President Donald Trump addressed the graduating class at the U.S. Military Academy against a backdrop of urgent questions about the role of soldiers in a civil society. Trump’s commencement speech on Saturday to the 1,100 graduating cadets during a global pandemic was delivered as arguments continue to rage over his threat to use American troops on domestic soil to quell protests stemming from the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. Tensions between the White House and the military have escalated since protests over Floyd's death swept the nation. 582

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - A state inspection found 12 flaws in Poway's drinking water delivery system less than three months before the city's precautionary boil water advisory.City officials remain adamant that the issues raised by the inspection had nothing to do with the nearly week-long advisory that ended Dec. 6. The September 2019 inspection, from the State Water Resources Control Board, raised a series of issues - some administrative. It says some of Poway's distribution system reservoirs haven't been cleaned or inspected in more than five years; that the city's coagulant feed pump meter isn't working, and that the city needs to update its water quality alarm systems for chlorine and clarity. RELATED: Poway businesses affected by boil water advisory get help from San Diego County"The following is a summary of our findings and a discussion of deficiencies observed during the inspection, which must be addressed to better protect public health and improve system reliability," says the inspection, dated Sept. 19. The city issued the precautionary boil advisory on Nov. 30 after a Thanksgiving rain storm. A storm drain overflowed and backed up into its water treatment facility's clearwell reservoir due to Thanksgiving rains. Residents began reporting brownish water. The city temporarily fixed the problem, but state officials have said they anticipate issuing fines. RELATED: Mayor: Water Crisis critics are politically motivatedPoway officials expressed shock at that revelation, citing the September report. The city has declined to release the report, but 10News obtained it from the state via a Public Records Act request. The city declined a request for an interview, but a spokeswoman said it has met the deadlines the inspection gave to address the issues it raised. 1802

President Donald Trump is "somewhat embarrassed" by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, White House chief of staff John Kelly says.In an interview on NPR's "Morning Edition" that was released late Thursday, Kelly was asked whether the special counsel's probe leaves a cloud hanging over the White House."It may not be a cloud, but certainly the President is somewhat embarrassed, frankly," Kelly said.Kelly also seemed to suggest that the Russia investigation affects Trump's relationship with other world leaders."When world leaders come in -- you know Bibi Netanyahu who was here and who's under investigation himself -- and it's like you walk in and you know the first couple of minutes of every conversation might revolve around that kind of thing," Kelly said, using the nickname for the Israeli Prime Minister who is under investigation in two separate criminal probes. When asked if he shares the President's opinion that the Mueller probe is a "witch hunt," Kelly said, "Something that has gone on this long without any real meat on the bone, it suggests to me that there is nothing there, relative to our President."A retired four-star Marine general, Kelly took over as Trump's chief of staff for Reince Priebus last July, hoping to bring order to a chaotic White House. But he has seen his influence diminish in recent months as Trump has started to bypass Kelly."In retrospect, I wish I had been here from day one," Kelly told NPR. "I think in some cases, in terms of staffing or serving the President, that first six months was pretty chaotic and there were people some people hired that maybe shouldn't have hired some people." 1703

President Donald Trump and the first lady will be spending Thanksgiving at the White House instead of attending the annual dinner at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. The first lady’s spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, confirmed the plans in a “Holiday Scheduling Update” on Twitter on Tuesday evening.Trump and his family typically spend the holiday in Palm Beach and have Thanksgiving dinner in a ballroom alongside dues-paying members who purchase tickets to attend.A spokesperson for the Trump Organization did not respond to questions Tuesday about whether the Mar-a-Lago event would be held given the spike in coronavirus cases and pleas from public health officials for Americans to limit the number of people they socialize with indoors this holiday season to limit the spread.Meanwhile, Joe Biden said Monday that he and his wife are planning to follow the advice of medical officials who recommend no more than 10 people at a gathering, masked and socially distanced. Biden also says anyone at their Thanksgiving gathering would be tested for the virus 24 hours before getting together. The restrictions may be difficult, but Biden says, “I just want to make sure we’re able to be together next Thanksgiving, next Christmas."The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging people to celebrate virtually or with members of their household, noting that in-person gatherings with people from different households “pose varying levels of risk.” Guidance also notes that a gathering’s size “should be determined based on the ability of attendees from different households” to socially distance and follow hygiene recommendations. 1645

President Donald Trump on Thursday blamed the news media for the angry political climate as a serial bomber continues to send suspicious packages to Democrat politicians and news organizations."A very big part of the Anger we see today in our society is caused by the purposely false and inaccurate reporting of the Mainstream Media that I refer to as Fake News. It has gotten so bad and hateful that it is beyond description. Mainstream Media must clean up its act, FAST!" Trump tweeted.Trump's comments come a day after CNN's New York offices were evacuated after a suspicious package addressed to former CIA Director John Brennan was discovered in the building's mailroom.Trump made similar comments at a political rally in Wisconsin on Wednesday, saying the  "the media also has a responsibility to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility."Trump took a more muted tone on Wednesday afternoon prior to his rally, hours after packages containing explosive devices had been intercepted before they were delivered to his political rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama."In these times, we have to unify, we have to come together, send a message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the United States of America," Trump said.Just last week, at a political rally in Montana, Trump recalled fondly that Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-Montana) once assaulted a reporter, saying that "any guy that can do a body slam, he's my kind of guy."  1508
