."How the scam worksIt's called the "virtual kidnapping scam."According to police, the caller is not local and does not even know your son or daughter's name. But panicked parents will grab hundreds of dollars, then run to the nearest Western Union desk to wire money for the release of their child.Reports from around the country say this is a very effective scam. The scammers usually tell their victims to stay on the phone and not let anyone know what is going on or they will harm their child. As for the black Chevy Suburban filled with kidnappers carrying guns, the scammers have seen action movies where this is a common trope. In a moment of panic however, it's easy to miss all the holes in the caller's story. So be suspicious of any strange phone calls that appear to be from a family member in distress. Make sure it is really your child."It can happen to anybody and it was so real," Bruser said. This is similar to the long-running grandparent scam, where someone calls and says, "Grandma, Grandpa, I got arrested and I need help."Before you do anything, call police, call a friend or call home.Chances are they are safe, and that way, you don't waste your money.___________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A "temporary area restrictions" ban has been issued ahead of President Donald Trump's scheduled visit to Otay Mesa this month. The San Diego Sheriff's Department requested the ban in anticipation of possible demonstrations surrounding the president's visit to view prototypes for his long-promised border wall."It has been widely advertised that there will be a Presidential visit to San Diego during the second week of March. This visit may prompt individuals and groups with contrasting opinions to gather in the area near the Border Wall Prototype Construction in Otay Mesa," an SDSO release said.RELATED: President Trump to visit California next weekThe restrictions, in place from 9 a.m. March 9 to 9 a.m. March 16, ban the presence of a variety of items that could be used as a weapon during a fight or riot, according to SDSO.The order bans "firearms, knives, daggers, clubs, pepper spray, mace, axes, picks, axe and pick handles, explosives, slingshots, bricks, rocks, baseball bats, shields, ice picks, fireworks, Tasers, bear spray, poles, sticks, dowels, boards (including, but not limited to when used for flags, signs and banners), glass bottles or containers, and any items generally considered as an implement of riot that can be used as a weapon for example chains or hose."Those items will be restricted from the east side of Enrico Fermi Drive from Airway Road to Via de la Amistad, Enrico Fermi Place, Airway Rd., Siempre Viva Rd., the public road from Airway Rd. to Siempre Viva Rd., and Via de la Amistad east of Enrico Fermi Dr.RELATED: Trump's comments leave gun debate paused in CongressSheriff's deputies will make anyone in possession of those items return them to their vehicles or dispose of them prior to entering the restricted area.Retired law enforcement professional and security expert Wayne Spees told 10News it appears SDSO is preparing for attendees looking to do more than just exercise their right to protest."This doesn’t mean there has been a specific threat, but more of a precautionary measure. Specifically, someone could use the distraction of a large crowd to instigate violence.  Local law enforcement’s main priority is public safety," Spees said. "They will want to give people the right to exercise free speech in addition to making sure it is done safely and lawfully."Spees added that none of the restricted items are "required for people to voice their opinion."RELATED: Mixed reaction to Trump administration suing CA over sanctuary lawsSeveral areas will be restricted to traffic as well.No parking zones will be issued for the east side of Enrico Fermi Drive from Airway Rd. to Via De La Amistad, the north and south sides of Airway Rd., east of Enrico Fermi Dr. to Kellianne Way, Enrico Fermi Place from Enrico Fermi Dr. to Kellianne Way, and Siempre Viva Rd. east of Enrico Fermi Dr.Traffic will be outright closed at Siempre Viva Rd. east of the CHP Inspection Facility driveway, Kellianne Way to Siempre Viva Rd., and Enrico Fermi Place from Enrico Fermi Dr. to Kellianne Way. 3124

PERRY HALL, Md. - Baltimore County Police say they have four teenage suspects in custody that are suspected to be involved in the death of an officer. At least one of the suspects is facing murder charges. On Monday around 2 p.m. ET, officer Amy Caprio was killed in the line of duty while investigating suspicious activity in Perry Hall. She was almost a four-year veteran of the force. Tuesday morning, police announced that a 16-year-old Dawnta Anthony Harris was arrested shortly after the death of that officer. Police were called to the scene after a woman said a black Jeep Wrangler was near her home, and three suspicious subjects were walking around. The woman stayed on the phone with a dispatcher and said that the three people had broken in and that an officer was on the ground after confronting the driver of the Jeep. Another witness says they saw the Wrangler drive over Caprio, and then drive away, according to the charging documents.Shortly after, another person called 911 saying that she found the Jeep Wrangler was abandoned nearby. A description of the driver was sent out over the police radio and officers were able to find the driver who was later identified as Harris. Charging documents continue to say that Harris admitted that he was waiting in the driver's seat of the Jeep Wrangler while his other associates were burglarizing the house. He then said he tried to drive away in the Wrangler when he saw Caprio arrive in the area. He tried to flee, but Caprio followed him to a cul-de-sac.Caprio demanded he exit the car. He opened the door slightly, shut it, and then drove toward her. He then admitted leaving the Wrangler where it was later found nearby, according to the documents. Harris has been charged with first-degree murder. A spokesperson with police did say the teenager will be charged as an adult.Baltimore County Police say Harris' associates are in custody and they are all teenage boys. Detectives have verified that the group were involved in burglaries in the area. Officers will be canvassing for property stolen during the burglaries on Tuesday.  2176
