BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao put the country's economic tasks on top of next year's agenda in a New Year address broadcast Friday.In his address to domestic and overseas audience via state TV and radio broadcasters, Hu said to accelerate the transformation of economic development pattern will be a consistent thread of China's work in 2011, the first year of the country's 12th Five-Year Program.China will adopt a "proactive" fiscal policy and "prudent" monetary policy, speed up economic restructuring, improve people's livelihood and push forward reform and opening-up, he said in the speech titled "Jointly Improve the Welfare of People from All Countries," broadcast by the China Radio International, China National Radio and China Central Television.The country will stick to the guidelines of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong", "Macao people governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy to maintain long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao, he said."We will adhere to the principles of 'peaceful reunification' and 'one country, two systems,' firlmly hold on to the theme of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, continue to advance exchanges and cooperation, and ceaselessly work for the benefit of the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait," he said.Chinese President Hu Jintao delivers a New Year address titled "Jointly Improve the Welfare of People from All Countries" which is broadcasted to domestic and overseas audiences via state TV and radio broadcasters, in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 31, 2010. In 2010, in face of complicated domestic and international situations, Chinese people successfully hosted the Shanghai World Expo and the Asian Games in Guangzhou while bravely fighting against deadly natural disasters including the earthquake in Qinghai Province and the landslide in Gansu Province, he said.China fulfilled the targets set by the 11th Five-Year Program (2006-2010) and increased its economic and comprehensive strength, Hu said.The country was also actively engaged and played a constructive part in international cooperation to cope with global financial crisis, climate change and nuclear issues, he said."On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I would like to extend sincere acknowledgement to governments and people who offered great help to us this year," Hu said.WORKING TOGETHER WITH OTHER COUNTRIESThe world currently is witnessing multipolarization and globalization while science and technological development is on the edge of breakthrough, Hu said.But the global economy is still moving on a long and winding path towards recovery and issues like climate change, energy, food security and public health security become more serious, Hu said."International and regional hot issues have cropped up one after another, while peace and development of the world are facing unprecedented opportunities and challenges."China will hold high the flag of peace, development and cooperation, adhere to the independent foreign policy, maintain world peace and promote common development, Hu said.The country will stick to the principle of mutual benefits when opening up itself, he said.China will develop friendly cooperation with all other countries on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence and continue to actively participate in international cooperation on global issues, Hu said."(We) will continue to work with the people of all countries to jointly promote the building of a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity," said Hu.He also extended sympathy to people who have been suffering from war, poverty, diseases and natural calamities and promised that China will do all it can to help them as it has done before."I believe, as long as the people from all countries make efforts hand in hand, the world will have a better future and the welfare of the people from all countries will be improved," Hu said.An article by Hu on implementing the guiding principles of the Fifth Plenum of the 17th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee will be published in Qiu Shi (Seeking Truth), an official magazine of the CPC Central Committee, on Jan. 1.

CHENGDU, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)-- The reconstruction of the Erwang Temple, which was damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, is expected to finish on Nov. 18 in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local heritage protection authorities on Friday.Sitting in the Yulei Mountains in Dujiangyan City, Erwang Temple was built over 2,000 years ago to commemorate Li Bing and his son, the two engineers who built the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which was listed as a World Heritage site in 2000.The temple will soon be partially open for visitors and the final touches are being added to the water supply, drainage system and lavatories in these areas, said Fan Tuoyu, deputy chief of the Dujiangyan Cultural Relics Administration.The entire temple will be opened after the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 3, 2011, said Fan.The reconstruction project kicked off in June, 2008 with an investment of 126 million yuan (19 million U.S. dollars) from the central budget.The temple was seriously damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake with almost all the ancient buildings having collapsed.

NANJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday started to extend a memorial wall to engrave more names of those massacred by Japanese aggressors more than 70 years ago in Nanjing.After extension, the "wailing wall", a part of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, will have 10,324 names on it, curator Zhu Chengshan said.The wall was engraved with 3,000 names when it was first built in 1995, and the list was expanded to more than 8,600 names in 2007 when the memorial reopened after a major repair and extension to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre.The original wall was 43 meters long and 3.5 meters high. The extension will lengthen the wall by 26.5 meters, with 1,655 more names added to it, according to Zhu.Nanjing Massacre happened during World War II after Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then capital of China, on Dec. 13, 1937. More than 300,000 Chinese were killed in the month-long atrocity.To collect the names of the victims is an important but tough job in the research of the massacre, as it is hard to seek witnesses and related documents decades after the holocaust, said Zhu.

  

XI'AN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- A 100-member team of Chinese soldiers left here Friday for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for an eight-month UN peace-keeping operation there. They formed the first batch of China's 12th peace-keeping team to DRC since 2003. They will be joined by a second batch of 118 soldiers who are scheduled to depart on Nov. 28.The 12th team comprises military engineers and medical staff. United Nations (UN) peacekeepers of China attend a farewell ceremony in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Nov. 19, 2010. Part of the 12th group of Chinese UN peacekeeprs for The Democratic Republic of Congo, including 80 engineers and 20 medicals, set off on their 8-month-long UN peacekeeping mission on Friday.China's 11th peace-keeping team to DRC, made up of 220 soldiers in total, left Lanzhou, capital of northwestern Gansu province in March.

  

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's latest visit to Pakistan will further enhance the all-weather strategic relationship between the two countries, Pakistani media said Sunday.Pakistan's media gave extensive coverage to Wen's visit. They made special reports highlighting various aspects of the China-Pakistan friendship and the assistance of both countries extended to each other in disaster management.The strategic partnership will be advanced as a package of agreements were signed during Wen's three-day visit, the official news agency Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported."Chinese support for the youth mobilization, reconstruction plan for flood affected people and strengthening of economic ties are laudable steps which will directly benefit the people of Pakistan," Pakistani federal minister for women development Firdous Ashiq Awan told APP.Wen's visit has opened a new chapter in bilateral ties, she added.China extended full support to Pakistan's sovereignty, security and political integrity besides extending strong support in economic cooperation, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir was quoted as saying by local newspaper Daily Times.Pakistan and China signed a series of agreements to cement the pragmatic economic and trade cooperation, which will take the bilateral political trust and understanding to a new high, DAWN newspaper reported.Tariq Puri, chief executive of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, told DAWN that there was great scope for consolidating trade between the two countries, adding the current business summit would definitely pave the way for its increasing.The visit of Chinese premier to Pakistan will bolster confidence in facing current challenges, international affairs experts told local media.The visit would send a reassuring signal to Pakistan, which is surrounded by a host of problems, challenges and difficulties. Over the decades, China has been a trusted and reliable friend of Pakistan and has been always ready to help it when in need, Riffat Hussain, head of the department of Defense and Strategic Studies of the Quaid-e-Azam University was quoted as saying by APP.Premier Wen left Islamabad for home on Sunday after rounding off the three-day visit to Pakistan.
