BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- America's first full face transplant recipient, Dallas Wiens, made his first public appearance at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, according to media reports Tuesday.Sporting a goatee and dark sunglasses, Wiens, the 25-year-old Fort Worth, Texas, man, said Monday his new face feels natural just weeks after a 15-hour procedure that gave him a nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves. Wiens said he was able to smell again and breathe through his nose normally, adding his 4-year-old daughter told him when she saw him after the operation: "Daddy, you're so handsome."  Wiens lost all of his features and eyesight in November 2008 after hitting a power line while painting a church and underwent the transplant in March, 2011. The operation was paid for by the U.S. Department of Defense which gave the hospital a 3.4 million dollar research grant for five transplants.Surgeons said the transplant was not able to restore his sight, and some nerves were so badly damaged from his injury that he will probably have only partial sensation on his left cheek and the left side of his forehead."The most fun part is to see the next six to nine months when the function will start to come back and when Dallas will start to feel a light touch on his face," plastic surgeon Bohdan Pomahac said. UNITED NATIONS, April 1 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday called for greater public awareness of autism, in order to fight the stigma and discrimination facing those who suffer from the disorder.The statement came in a message to mark the annual World Autism Awareness Day, observed globally on April 2."Children and persons with autistic conditions face major challenges associated with stigma and discrimination, as well as a lack of access to support," said Ban."Far too many suffer terrible discrimination, abuse and isolation, in violation of their fundamental human rights," he added.Autism is a disorder that affects the brain's development of social and communication skills, and generally appears in the first three years of life."The number of children and people with autistic conditions continues to rise -- in every nation and in every racial, ethnic and social group," the secretary-general said.Ban said it is critical to support parents of children with the disorder and "create jobs for individuals with autism based on their skills and strengths, and improve public education to better meet the needs of students with autism."

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's railways transported about 77.34 million passengers during the fifteen days (Jan. 19 to Feb. 2) before the Spring Festival, the Ministry of Railways said.The figure was about 9.5 percent higher than the same period last year and set a new record, according to a report posted on the ministry's website.There were an average of 5.16 million passengers per day, up 448,000 from the same period last year. LOS ANGELES, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Law enforcement agencies are now using smart phones to track and arrest graffiti vandals in Los Angeles, a newspaper report said on Saturday.The graffiti-tracking program, spearheaded by the Tracking and Automated Graffiti Removal System, or TAGRS, allows graffiti- cleaning crews equipped with smart phones to photograph the markings and upload them to a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) database, the Los Angeles Times said.The photos are used to gather evidence for prosecution and restitution, the paper quoted city officials as saying.Once the graffiti suspects' identities are discovered, the information is added to the TAGRS database and may eventually uncover incidents involving the same suspects, the paper said.The LAPD launched a pilot project in 2009 in Van Nuys near Los Angeles, modeling its version on one run by the Orange County Sheriff's Department, according to the report.The program is now anchored at four LAPD stations, Van Nuys, Hollenbeck, Central and Harbor, said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's spokeswoman Casey Hernandez.Los Angeles spends about 10 million dollars a year cleaning up graffiti, Hernandez said.
