SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A La Jolla taco stop is being hailed among the best stops among fast-casual favorites like In-N-Out and Shake Shack. The Taco Stand was named the fourth best fast casual restaurant in the U.S. by Trip Advisor, as part of the website's 2019 Travelers' Choice awards. The La Jolla restaurant was hailed by reviewers as having the "best steak burritos ever tasted" and simply "taco nirvana.""We are so thrilled by this news and grateful," The Taco Stand co-owner Julian Hakim told 10News. "The Taco Stand was built out of a passion for food, making great tacos and burritos. It is a simple philosophy and appears to be working."RELATED: Chula Vista taco spot attracts customers from all over San DiegoHakin's love for tacos found in Mexico led to the vision and creation of the La Jolla taco shop, according to Zagat.Their Tijuana-inspired tacos are crafted with handmade corn tortillas, and salsa and guacamole that's made from scratch daily. They also serve a variety of locally made paletas, or Mexican popsicles; Rosarito-style churros with dipping sauce; and elote, or grilled corn with mayonnaise, cheese, and chili powder. The restaurant ranked just under In-N-Out, Shake Shack, and Earl of Sandwich (all of which have locations in San Diego County) on Trip Advisor's list. Another popular taco spot, Tacos El Gordo (though in Las Vegas), came in at seventh and San Diego's Burger Lounge came in 14th.The Taco Stand has locations in La Jolla, Encinitas, downtown San Diego, North Park, Orange County, Miami, and soon, Las Vegas. 1557

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego couple is doing all they can to bring joy to hundreds of kids living in orphanages and shelters around the county. And despite the pandemic, they have donated thousands of stuffed animals to little ones in need.Charles and Linda van Kessler, with Passion 4 Kids, have donated 5,000 stuffed animals this year to kids in orphanages and shelters around the county."They need so much more and deserve so much better," Linda van Kessler said. "For these kids, it means a lot. It's something that's theirs. Something that gives them unconditional love."More than half of Passion 4 Kids' donations have been delivered in the past month. The couple says the kids cling to their new toys like a security blanket, of sorts."They are just so craving for love and someone to care about them and play with them. Most of the time we end up in tears because it's just so heartbreaking," Linda said.Charles says he knows the power of giving comfort first hand. He spent nearly 10 years in an orphanage in Amsterdam during World War II."I saw my family snatched away for the nazis. So I ended up in a state orphanage for 8 years, of abuse. I ran away and when I came to America I immediately decided to create a charity," Charles van Kessler said. And the pandemic has taken a toll on children. Volunteers have not been able to make their regular visits."It's one more layer that's taken away from them," says Linda. The couple hopes the stuffed animals will bring them comfort until they can see their little friends again. To make a donation to Passion 4 Kids, click here. 1592

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A local medical spa is coming under fire for offering a coronavirus treatment that costs thousands of dollars but the spa director defends his actions.Dr. Jennings Staley operates Carmel Valley’s Skinny Beach med spa which specializes in treatments like Botox and laser hair removal. He says he’s been dealing with a lot over the last few days.“Death threats. My wife was in tears all day Saturday fielding phone calls from people who say I'm an unethical doctor,” he tells 10News.RELATED: Instacart employees threaten to strike, say job is currently too risky during COVID-19He's being accused of being unethical for advertising COVID-19 treatment packs with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. Last Friday, screen shots shared with 10News revealed his new COVID-19 treatment pricing plans which go up to nearly ,000 for a family resistance pack which includes, in part, the prescription drugs and vitamin C. “It just seems to me that it's a way to profit off of people's fear,” says Seattle-area family practitioner Dr. Leanne Kildare. RELATED: What's the difference? Cold vs. Flu vs. Coronavirus SymptomsWhen she saw the ads, she was stunned. One ad description reads in part, "Dr. Staley will evaluate your symptoms via telemedicine” and "if needed, a nurse or Dr. Staley will visit you at your home" for further evaluation and potential in-home COVID-19 testing and possibly start a treatment pack, which is "now available by prescription only through Skinny Beach med spa." “It doesn’t sit well,” adds Dr. Kildare.“I knew it would be a little bit controversial because there was the controversy around the fact that hydroxychloroquine wasn't approved until Sunday night but I didn't think people would be so angry,” Dr. Staley tells 10News.The FDA gave emergency approval Sunday to distribute hydroxychloroquine to hospitals, despite the potential side effects like heart problems, and lack of studies showing the medication's benefits.“I would not prescribe the medication without seeing the patient and evaluating them first,” Dr. Staley says.He tells 10News that he's treating about 20 patients with possible COVID-19 symptoms and he's only charging a few of them for his services. He adds that he doesn't have test kits yet and he has not yet prescribed any of them the hydroxychloroquine.Dr. Kildare believes it’s irresponsible to offer the drug outside of a controlled hospital setting.“I wouldn't take the risk. I wouldn't do it at this point in time,” she tells 10News.The ads have been taken down but Dr. Staley says he's still offering the treatments and he'll do them for free if patients can't afford them. 2654
