ROCKFORD, Ill. -- As many police departments continue to struggle to reflect the diversity of the cities and municipalities, some are looking to a return to old school policing as a solution. One city grappling with violent crime is embedding officers in the thick of it. It’s a way to have a personal stake in policing their own neighborhood.Eighteen-year police force veteran Patrice Turner knows the streets of Rockford, Illinois, like the back of her hand.“This is my stomping grounds," said Turner. "I used to walk up and down this street. You know when I went to West Middle School here.”She grew up in Rockford, a town about 75 miles northwest of Chicago that has one of the highest crime rates in the country.“I drive through the lot and make sure it's OK. It’s actually been robbed a few times,” said Turner as she patrolled her route near a shopping center.For the last three years, she’s been part of a unique policing program working as a resident officer community keeper or ROCK.“They're actually living in that community,” explained Rockford’s assistant deputy chief, Mike Dalke. “They have a car squad car that they take home that's parked in front of their house and their job really is to build capacity, build trust within that community."Turner lives rent-free, embedded in the community. Her name and number are boldly displayed outside her house.“So yeah, there is there is little sense of anonymity, that's for sure,” said Turner.Police residency requirements fell out of favor in the early 20th century.According to government data, in 75 U.S. cities with the largest police forces, on average 60% of police officers live outside the city limits.Research suggests residency requirements don’t necessarily translate to public confidence in the police.Still, the ROCK program hopes personal interaction will build trust at a time when relations between police and communities of color across the nation are inflamed.Turner knows mending those relationships won’t come until the fractures of the past are dealt with.She says she’s trying to do that as an officer who has a vested stake in the community.“You form stronger bonds, you know people no longer see you as just a police officer. They see you as a human,” she said. “They see the officer as the person behind that uniform.”The department says it plans to hire a third ROCK officer soon and believes the model could work in other cities and municipalities. 2443

The move is hailed by reform advocates and criticized by counties that would assume responsibility for some of the state’s most violent criminal youth. The bill generally follows Gov. Gavin Newsom's latest plan to unravel the Division of Juvenile Justice, which houses about 750 youths. But legislators added what advocates said are needed safeguards and standards for the hundreds of millions of dollars that would eventually flow to counties to house and treat youths. RICHMOND, Va. -- Pinterest is one of the top social media platforms for swapping recipes and home ideas. It can also be another way to share information about your health."With its largely female user base, Pinterest represents an opportunity for spreading credible information and communicating about health, especially women's health issues such as breast cancer, breast cancer prevention, and screening," said Carrie A. Miller, Ph.D., M.P.H., a postdoctoral fellow at the Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine Massey Cancer Center and Department of Health Behavior and Policy.Miller led the Pinterest research study looking at how breast cancer information is communicated on the social media platform.VCU researchers analyzed a sample of 500 Pinterest posts which are referred to as pins. They were collected using Pinterest keywords such as breast cancer."We focused specifically on who posted the pin, the type of visual and textual information included in the pins as well as how users engaged with those pins. Whether those posts were repinned or saved or commented on," Miller said.The research found the posts were mostly text rather than posts of several pictures. Roughly 20 percent seem to come from everyday people."Individuals, Pinterest users just like you or me were posting. Often times, personal narratives, stories about breast cancer, their personal experience with the disease," Miller said.Dr. Miller says these posts can be used to empower the reader and encourage healthcare organizations to join the conversation.She also says if you have specific questions, always have a discussion with your doctor.Miller and her team are working on other social media studies. Retiring Michigan Congressman Paul Mitchell says he is leaving the Republican Party over efforts to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election.Mitchell revealed he would become an Independent in an interview with CNN. The Congressman who represents Michigan's thumb told the network he wrote to GOP leaders and notified them of his decision.He also requested that the Clerk of the House change his party affiliation. Grand Rapids area Congressman Justin Amash took similar actions in 2019, before becoming a Libertarian earlier this year. Amash did not run for reelection this year.Mitchell announced he would not run for reelection in July of 2019.
