SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The discovery of suspicious packages near a downtown San Diego building prompted evacuations, but the boxes were later determined to be harmless.Authorities were called an area near the intersection of 6th Avenue and B Street at around 8:30 a.m. after several white boxes were found and deemed suspicious.The WeWork building through the 13th floor was evacuated and traffic lanes were closed in a nearby area due to the investigation. San Diego Union-Tribune staff members, who occupy space in the building, were forced to evacuate, 10News learned."We’ve seen some different tragedies in newsrooms around the country so I don’t think this is 100% a surprise for any newsroom to face something like this. Assaults against agents are up 300 percent compared to this time last year, according to San Diego Border Sector Chief Rodney Scott.An agent was struck in the face shield with a rock thrown at the border on New Year’s Eve and was not injured. “These incursions are organized they are bringing people down there for the express purpose of provoking a confrontation,” said Border Patrol agent Joshua Wilson. Researchers estimate Americans will spend more than 0 billion in retail this year, which means they need to staff seasonal workers ahead of the shopping rush. Macy’s announced they are looking for 80,000 seasonal workers. The Gap Company will hire 65,000 people. Target plans to add 120,000 seasonal team members this year, up 20% from last year. In San Diego County alone, Target plans to add 1,200 people to their staff this season. “I’m going full time at SDSU, and I knew that I was definitely looking for some work,” Elizabeth Gonzalez said. 10News Gonzalez at the Mission Valley Target’s hiring fair Saturday morning.
