The zoo says Zura, a 39-year-old Western lowland gorilla, was being treated for “long-term digestive issues” but her condition recently had worsened and she died Friday.Zura arrived in San Francisco in 1982 from the Columbus Zoo, where her grandmother was Colo. Colo, who died in 2017, was widely known as the first gorilla in the world to be born in captivity. San Diego (KGTV)- Just weeks ago the Veterans Village of San Diego wasn’t sure they’d have the money to fund their annual Stand Down event. But thanks to generous sponsors, the organization is helping hundreds of homeless veterans this weekend. The three-day event is being held at San Diego High School. More than 700 veterans are expected to participate in the event throughout the weekend. A variety of services is being offered. Some veterans say they are in desperate need of housing, while others tell 10News they are just fighting to keep the roofs they already have over their heads. “I’m minding my own business, next thing I hear knocks on the door ‘hey you can’t park here,’” says Vietnam Veteran Robert Ewing who was given 15 parking tickets for his motor home in the last three months. “That’s why I’m here trying to get rid of these.”Ewing says it has been a struggle trying to find a safe place to park his motor home. Among a variety of services, Homeless Court is being provided at the annual Stand Down event. “The City Council needs to sleep on the streets for a couple of nights and see what the homeless go through. It’s no joke,” says Ewing. For more than three decades, the Veterans Village of San Diego has been putting together this event. It brings in more than 100 organizations to help the homeless. Even though donations were low a few weeks ago, organizers say they were never going to cancel the event. They are just grateful for their donors, so they did not have to scale the event down. 1529

San Diego (KGTV)- There are no regrets for a San Diego man who risked his life when he stumbled on a wreck in the middle of last week's rainstorm. "If you ask me, I probably would have done it again," says Victor Ruvalcava. On a rainy Wednesday morning, Dec. 4th, Ruvalcava says he saw a car flip over on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley. The young driver was ejected from the car. "I park behind his car, get out to see if he's ok, I asked him hey is there anyone else in the car. He didn't respond," says Ruvalcava. "I look towards the car, and that's when I get hit by the SUV."He was thrown about 100 feet after that SUV slammed into him. Ruvalcava spent days in the hospital with several injuries, which include a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and leg. While in the hospital, he says the young man he stopped to help, and his family came to visit him. He says they were "extremely thankful." CHP says for safety reasons, they don't recommend drivers stopping to help crash victims on a busy freeway. They should call 911. But Ruvalcava says he'd do it all over again. Family members have set up a GoFund Me account to help with his medical expenses. 1160

San Diego (KGTV)- Today marks 18 years since the terror attacks in New York. As millions around the country reflect on 9/11, San Diegans are honoring those who lost their lives that day. A ceremony was held at the Veterans Museum, in Balboa Park this morning, where many had a chance to ring America's Freedom Bell in honor of the victims. The names of all nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives were read. "Its that fear of this could happen again," says Michael Timson. "That's why we have to have tributes like this; to remember, to be ready, and to honor the people who lost their lives that day."America's Freedom Bell was first rung 23 times for the law enforcement officers who were killed. The bell was forged with 11 pounds of steel from the World Trade Center. "I saw the second plane hit and I said this isn't an accident. This is an attack," says Timson. "It was really hard for me to understand what was going on."The ceremony symbolically started at 8:46 a.m. to coincide with the time in which the first tower was hit. "These are people, innocent people, in two buildings and the pentagon that were hit by terrorists," says Richard Rovsek, Chairman of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation. "I think Americans should never forget that."Bell ringers will receive a personalized commemorative certificate which will include a full list of the victim's names. "I pray for the families, I pray that this never happens again and pray that we never forget," says Timson. 1485

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) The two-year-old twin girls who were in a truck that sped off of Sunset Cliffs Saturday are recovering.That’s according to a family friend who started a GoFundMe campaign to help the twins’ mother with any expenses related to the crash.“She’s a great mother, she’s sticking strong through all of this, the girls are doing good,” said family friend Adrianna Lopez. “Money should be the last thing she needs to worry about, it’s just about keeping herself sane through all of this, her kids their health, mental, physical, everything.”Lopez and a family member tell 10News the girls are now stable. She said the twins just turned two years old in May.On Saturday, the toddlers were riding in a truck that San Diego Police say was driven by their father.Officers were warned to be on the lookout for a suicidal man threatening to drive off of the Coronado Bridge.Cellphone GPS data located the father, now identified as 47-year-old Robert Brians, at Sunset Cliffs.SDPD K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese was close by and jumped into action after the truck went over the cliffside.He and other first responders were able to save the twins and Brians.“The action that the first responders did, we’re just forever grateful, forever grateful,” said Lopez.Brians was arrested for two counts of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping, one count of burglary, and two counts of child cruelty.The San Diego District Attorney’s office said is has until Wednesday to make a filing decision.
