SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego's Lamont Smith resigned from his position as head men's basketball coach, the school announced in a news release late Wednesday night. "This situation has been difficult for all concerned, and our prayers continue to remain with everyone," the school said in the release.  Last month, Smith was arrested in the Bay Area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego students had mixed feelings regarding their university's involvement in a national scandal. The complaint states Robert Flaxman paid 0,000 to get his son in the "side door" "through [the USD varsity coach] and [USD varsity sport]".Most students said they didn't know his son, an Industrial Systems Engineer Major. They did have opinions on the act itself.Former soccer athlete Lexi Phillips, who is a Sophomore, said it was like a slap in the face, "colleges, when you're applying, definitely ask if you're an athlete or not because they recognize how much work it is and so people who haven't been doing that and saying 'oh well I've been doing that' just to get into an elite school definitely isn't fair and isn't fair for someone who's been trying even harder to get in and they take their spot."Other students like Missica Derhalli, who is a Freshman, say it makes them sick, "I really can't believe that we would be doing something like that. I picked this college particularly because I felt like it was a good, holistic place for me to be and I was going to be getting a truly good education.""Just knowing that there are people who aren't putting in effort and I spent 13 years of my education just working so hard and these people aren't working at all and it's just it's very disheartening," Missica added. She volunteered more than 1,000 hours helping special needs children and has a merit scholarship.On the other side of the spectrum, some students weren't surprised at all. "This is basically like a smaller version of my high school and I saw this stuff like this happening there so this is all somewhat normal for me as bad as that sounds," Sophomore Jacob Asher said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new interactive facility is teaching students the importance of water in our environment. Doors to the "Hydro Station" opened Thursday morning in Chula Vista.School leaders say this is a new way to get kids excited about learning about jobs in the water industry. The Hydro Station will host learning exhibits and hands-on activities to introduce students to the ecological cycle of water, water conservation, water quality, and more. "Human beings need water," says Matt Tessier with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. "We need water to survive. That's one of the things that kids really understand."Four thousand five hundred kids will get the chance to experience the Hydro Station annually. Its located at the Sweetwater Authority's Groundwater Desalination Facility. The Hydro Station is made possible through a partnership between the Sweetwater Authority, Chula Vista Elementary School District and Otay Mesa Water District. There will be an official ribbon-cutting for the learning space this evening at 5 p.m. 1070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When it comes to wrong-way crashes in San Diego County, 2018 is off to an unfortunate start.There have been numerous wrong-way vehicle crashes around the county nearly eight weeks into the new year, and authorities have not been able to pinpoint what exactly is causing an uptick in these types of crashes.According to Caltrans data, from 1995-2012, an average of 23 people died each year in wrong-way crashes on California roadways.San Diego had 13 wrong-way fatalities recorded in 2015 -- the last year Caltrans data was compiled for wrong-way crashes.In 2017, Caltrans launched a two-year pilot program in San Diego and Sacramento that focuses on ways to not only prevent wrong-way crashes but to also alert authorities in the event a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction.As part of the test program, Caltrans has deployed reflective pavement markings on off-ramps and signs with flashing lights that turn on if a wrong-way vehicle is detected.Caltrans has not yet provided data collected from the program to determine the protective measures' effectiveness.Here's a look at wrong-way crashes on San Diego County roadways in the past 12 months.Feb. 20, 2018: Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after wrong-way crash-- A driver was hospitalized -- and also arrested -- after police said he was driving in the wrong direction on Fairmount Ave. when he hit another vehicle.
