SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council unanimously voted, 9-0, Tuesday to invest more than million in homelessness services and programs designed to curb the city's homeless population.The .1 million allocation of state funding comes from the Homeless Emergency Aid Program, a 0 million block grant designed to help address homelessness throughout California. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and the mayors of the other so-called Big 11 cities secured a total of 0 million in state funding to address homelessness issues in the state's biggest cities.The city will allocate .8 million for homeless services like housing navigation, .2 million for rental assistance and subsidies, .6 million for the continuation of city services and facilities like San Diego's three bridge shelters and 5,000 each for youth programs and administration costs."Thanks to the advocacy by California's largest cities, we can now implement these critical programs to improve our outreach, expand the range and depth of homeless services including prevention and diversion strategies, and bring creative solutions online to move hundreds of homeless San Diegans off the streets and into housing," said District 3 City Councilman Chris Ward.The funds will be used to expand some existing programs while creating new ones, such as a flexible subsidy pool that offers housing assistance to residents who may not qualify for federal housing vouchers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season.The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season.The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10. David Hamilton, Boeing Company aerodynamicist and aerospace engineer Robert Liebeck and Robert Gilliland, the first man to fly the SR-71 Blackbird.The museum launched the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in 1963 to honor pilots, inventors, engineers, space explorers and more who have made important contributions in the fields of Earth and space flight. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. There were four motorcyclists killed in CHP jurisdiction, one without a helmet.The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways, and on all roads in unincorporated areas. 833

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. Students were required to think critically about the way public transit shapes our communities.''The contest comes from a partnership between MTS, Coca-Cola Refreshments of San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education.
