SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Ohio man accused of pepper-spraying 11 San Diego Police officers during a demonstration last month has pleaded not guilty.Denzel Draughn, 28, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony counts of unlawful use of tear gas against a peace officer and 11 felony counts of use of force against a peace officer.On Aug. 28, a group of demonstrators protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc., marched through downtown San Diego.See Sky10 video of the demonstration below:Police say that as the group neared 9th and E Streets, a vehicle that was following the group failed to stop at red lights. After police stopped the driver, a crowd began to form near the car and officers who pulled the vehicle over.SDPD says that the group ignored demands to back up from the scene, prompting one officer to pull out pepper spray. Police say one person tried to knock the pepper spray out of the officer's hand, forcing the officer to discharge the spray.Several police officers then tried to arrest the person. As the officers were placing the person in custody, a pepper spray canister fell on the ground. Officers say Draughn picked up the canister and sprayed it twice, hitting 11 officers.SDPD says Draughn fled but was later found and arrested.If convicted, Draughn faces probation to 11 years in jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is on a mission to help minority mothers through their pregnancy.When Nikki Helms isn't hosting community dinner or volunteering her time to help Haitian immigrants navigate racism in America, she's walking families through the miracle of childbirth. Helms found her calling in 2014. "I had heard about these different women who had had these experiences where these women had asked for help and they weren't paid attention to," Helms said about how the hospital could be a dangerous place for minority moms.She was faced with a decision: "You could go to either nursing school or to midwifery school and I felt that midwifery school was a way that I could really make an appreciable difference right away."Helms said only four out of 75 San Diego County midwives are Black."I joke about it now that I am 25% of the black midwives in San Diego County," she said with a chuckle.The small segment is making a huge difference, providing culture-sensitive care during pregnancy.A friend told Helms to start a GoFundMe to raise money for a birth center. Helms said she started the page in January and at first it started out slow.Then friends contacted social media influencers and Helms said it was a huge snowball effect from there.She broke 0,000 this week and is elated by the support. "They hear my truth and they believe in my dream and they believe in me and that's just amazing," Helms said tearing up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After months without any organized sports or youth activities, the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program resumed Monday under strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.For Addison Watson, it was a day she thought would never come. On Monday, she joined hundreds of other kids to take part in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program.“I’ve been sitting in my room on a desk with my computer, staring at a screen. This is nice to be outside,” Addison said.When the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, there was a concern there wouldn’t be a program this summer.However, organizers pressed on and prepared just in case. Once the green light was given by San Diego County health officials, they had everything up and running.The program opened up with health measures in place, including having families do health screenings at home. Additionally, each participant and the entire staff will have to go through another health and temperature screening on site each day.Participants and staff are also required to wear masks and will have to follow social distancing guidelines. To help with distancing, the program will be spread out at more locations.The participants will also be broken up into smaller groups -- unlike before, they will stay within this group to keep the interaction to fewer people.Heather Rabe, program manager for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program, said, “We're following an operational safety protocol plan that we've been developing and working on and adjusting as new guidelines have come out for the last two months.”10News was also told other agencies within the state and outside of California will use this similar model when it comes to their aquatic programs. 1735

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A small brush fire in University City led to train delays between Sorrento Valley and Old Town Thursday, according to the North County Transit District. The first-alarm vegetation fire broke about just before 2 p.m. in a riverbed off Porte De Merano north of SR-52, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The brush burned into heavy fuel, officials said, before being stamped out.“Please expect delays on COASTER service,” NCTD posted on Twitter.
