BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will face the challenge of an aging population over the coming five years and the city has limited experience in dealing with the phenomenon, the Beijing Morning Post reported Saturday.At the end of 2009, registered senior citizens in Beijing numbered 2.27 million, or 18.2 percent of the city's total population of permanent residents, the report said, citing the local government.The city will have a moderately aged society when its aged population reaches 3.24 million in 2015, the report said.Of the city's population of registered senior citizens, 1.94 million, or 85.6 percent, are below the age of 80 years, and 326,000, or 14.4 percent, are above the age of 80 years.In the coming five years, approximately 470,000 senior citizens in Beijing will require nursing.A survey conducted recently by the society and legal system committee of the municipal political consultative conference found that of 4,000-plus respondents, 24.5 percent intended to live in homes for the aged, a level much higher than the 4-percent level the municipal government expected.Some 53.3 percent of respondents said they are willing to spend their twilight years at home. That figure was significantly lower than the 90 percent figure the local government had expected.According to the survey, 99 percent of local citizens born after 1980 said they would not be able to look after their parents during their old age.

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday urged Israel and Palestine to stay on the path of peace talks and take constructive moves to advance their stalled peace talks.Wen made the appeal in a message to the Conference in Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was held Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.Offering warm congratulations for the event on behalf of the Chinese government, Wen stressed that the Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue.The Chinese government has all along firmly supported the Palestinian people's just cause of restoring their legitimate national rights, and the efforts to continuously push the Middle East peace process forward, Wen said.The talks between Israel and Palestine have now reached a pivotal stage, he said, voicing the hope that both sides will stay on the track,take positive and constructive efforts, avoid any disturbance of the talks, cooperate with international mediation efforts, and constantly promote the negotiation process.He expressed the hope that on the basis of related UN resolutions and the "land-for-peace" principle, an independent Palestinian State with full sovereignty will be established and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and the Palestinian State will be achieved.An early settlement of the Palestinian issue is the expectation shared by all Middle East countries and peoples and the international community, Wen said.As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will as always support the United Nations in playing a vital role on the Middle East issue, he said.He added that China, along with the international community, will continue to make unremitting efforts to seek a just solution to the Palestinian issue and promote peace, stability and development in the Middle East.The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977 designating Nov. 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. GUIYANG, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and 34 others injured in an explosion that ripped through an Internet cafe in southwest China's Guizhou Province Saturday night, according to local police.The explosion occurred at around 10:30 p.m. in an Internet cafe in the downtown area of the Kaili City of Miao-Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Qiandongnan, said Guizhou's provincial public security department.Victims have been pulled out of the debris and the injured rushed to hospitals, said the department.Rescue workers at the scene said the powerful blast had turned the cafe into "complete ruins" and also destroyed windows of nearby residential buildings.The police are investigating the cause of the explosion and search and rescue work is still underway.
