BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisory body Tuesday started a new seminar to improve the capabilities of 296 national political advisors in advising the government work.During the four-day seminar, the participants, who were from 34 walks of life, will attend lectures and hold panel discussions focusing such topics as how to persisting in and improving the system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, as well as the basic requirements for advisors to better perform their duties.Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the top advisory body in China, met with the participants at the opening ceremony of the seminar.The seminar is the fifth of the kind ever organized by the 11th CPPCC National Committee. Altogether 1,342 CPPCC members have attended the seminars.

GUANGZHOU, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A man who had allegedly shot dead four people including two traffic policemen last month in south China's Guangdong province went on trial on Monday.The trial opened at an intermediate people's court in Jieyang City, where the suspect is charged with killing the two traffic police officers on July 5.Hu Yihua, the suspect, 29, was involved in two murder cases, police said.He robbed and shot dead a couple at a cinema parking lot in Yiwu City, Zhejiang province, at midnight July 3, and then fled to Guangdong in the victims' Lexus sedan. He disguised the car license plate and then discarded it.While sleeping in the sedan at a highway service zone on July 5, Hu was cornered by two traffic policemen on patrol duty in Jieyang as the car was without a license plate. He shot them dead and fled to Fujian, where he was nabbed on July 8 after more than one thousand police personnel were mobilized in the search for him.The sedan that Hu had stolen, a loaded pistol and identity cards of the slain police officers were found in Hu's possession.The court did not say when it would rule on the case.

TORONTO, Canada, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao laid out on Sunday a three-point proposal for promoting a strong, sustainable and balanced global economic growth, calling for joint efforts of the international community for global economic recovery.While addressing the fourth G20 summit in Toronto, Hu said in his speech titled "Work in Unity for the Future" that the world economy is gradually recovering with the help of the concerted efforts of G20 members and the entire international community.However, he warned that the recovery was unfirmly established, unbalanced, and still facing "quite many uncertainties," such as the expanding sovereign debt crisis, drastic exchange rates fluctuations of major currencies and persistent volatility in the international financial markets.Seeking to address these problems and materialize a strong and balanced growth worldwide, Hu laid out a three-point proposal."First, we need to turn the G20 from an effective mechanism to counter the international financial crisis to a premier platform for advancing international economic cooperation," said the Chinese president."The complex world economic situation makes it necessary for the G20 to play a guiding role. SHENYANG, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China mobilized helicopters for the first time in a highway medical rescue drill in northeast China' s Liaoning Province, the provincial bureau of transport said Thursday.The rescue drill took place at 10 a.m. on the Shenyang-Dalian highway where a bridge collapse and traffic pile-up purportedly injuring dozens was simulated.Two helicopters, an S-76 from China' s Ministry of Transport and an Mi-17 from Shenyang Military Command, were dispatched to rescue those acting as wounded in the blocked section inaccessible to rescue vehicles.The rescue workers were airlifted to the crash site and successfully extricated two "trapped" bus passengers within three minutes before transporting them to nearby hospitals.More than 300 people participated in the drill organized by China' s Ministry of Transport and the provincial government of Liaoning.

KUNMING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese local officials were ordered to carry out pre-emptive evacuations to avoid heavy casualties in geological disasters after a series of mudslides left nearly 2,000 people dead or missing in less than two weeks.In a work conference held in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Minister of Land and Resources Xu Shaoshi ordered local officials not to hesitate in forcing residents in disasters-threatened zones to move."As long as there is a sign of geological disasters looming, officials should take it seriously and carry out the evacuations," Xu said. "It is better to hear the people's blames than their cries."Xu also ordered local offcials to strengthen monitoring efforts by using advanced technologies and mobilizing the public.China has been suffering from a string of rain-triggered disasters recently as the country battles its worst floods in more than a decade.Yunnan is the latest to be hit by massive mudslides.As of Sunday, 29 people were killed and 63 remained missing after mudslides hit the remote, mountainous town of Gongshan in the province on Wednesday.In the northwestern province of Gansu, at least 1,435 people were killed and another 330 are reported missing after an avalanche of mud and rocks hit the center town of Zhouqu County at mid-night Aug. 7.Rain-triggered mudslides also killed more than 18 people in Wenchuan and Qingchuan counties in southwest China's Sichuan - which was devastated by a massive earthquake in 2008.
