CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A burglary victim is making a plea for the return of a priceless family heirloom after thieves forced open her front door and raided her Carlsbad home. Joanna Bradford returned home last Thursday and saw her front door open and damaged. "My heart started beating, immediately nervous and called police," said Bradford.Bradford eventually discovered a ransacked bathroom and bedroom. A new iPad and some jewelry had been stolen, including a gold-and-silver Omega watch belonging to her father, who passed away in 2013. He bought it in the 70s and wore it to work every day."I would put it on, look down, and see my dad. He was with me whenever I was wearing it," said Bradford.Bradford's Ring doorbell camera revealed clues about who made that watch vanish.Just before 10:30 a.m., a man wearing a blue shirt and sunglasses rings the doorbell with his knuckle. He then leaves and comes back with a backpack. That's when the motion-activated camera stops.In the next video, that man and another man are seen emerging from the home with backpacks, before getting into a vehicle, possibly a light-colored GMC Acadia SUV, and driving off. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s mayor has announced that the nation’s third-largest school district will not welcome students back to the classroom to start the school year, instead relying on remote instruction.Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Wednesday that the shift for Chicago Public Schools is based on a recent uptick in coronavirus cases.The district says it will implement remote learning through the first quarter and work with the Chicago Department of Public Health to determine if it is safe to open with a hybrid learning model in the second quarter, which begins on November 9.“As we build out this remote learning model and seek to establish a hybrid learning model in the second quarter, we will continue to support and collaborate with parents and school leaders to create safe, sustainable learning environments for our students,” said Lightfoot.The district last month unveiled a tentative hybrid plan for the fall semester, which begins Sept. 8. She wanted it to say "Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018." When she typed the message into the cake message option, the Publix website didn't' like the middle word in the phrase.The website put three hyphens in its place, so the finished cake read "Congrats Jacob! Summa --- Laude, class of 2018."Koscinski explained the meaning of the word in the special instructions box on the website and ordered the cake. She even pointed out that "the system is mistaking the word 'cum' for something inappropriate vs. Latin."Koscinski sent her husband to pick up the cake before the celebration, and when he returned from the store, the lines remained in place of "Cum." Koscinski shared her frustration on Facebook and said her son, Jacob, "was humiliated!!!" "Shame on Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70-year-old mother) about this joke of a cake."Koscinski called Publix and explained the situation to the assistant manager. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Fire crews responded Thursday to a fire on Camp Pendleton near the Hotel training area, North County Fire reported. The so-called Weisgarber Fire scorched at least 120 acres one mile west of the DeLuz Gate by Thursday night, Cal Fire said. Crews were able to get the fire 40 percent contained by around 7 p.m. By 10 p.m., base officials said that crews stopped the fire's forward rate of spread.North County Fire officials said the flames posed no threat to Fallbrook or the surrounding area. As of 6:45 a.m. Friday, Cal Fire officials said the fire was 100 percent contained and was stopped at 120 acres burned.There is no word on the cause of the fire. 695
