MOYOCK, N.C. – Three-year-old Vernon Smith is passionate about fire trucks and got a major surprise from dozens of first responders this weekend. Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department in North Carolina hosted a drive-by parade for the little boy who is about to have his third open heart surgery.Vernon’s dad, Blake Smith, wanted to put a smile on his son’s face, so he asked if the local fire truck could drive by. Word got around about Vernon’s story, and dozens of firefighters, police and others wanted to be part of the surprise.Other surrounding departments learned about the event and joined in: Moyock Volunteer Fire Department, the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department, the South Camden Volunteer Fire Department, Currituck County Fire-EMS, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department, the Camden County Sheriff’s Department, Pasquotank EMS, Lantz’s Towing, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol.One of the assistant chiefs for the Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department, Keith Storf, said the support they got from the neighboring departments was just phenomenal.Vernon’s mom, Brittany Blackwelder, said when she was 21 weeks pregnant, they learned that Vernon had a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. It is a rare disease that causes the left side of his heart to not work properly, which causes the right side to work double-time.Blackwelder said this will be his third reconstructive surgery, and said hopefully it will stabilize him. She said he can never play competitive sports and gets tired easily, but she said otherwise he should be able to live a normal life.Storf said the little boy has gone through more than most adults. More than 100 college newsrooms across the country plan to flood social media with editorials emphasizing the importance of student media on Wednesday, as well as calls for alumni donations.It's all part of a campaign called #SaveStudentNewsrooms -- an effort spearheaded by the editors at the Independent Florida Alligator, the student paper at the University of Florida. Editors there said they learned that Southern Methodist University's paper -- The Daily Campus -- would have to re-affiliate with the university due to lack of funding.Lack of funding is an issue that various student publications around the country have been facing, as it puts editorial independence in jeopardy."The whole idea behind the call to action day was to start a conversation about the state of student media in the US," said Melissa Gomez, the editor-in-chief of The Independent Florida Alligator. "Some people who may be removed from the university and or their publication may not realize that student newsrooms don't look like they did 20 years ago. Some of them have folded. Some of them are struggling to survive the next month. Others don't really have a secured future. And we want people to be aware of that."The Independent Florida Alligator is still separate from its university, but Gomez said it has faced other issues, such as a 7% pay cut across the board for its staff and other financial constraints.Gomez and her fellow editors plan to spend Wednesday pushing online content to raise awareness for #SaveStudentNewsrooms and highlighting the editorials of other student-run publications, she said. "We just believe in the accessibility of information being a platform where community members can watch these videos and formulate their own opinions accordingly."Along with posting an editorial, Díaz said The Daily Orange will be showing off its newsroom in a Facebook live video and sharing staff photos for Wednesday's event. MORGAN HILL, Calif. -- Authorities are investigating what exactly caused a plane to land on the freeway in the Bay Area Sunday morning, according to The Mercury News. (KGTV) — A police pursuit ended in a violent crash Wednesday, after a suspect hit two cars and injured a woman.National City Police said a car was stolen in Chula Vista overnight after the owner left it running. That car was found hours later by a National City school resource officer who detected it nearby on his lowjack system.The resource officer reported the stolen vehicle to police, leading to a brief pursuit with the suspect.The suspect made a sharp turn at Highland Ave. and 6th St., crashing into one car and sending that car into a second vehicle.A woman in the first vehicle that was hit was injured. She was taken to Sharp Chula Vista with unknown injuries.The crash ended right in front of a sign spinner working at the corner."All of a sudden I see they're chasing the car down this corner. He came this way, impacted that truck over there," the witness told 10News. "I was in shock the whole time. My jaw was dropped. I was scared, like, 'oh man I could've died."Police said the suspect was apprehended at the scene.
