BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.

MOSCOW, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Donald Tsang Yan-Kuen voiced their support here on Tuesday for the development of more direct links between Russia and Hong Kong.Tsang arrived in Moscow by the first ever direct commercial flight run by a Hong Kong airline.Tsang noted that after the lifting of visa restrictions in July 2009, two-way travels between Russia and Hong Kong rose by 100 percent."I am certain this flow will be increasing further," he was quoted as saying by local news agencies."The updating of the relevant listing rules in June this year would facilitate the listing of (Russian) mining and resource companies in Hong Kong," said Tsang.He also encouraged Russian companies to issue RMB bonds in Hong Kong, and welcomed Russian banks to set up branches in Hong Kong and make use of the RMB clearing and settlement system.Tsang was accompanied by 30 Hong Kong businessmen who were interested in cooperation with Russia."I hope that your meeting here in Moscow, including with members of the business community, will be useful," said Medvedev.The Russian president also invited Tsang to discuss the further advancement of bilateral cooperation as well as some key international issues.

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China is launching its sixth national population census Monday, ten years after the last one, as the world's most populous nation seeks a clearer and up-to-date picture of its population.From Nov. 1 to Nov. 10, more than six million census takers are to go door to door and visit over 400 million households across the country, recording family information and finishing the first stage of the census.In order to have more accurate figures, from Nov. 11 to Nov. 30, another round of census-taking will be launched, though on the smaller scale of 1/10000 of the population, officials with the country's National Bureau of Statistics said.Statistics will be calculated in December, with the key data scheduled to be released by the end of April 2011, sources said.In the last census, China's population stood at 1.29533 billion.

LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful.
