WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been arrested in Winnipeg. Court records show Nygard, 79, was arrested under the Extradition Act and is set to appear in a Winnipeg courtroom this afternoon.According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Nygard faces a nine-count indictment in the United States on racketeering, sex trafficking, and related crimes.Manhattan federal prosecutors stated Nygard’s charges relate to a “decades-long pattern of criminal conduct involving at least dozens of victims in the United States, the Bahamas, and Canada, among other locations.”Earlier this year, U.S. federal authorities raided the Manhattan headquarters of the Canadian fashion mogul in February. This search came amid claims he trafficked and sexually assaulted dozens of teenage girls and women.The FBI searched the designer’s Times Square offices less than two weeks after 10 women filed a lawsuit accusing Nygard of enticing young and impoverished women to his estate in the Bahamas with cash and promises of modeling opportunities.According to prosecutors, from 1995 to 2020, Nygard used his international fashion brand to recruit and pay for sex with the victims, who were put on the payroll as “models” or “assistants.”Prosecutors said Nygard allegedly referred to the victims as his “girlfriends,” which required them to travel and stay with him at his palatial properties in California, the Bahamas, and Canada.According to the press release, Nygard allegedly hosted so-called “Pamper Parties,” named for their buffet, open bar, and spa treatments, to recruit more girls and young women.According to prosecutors, he allegedly would use a “girlfriend” or employee to scout out a chosen victim — who would then be forced into sexual activity and paid in cash.Prosecutors said Nygard also is accused of hosting sexual “swaps” with other friends and business associates, who would bring a “date” to trade for sex with one of his “girlfriends.”Nygard kept the “girlfriends” under constant surveillance, insisting they needed his permission to leave the properties, prosecutors said.According to the AP, several of Nygard’s victims claim they were 14 or 15 years old when the fashion mogul gave them alcohol or drugs and then raped them. 2300

Wildlife biologists with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida shared a shocking python find in Collier-Seminole State Forest on Thursday. An invasive Burmese python's eyes were a little bigger than its stomach when it decided to devour a white-tailed deer fawn. Officials say pythons have been known to kill and ingest large prey and this was a record breaking meal.  Officials stumbled upon the python with the massive prey inside. The biologists removed the python out of the wild into an open area and the python was stressed so it pushed the deer out of its mouth. In the photo below you can see the breathing tube and tongue of the python as it has its mouth wrapped around the deer. Biologists believe it is the largest python-to-prey ratio documented. The python was 31.5 pounds and the deer was 35 pounds; 111% of the python's mass. The findings will be published in the March 2018 issue of the Herpetological Review.“This observation is another important piece of evidence for the negative impact invasive Burmese pythons are having on native wildlife across the Greater Everglades Ecosystem” said Ian Bartoszek, Conservancy of Southwest Florida wildlife biologist. “Imagine the potential consequences to the state and federally protected Florida panther if Burmese pythons adversely affect the number of white-tailed deer, a panther’s primary prey.”Biologists are focused on the impact the python is having across the food chain. Since 2013, the Conservancy and its research partners have been conducting research to document the invasive Burmese python's biology and behavior in Collier County, including the tracking, removal and necropsy of captured pythons.Kelly Bazzle is the Digital Executive Producer at Scripps Station WFTS. While politicians debate unemployment benefits, those who rent housing are hoping a deal is worked out soon. Experts say, so far, the COVID-19 pandemic hasn't impacted the housing industry, but that could soon change.Property managers are concerned the housing industry could see a repeat of the Great Recession from 2008.Michael Cohen is the owner of Asset Realty Management in Tennessee, which manages close to 900 properties. He says when the pandemic first hit in March, they started to see a major decline in vacancies and payments coming in. But when unemployment benefits started to kick in, things returned to normal.Cohen is worried now that enhanced unemployment benefits for millions of Americans have ended."Some people are still trying to dig their way out of that hole where they couldn’t pay for March and now we’re three months later and they’ve made major attempts to get caught up and here we go again. Definitely, I'm concerned about it," says Cohen.Jack Strauss is the Miller Chair of Applied Economics at the University of Denver. He says to prevent another housing crisis, eviction moratoriums need to continue along with additional unemployment benefits.“We care about evictions, not just for the family which is a personal tragedy in moving, but it could destroy the neighborhoods,” Strauss said. “You can be evicted from your house, these rental properties will remain unrented for long periods of time."Strauss says there are only about 5 million job openings across the country right now and 18 million people are unemployed."We already have a health problem. We don't want another severe economic problem in terms of evictions, in terms of unemployment people going hungry and homeless," says Strauss."I just keep waiting for this tsunami of lack of rent payments and people not being able to vacate and not being able to fill our vacancies and them staying vacant. Then once we get into the holidays, then things slow down even more," says Cohen.Strauss believes Congress will eventually come to an agreement and reissue some form of enhanced unemployment benefits to people. He hopes this next coronavirus stimulus bill really focuses on those who are suffering, including people of color, who Strauss says rent properties significantly more and are more than twice as likely to face evictions."This will even further hurt the Black family unit and Lanoti family unit, as well, if we don't have a moratorium. We need to help people of color because they're more likely to be hurt by a lapse in federal aid," says Strauss. 2559
