LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Workers at Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons/Pavilions throughout Southern California and as far north as Santa Maria ``overwhelmingly'' ratified a new contract with the grocery chains, averting a potentially costly and disruptive strike, union officials announced Thursday. Officials with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, the Los Angeles-area union representing grocery workers, issued a statement saying the deal ``represents the most significant increases in wages and benefits in over 30 years.'' ``This agreement is a first step towards security good, career jobs in the changing grocery industry,'' Kathy Finn, secretary-treasurer of UFCW 770, said in a statement. ``As important as the hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements to members is the way we got to this contract -- by standing together store by store and with our communities to demand recognition of the value we earn these corporations every day.'' Union members cast ballots on the contract proposal Monday and Tuesday. The tentative deal was announced Sunday. The previous contract between the union and the grocery companies expired in March. Grocery workers in June voted to authorize a strike if a contract deal could not be reached -- raising fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days. When the tentative deal was announced Sunday, Ralphs spokesman John Votava said, ``We are pleased to have worked with the union to secure increased wages, continued premium health care coverage, and pension. Our associates are the heart of our company and this agreement is a reflection of their contributions.'' According to the union, the three-year deal includes wage increases of .55 and .65 per hour depending on job classification, with pay retroactive to March. Union officials said the pact also includes more guaranteed work hours for veteran workers, improvements in health care coverage for employees and their families, full pension funding and the start of a movement to close ``the wage gap between job classifications.'' The employees work at 532 stores stretching from Central California to the Mexican border. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A water main break created a sinkhole Friday, swallowing cars and flooding streets in South Los Angeles.The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said a 24-inch cast iron water main broke around 5 a.m. near Towne Avenue and East 55th Street."We can't shut it down fast. On this shutoff, there's 12 valves involved. You just can't shut it down completely. You have to keep some water in the system. It's just a slow process," Eric Shavly from LADWP told KABC. "Whatever the cause, it could be corrosion, age - we don't know at this moment until we dig down and see the actual damage on the water main."A pickup truck that fell into the sinkhole also cracked a gas line, causing gas and water to be shut off to the area. 41 people were evacuated during the emergency, KABC reported.After four hours, crews gained control of the flow.The cause of the water main break was unclear. 910

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A shirtless man is in custody after leading Los Angeles-area authorities on an auto pursuit that ended in a Venice Beach parking lot where he was taken down by a stun gun.News helicopters showed the scene Friday afternoon as the pursuit transitioned from a freeway to city streets and then entered the parking lot, where the driver finally stopped and got out of the SUV.The man started walking away, but officers equipped with guns and less-lethal weapons closed in and he suddenly fell flat on his back.Officers swarmed the man as beachgoers gathered to watch.Police tell KTLA the man was suspected of assault and making criminal threats against his mother. 686
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A technical problem has caused a lag in California’s tally of coronavirus test results, casting doubt on the accuracy of recent data showing improvements in the infection rate and hindering efforts to track the spread. State Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said Tuesday that in recent days California has not been receiving a full count through electronic lab reports because of the unresolved issue. The state’s data page now carries a disclaimer saying the numbers represent an underreporting of actual positive cases per day.
