(KGTV) - Burglars left behind a trail of destruction at two locations, which included an apparent attempt to delay a Poway family's return home.Just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, doorbell video shows Diana's family pulling out of their driveway in Poway, bound for a jujitsu class in Kearny Mesa. After that class, they discovered one of the tires on their van flattened. The culprit: the metal valve on that tire had been sliced. They got their van towed to a mechanic and received an Uber ride to their home off Pomerardo Road, arriving just before 7:15 p.m."The first thing we noticed was our doorbell was on the ground," said Diana.Her Ring doorbell had been yanked out. Inside the home was darkness."Our power was cut. It was pitch black. My kids were terrified," said Diana.Her kids, ages 8 and 10, remained outside while her husband, Jay, went inside with a phone light."I thought someone took a sledgehammer to the house, or a hammer, or a bat," said Jay.The trail of destruction up his staircase was caused by none of those things. Instead, the damage was made by their 400 lb. safe, shoved out of their bedroom by the intruders."What they likely did was roll it on its side and shove it down the steps," said Diana.Inside the safe were two iPads, two watch winders and a gold-and-diamond Rolex watch that Jay had spent years saving for.Turns out the burglars had gone to the side of the house, opened up the electrical box and cut the power, before drilling open a keyhole in the patio door. But another action is perhaps the most disturbing part of the crime. In the video, moments after they leave, you can hear an engine start. A van appears to follow their van. President Donald Trump provided an update to the White House’s response to the coronavirus pandemic at a news conference on Wednesday.While coronavirus deaths are on the rise, cases appear to be leveling off. On Tuesday, there were 1,399 coronavirus-related deaths reported, according to Johns Hopkins University figures.While the positivity rate has dropped off slightly in recent days (from 8.6% to 8.3%), some public health experts are baffled by a drop in testing. Data indicates that fewer Americans are being tested for the virus. Part of the reason could be due to delays in getting results.Johns Hopkins University data indicates that 28 states saw a decline in testing. Among the states seeing declines in testing are Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and Arkansas, which are seeing higher positivity rates compared to the rest of the US. Only eight states have ramped up testing, according to the data.Despite the drop in testing, the White House has said that the US has “created the best COVID-19 testing system in the world.”“The United States also has far and away the most robust testing capacity in the world,” Trump said on Tuesday. “Testing has been incredible, what we’ve been able to do. Nobody is even close. Since March 12th, we’ve increased daily testing by 32,000 percent. How’s that?”While public health experts suggest that more tests would lead to a lower positivity rate, America’s positivity rate remains much higher than a number of developed nations, including Canada, Spain, Germany and Italy. The US positivity rate remains lower than a handful of countries, including, Mexico, India and Iran. Data from another hard-hit nation, Brazil, is not widely available.Ashish K. (KGTV) - A Poway family is stocking up on resources in case a quarantine is triggered by the coronavirus.As the father, Nate took his love of engineering home to support the family, "we have a big family, and food is expensive, so we’ve always tried to be self reliant."Self reliant means gardens, poultry and fish. They have five kids. Right next to the back deck is a garden at about hip level. “We have kale, we have thyme and parsley. My cilantro grows pretty well here, we have salad greens.” Nate listed off. That particular garden is watered by a fish tank full of a dozen or so Tilapia.Fruit trees dot the backyard. Everything from apricot, apples and nectarines, to cherries, guavas and mulberries grow here.In the opposite side of the yard is a chicken coop. "We have 11 chickens, we get eggs every day. About 7," his wife, Lacy said happily. She said they planned to only grow one more garden this summer but in the last week four more have been constructed and prepared for seeding.In a shed next to the new garden beds, is a stockpile. Under a wood workbench sit brown metal tubs with 'Department of Defense Drinking Water' labels. Nate looked down at his clipboard and read off more supplies, “we have wheat for sprouting. We have about 100lbs. of brown sugar and honey."In the last month they've ramped up gathering supplies."This week we basically went and bought a lot of stuff that we would normally buy in the next few months, but we bought it now in case we can’t go in the next few months." Nate said he is watching national news and concerned a quarantine could come to San Diego.“We just have to take care of each other. There might not be food on the shelves, there might be kids staying home all day from school. We don’t know.” He said.Now they're looking at their backyard in a different way. “We’ve got the pool for washing if we needed it... So this is the drinking water should we need it, we have two generators.”Even their kids are aware and prepared to help. “I got it in case the coronavirus comes here," Shelby, 7, said showing us her medical kit.The family hopes they don't ever have to use their stockpile but are prepared just in case. 2197
