SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) -- While many sports have made their return during the COVID-19 pandemic, bowling alleys have remained closed.The Mira Mesa Lanes have been a very important part of the Mira Mesa community for years. The bowling alley off Mira Mesa Boulevard has been known for their special needs and senior leagues, and as a spot for youth bowlers to enjoy the game with family and friends.Those who love the Lanes hope it has not seen its last strike."They have probably the biggest, or the second biggest, youth program in the state. We also have a couple of national champions that bowl there," said Marci Greim, who has started a "Save Mira Mesa Lanes" GoFundMe page.Greim, a mother of two young bowlers, said Mira Mesa Lanes has always been a big advocate of college."The kids, just by participating in leagues, have a portion of their dues set aside for college scholarship money. Then, when the kids do well in tournaments, or other things like that, they are earning college scholarship money. Mira Mesa Lanes has just always welcomed the youth bowlers,” said Greim.Mira Mesa Lanes shut down on March 16 due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. They reopened for a few weeks in June, but state restrictions forced them to shut down once again.The alley has been closed ever since."So, they are really on the brink," said Greim. "They are already behind on their rent and it's looking pretty bleak."The GoFundMe page was organized to help Mira Mesa Lanes pay their rent while the alley sits in limbo amid the pandemic.“It’s to help them survive long enough to not be closed permanently,” said Greim. 1625

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Residents in a South San Diego Apartment complex worked together to fight a fire that started in the patio.At around 10:45 Sunday morning, San Diego City Fire Rescue teams responded to the 1700 block of Oro Vista Road. Heavy smoke was billowing from the patio of a downstairs apartment. "I called 911 automatically, and that's when the person who lives upstairs came running out,” Alexa Delgado said.Delgado had just arrived at the Oro Vista Villas to visit her mother when she saw the flames. "It started popping, and the fire started coming out,” she said. It was in that moment of chaos that she found herself and several neighbors step up to help. One neighbor pulled the smoke alarm, others smashed fire extinguisher boxes and started spraying down the patio, and she protected the neighbor's pet birds, all before the fire department arrived. Engine 30’s Fire Captain, John Wilson said what the residents did in the first minutes of the fire helped suppress the flames. "There was an alarm that was going off upon our arrival, so the smoke detectors did their jobs and got everyone out safely,” Captain Wilson said. Delgado says what happened today was a true testament to the word “community.”“A bunch of neighbors helping and asking if anyone living there, went upstairs to see if anyone was in there and helping out."Fire investigators are still looking into what exactly caused the patio fire.  No one was inside the home when the flames ignited. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) People across California will soon be able to use an app to notify or find out if they have been exposed to COVID-19.The CA Notify system was launched on the campus of UC San Diego in September. Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the tool would be available on Google and Apple devices statewide beginning on December 10th.Dr. Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer for UC San Diego Health, says the tool helps stop the spread of the virus on campus."While San Diego case rates have surged from 3 to 6 percent, our campus has fortunately remained a safer place with our students and employees testing positive at less than 1 percent," said Dr. Longhurst.Philip Tajanko is a freshman at UCSD. He signed up for the app shortly after arriving on campus in September."I figured that I might as well download the app just in case," said Tajanko.Tajanko tested positive for the virus in October."Outside of the people I directly informed by giving them a phone call or text, it did give me some peace of mind knowing that I could just send out this blanket alert that would notify anyone that I had been in contact with but don't have their phone number," said Tajanko.The system uses smartphone technology when a users' phone is within close proximity to another user for an extended period."You're not going to get an exposure unless your phone is within 6 feet of someone else's device for greater than 15 minutes cumulatively," said Dr. Longhurst.The governor stressed the app is opt-in, 100% private, secure, and does not track location.It has been effective. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Scattered showers sprinkled all across San Diego County Saturday, bringing with it up to a quarter inch of rain. While rain totals were not significant, it was the reason for hundreds of car accidents.At 11:40 AM, 10News found a passenger van flipped onto its side. The driver said he was turning onto the Home on-ramp on WB 94 when he hydroplaned and flipped over. With some help from good Samaritans, he was able to climb up out of the passenger side door. He was not hurt. There were no passengers. One of many solo spin-outs happened on the 163 S to the 8 E on-ramp. The driver said at around 12:30 PM, he lost control of his truck at the top of the loop, then smashed into the concrete barrier. He said he felt lucky he did not roll down into a 50-foot embankment like another car did just a few hours prior in the same spot.RELATED: Check today's San Diego forecast10News crews also saw countless fender benders and flatbed tow trucks roaming the highways. Mother nature also wreaked havoc onto herself. At around 2:30 PM, a tree toppled onto Northbound 805 near Plaza South.Branches partially blocked the slow lane until clean up crews arrived.By afternoon, the rain clouds started to concentrate over North County. A three-car crash happened along Westbound 78 near the Nordahl Rd on-ramp in San Marcos. The small red vehicle ended up mangled, and the Prius somehow climbed up an embankment. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Diego-based rancher says their business has grown as the corporate meat industry struggles.In the past months, Doug Lindamood, of SonRise Ranch, says they've seen their ranch experience a surge in business.“Surprisingly, in an odd set of circumstances, we’ve had a ranch that’s been very successful during these times,” he said. He said their business has easily tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. They’ve seen more people seeking food safety, so they’re buying meat in bulk. The ranch typically sells about 10-12 half or full cows a year, but that’s recently increased to 10-12 a week. This boost comes as the industrial meat industry is hurting across the country. Lindamood said a handful of companies produce a majority of the meat in the U.S. and the big players have been hit with sick employees, causing closures and less supply. “Highly consolidated plants being affected by basically a pandemic which then has the potential to shut down a vast portion of our production,” he said. Lindamood adds this has been a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed. “For every one of those small plants that shut down over the last 20 or 30 years, we lost a small piece of our soul with respect to connecting to our consumers,” Lindamood said. “We need not one or 10 of me — which there are maybe five or six of us in the Southern California region. We need 50 or 60 or 200 of us.” 1433
